Hello, attached is a picture of a line that I could use a positive ID on.

In the dead center of that photo is a tube that the previous owner figured was unimportant, and so crimped it shut with a hose clamp. It comes from the block, and not the oil cooling loop. I believe that the coolant line from the back of the lower intake will not plug into this, and instead plug into a small tee on the coolant lines going into the oil cooling loop.
This car is almost together, with the rest of the parts on the way. Many thanks for your help.

That's the coolant return line that runs through your oil cooler. I wouldn't clamp that off.

It might be cooling, and the oil cooling lines are pictured in the photo, but the question is over something that is definitely not oil cooling if that helps. Its the crimped over line next to the oil cooling lines that I'm curious about.
In the manual, it shows that a oil separator is sometimes plugged into that spot on the block.
The engine is from an 85 SVO, where should that line go?

Need better picture of what you'e asking about. There *should* be a large breather coming out of the block between the opil cooler mount and the distributor that should have a vent hose, ~1", on it that points forward, between the dist cap and the block. That forms one part of the Type 4 PCV vent system
I will post some pics of that area (on a clean example) later today.

Thanks. With all of this help I can positively identify that the item in question is for the PCV system.
So I think I can rebuild the PCV system well enough with your excellent pictures, the EVTM, and emissions diagrams I found. The only question remaining is where I can get that oil separator that fits directly to the block, or what I can use instead?
As I understand it an oil separator is just a way for the oil to sort of splash out and rest rather than be pushed by the velocity of the air through a small circumference tube. But I bet, and respect, that the engineering behind it is probably more nuanced then that.
Sorry for the late reply, I've had a busy family week (50th wedding anniversary, baptism) that I was hosting out of town visitors for, and this coming week is birthdays and wedding we are traveling for.

Those block PCV breathers are common to all 2.3L OHC engines form Ford. And they're long obsolete. So you'll have to locate one that someone else no longer loves. It's just a metal can with large wire steel mesh in it. Clean the new one real good (to remove all internal rust, crud, dirt and spiders) then put some fresh paint on the outside.
Yes, it merely adds some distance and surface area for the oil vapors to condense on and drain back into the crankcase.
So you celebrated your 50th and got baptized at the same time?

How do you clean the inside of them? You can pour lots of kerosene then isopropanol (rubbing alcohol 91%) through them until it comes out clean. Alternately you can take them apart - unbend the crimps on the sides - and dip the wire mesh into something and hand clean the housings. Then re-seal and re-crimp. lastly scuff and paint.

Mike, the fitting in the lower intake manifold for coolant flow, is that standard for 84? On my cars the fan switch and the fitting are reversed. I also see that you used sealant tape on the switch. If I remember from the assembly manual they are supposed to be installed dry.

No, & yes.
Those fittings are not what came on the 84 - that's a later 86 square intake (actually I installed that before the 1986 models were released to production, but that's another story). I just searched the brass fittings box decades ago when I made the manifold swap. It would be better to have the switch and coolant outlet reversed so the coolant flows across the switch. I think I did it like that for a clearance issue in that area for a super-secret experiment I was doing, but I've slept since then so my memory isn't that fresh. In any case there is electrical conductivity between the switch body and the manifold casting (yes, I check those things). And it doesn't leak. Pipe threads almost always end up with some metal-to-metal contact when tightened properly.
And Tony - I must comment on your observation skills. You're *supposed* to notice the fingerprint-free engine assembly and the red timing marks on the flywheel. And the nice, lightweight aluminum cylinder head. Those sorts of things. And not trivial things like parts being in the wrong holes.
