View Full Version : Turbo to valve cover air vent line doesn't fit

Hello everyone. Still in the last stages of getting this together and restoring all the functions the previous owner felt were superfluous.
I purchased the metal line that goes from the round oil separator on the back end of the valve cover to the turbo inlet. However, the fitting on the line is just a size bigger than the fitting on the turbo inlet.

Now, it looks like it might work if I fitted it directly to the turbo rather than the vacuum tee.
The steel pipe was advertized from an 84, I know my engine is 85.5 or 86.
Please advise, if this is a matter of finding an 85 pipe or removing the vacuum tee.

Need a better picture of the actual fitting in the elbo on the turbo. My best guess is that the line is wrong. The angle in the line appears too sharp to me.

Where did you purchase the line from?
We have managed to create duplicate Oil feed lines which will be available in the near future & I'm certain we can make the oil seperator line. I would suggest you contact that vendor & have them replace it. The line should not have such a sharp bend in it right there. See the pic below of the stock line. Since that pic I also added a section of fuel line on the IC bracket to prevent it from rubbing on the line.

Do you have the proper fitting in the turbo inlet elbow? I can post pics later tonight (if I remember).
A note: That exhaust gasket will live for about 3 hours. Take it out. As long as the surfaces are reasonably flat, it is not needed.

Yes, the line is incompatible with that elbow. The angle is wrong and the fitting is too large on the pipe.
Either it or the elbow (tee) has to go for it to work. I'm debating whether it is easier to get another line or do without that extra vacuum line.

I purchased it off e-bay, it was billed as coming from an 84 SVO.

How big of a rush are you in to get this together? As I mentioned we can have that added to the batch of oil feed lines when they are produced.
If you are in a rush, check with Classic Tube (I can't confirm if there's is correct) & see if they will send you a pic of what they sell. They claim to carry that line though they post no pics. If it is correct post some pics & let us know.

BTW - that tube on the SVO turbo uses a 3/8" tube with associated tube nut (5/8" hex is standard) and standard SAE double flare.

LOOKS like you have the fitting in your photo BUT......
Rotate it so the T for the vacuum hose is pointing to the front of the car. Then the tube should thread into the fitting.

After reviewing the pic several more times, I think Mark is right on the clocking of the brass fitting. It was hard to tell since the fitting is really dirty in that pic. But it does still look like the bend is too sharp in the line from the pic that was posted.

Soooo.... I'm back on the project after the 50th wedding anniversary, baptism, and wedding.
I can see that I need a new fitting (for the egr and vacuum tube) to fit into the turbo housing. The old one might at one point have been the right one, but its been altered to the point it won't work anymore.
Where would I get one? It seems people are rebuilding turbos all the time around here, is there a place to source the fittings from?

I vent mine to a canister and plugged the hole on the turbo inlet flange.

Anyone know what a machine shop catalog orderer would call the kind of flared tube that comes out the other side of this fitting for the vacuum work? A hose barb is the closest name I can find for it, and it might work, but I'm not a hydrolic engineer.
Yes, my phone calls came up dry. The shop owners who had the part wouldn't sell it separate from the turbo, which is sad because I've seen quite a few forum posts where people just discard these things or plug up one end.
Anyone who has deleted the EGR tube on their turbo (perhaps just have a bolt sticking out of the fitting), perhaps this fitting works with just the vacuum line if you are interested in a straight swap. I'm happy to fund the experiment just in case it works and that frees up the fitting I need.

You could get one of the usual (available) "45 degree inverted flare-to-male pipe" fittings, in brass, and drill a hole on the opposite side flat of the hex and add your own tube hose fitting. It's not a pressurized area so just having a slip fit hose is fine. Get some copper tube in the appropriate size from a hobby shop. Mount the part in a small vice, drill using the appropriate sized drill bit to have an almost press fit, cut the tube to ~3/4" and press/solder it in place.
Some hardware stores will also have small diameter copper tubing. You can also use a steel fitting but it's a little more work to drill and solder.

I made my own.
1 inverted flare fitting.
1 hose barb.
Drill press and proper sized drill bit. (~.200-210 drill bit as I recall)
Silver solder after installing the barb in the inverted flare fitting.
