I rebuilt a 2.3 years ago that looked like that. I had to have it bored .040 over to get it cleaned up. It ran while it looked like that too. Any bug in the vicinity of the car didnt stand a chance though.

    Indeed!!

The gent whose engine made this pic, noticed that his car (engine?) was running like crap after a few track sessions (it was also overheating). So he pulled the spark plugs and noticed that #4 had some of the ceramic cone damaged and parts of it were missing. He replaces the plugs and continues to track more. Same thing happens again - broken spark plug ceramic cone. Replaced plugs again and tracked a couple more sessions.

After scoping the engine later, he decides that the spark plugs came apart and damaged his piston! In reality it was exactly the other way around -the piston fractured due to excessive, continuous detonation and the piston parts flew around inside the chambers, damaging piston tops and spark plugs. Also note how literally melted the edges of the piston are where the pieces are missing from. I have tried to explain to folks that spark plugs don't just normally break - something has to hit them or there is SEVERE detonation.

I've also seen pics of spark plug gaps completely closed and folks think that happened purely from detonation. I tell them to go look for the missing pieces of their piston to be hammered into the head somewhere. I've never seen detonation close a plug gap - only some impact with loose parts in the chamber.

There are still a few of us old died in the wool Mac relics hanging around. Imagine this, a few of us even drive old boosted Ford relics.
I have several hundred MAC computers/users at the office. A few hundred Win users and about 3000 assorted *NIX boxes, some with users. We're working on rolling all of them into using Active Directory authentication / login.

    The joys!

Ordered one! Looks to be handy to look around in all of the nook and crannies of an engine compartment. I was standing on my head trying to read a part number on the bottom of an EGR valve so this may help.

    Thanks for the lead.

Note the melted parts of the tips and the thermal/mechanical cracks in what's left. The appearance of FOD damage is from the balde tips coming off as they melted and impacted the following high-speed blades..

Are you saying melting is the intital cause of damage? Looks more like FUP damage.

Got my scope today and it's cool. Pictures aren't as exciting as yours, yet, but found it can get into real tight spaces where a camera can't. The only drawback is if you are in a tight area and need to see something at 90 degrees, the camera body is a bit long. Certainly can't complain for the price.

Thanks for the lead, I'm sure it will come in handy more than once!
