We came into possession, around 5 years ago, a 1979 Mustang Ghia. The car has a 2.8l V6 engine with the Ghia trim interior (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&catId=6000&item=170867248704) package. It's also a console delete car. It was originally a Grey with red interior but previous owners had started to restore the car. The car is now blue, with a not very good paint job, with medium blue interior. Our plan is to keep the blue interior since the seats are brand new and look very nice, and paint the car blue again with black trim. Most of the rubber side moldings are in too bad of repair to try and save so we may just paint the trim black.

We have all new weather-stripping for the car and some extra parts that will be put on after the paint job.

The crappy aftermarket wheels and tires have been taken off for a set of 1987-88 Gt turbine wheels (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&catId=6000&item=330779968365), and even snagged a 5th for a full size spare.

Looks like this project will start to really get off the ground here in the next few weeks so stay tuned for more to come.

I have been collecting parts for a while now, from a new complete front bumper cover all the way to a factory AM/FM/Cass deck and two sets of tail lamps, plus much much more.

When we took delivery of the car:

Now to add an Eibach Pro Spring kit (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_x_22904594-P_x_x), 8.8 w/3.73's, an intercooled turbo 2.3 @ 18psi, w/a4ld, fresh paint, weather stripping, emblems, a little interior freshening up, 255/50/15 on the Turbine wheels and Texas Classic Vanity License Plates

Well this has been just one crazy week, I won't go into it but Junior and I did make a tiny bit of progrees on this, so let's roll out:

So anyone who has tried to hand sand an engine compartment knows it damn near impossible to get to every nook and crevas, so looks like we're goona make a big mess and make sure it get it all nice and clean to lay down some primer and paint:

As mentioned in a previous post, that while hanging out at the hospital, I was able to escape and go pick up all the paint and supplies:
http://www.explorerforum.com/photopost/data/3540/P5260061.JPG

And here is the color I decided on to paint the car 1985 Mclaren Blue http://www.westsidemustangs.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I had already started making areas of cosmetic damage that need to be addressed to get it all smooth:

Jumior and I took the 7.5" rear axle (http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=rear+axle) with 3.08 gears out and stuff an 8.8" rear axle with 3.73's in it after we converted the hydralic lines from the 7.5 to the 8.8, cause the rear soft line connection was on the other side of the under body, we also stuffed Eibach Pro drop (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&catId=6000&item=250866086245) springs in it too:

The time to completion, is obviously based on several things, finances (I'm self employed and the wife is a state worker) we have a lot of personal overhead, the weather is another one, although it's getting better, I can't paint till it stays warm and the humidity drops some more, and being able to get a few other projects moved out of the way too.
(couple of them are not seen in the picture below)

http://www.explorerforum.com/photopost/data/3555/P7220060.JPG

Plus I have to make sure I keep my HOA outta my hair while I'm doing all of this.

So I guess it should hopefully get another strong move forward here in the next week or two, I fit it in around all the other stuff I have to take care of.

But believe me I'll keep snapping pictures and I'll keep you up on the progress as it happens.

OMG! Talk about a mess to clean up
http://www.explorerforum.com/photopost/data/3839/P7260044.JPG

It's the 90lbs hopper from Tractor Supply, and same with the oxide media, about $7.00 a 50lbs bag.

Well.......... a holiday or two, and a run here and there, most of it will be covered by something, and I haven't painted in 20 years, so I don't feel so bad.

And yes the steering shaft and the upper strut mounts will get re-shot the correct colors.

Had to do some reconnaissance at the salvage yard for a customer doing a Fox five lug swap, so while I was there I took my cordless sawzall and snatched the two transmission crossmember mounts (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&catId=6000&item=170854469846) I needed to further along this conversion.

$2 to get in, $10 for the mounts, and now all I have to do is remove them from the piece of floor pan they are attached to:

What hood you planning to use?

I have three directions I am contemplating, in order in which I'm leaning towards:

1) a liquid to air intercooler and keep the stock unsuspecting sleeper look:

http://www.cxracing.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/AWIC14-1-b.jpg

2) I have a couple of 82' GT hood scoops laying around:

http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/4/714/4669/39284834019_large.jpg

3) I have a damaged SVO hood, and I have a Turbo Coupe hood, I could graft the scoop/s from and weld it in:

Other than the added complexity, weight and maintenance, the LTA is the way to go for the lowest temps.

After dealing with the Shelby GT/SC's, GT500, and Terlingua's the complexity of the LTA set-up is minimal, and there isn't that much added weight.
Not to be contradictory, but if I'm worried about that little amount of weight then the whole project on a whole is going in the wrong direction, and we're not building a Bob Holmes or John Bell Blair car here.

The cool thing is there is really no rush on this, but yes, I would rather lean towards liquid to air at this point.

I'm glad you'll be able to keep watching the progress of this project over here, as I have been limiting myself as the idiot forums I deal with.

YES, you are correct that is/was/is my car in the LRS catalog:

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/40772_150090861676642_3081127_n.jpg

And yes those are the LRS spring in it, I will tell you they are a lot nicer than most straight rate springs, and they do really, really handle well, you will need to up grade the dampners to handle the up-rate in spring lbs.

The reason I say the car is/was/is my car, as you well know I molested this story by leaving out that this Ghia was for one of out kiddo's, well as you can tell we never got it done in time, sooooo I gave him my 85' LX 5.0 5spd you see picture in the catalog, off he went to college, happy as a lark not believing I gave him my favorite car, and a month after being at school, an inattentive driver ran a red light:

We are very lucky he is ok, and he was only shaken up by the whole ordeal, he was more scared about having to call me and let me know that his pride and joy was now totaled.

I reassured him I was more worried about him than the car, told him to cover it, and that one day I'll send a transport to AZ to pick it up and bring it back to Texas.

As you notice in the pictures, I did take the ROH ZS's off the car and put the factory 10holes on it for fear they would get stolen or something.
And funny that I was thinking about putting the ROH's on the Ghia today if it would stop raining for a little bit.

The engine, A4LD trans, wiring, and PCM (LB3) are from an 1988 Turbo Coupe, the IHI turbo is rebuilt/new, the engine has 88k miles on it, new belts, spark plugs, cap rotor, oil/filter, and $100 worth of cooling lines, and the trans was rebuilt and updated has about 2500 miles on it.

This is the 88' Turbo Coupe I drove for a while that the drivetrain came out of:

Mike I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir with you, but those that haven't been building engines, or have only built a few, it is important that you have everything clean, clean, clean, a little bit of stiction will change the torque/stretch settings on what ever you are fastening, even if it's not a race engine, or not, this is still important, just like NOT painting aluminum heads, or using a heat dispersing paint on the block .

Here the ole Marti Report on the Ghia for those of you whom may have wondered what one looks like:

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s720x720/253525_10152119057775529_2998702_n.jpg

And I had another idea about going a different direction with a 32v DOHC Mark VIII drivetrain with a couple of turbos, but I figured I'll do a 7th generation F Series Short Wide project for that.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/223075_10152119056700529_1374315023_n.jpg

Even though it would have been fun to do it, I'd already stuffed a boosted 32v in a Flopbody chassis already.

I have had the car for 5 years, but I have only been working on it for the past year, my heart attack kinda side lined it and put me a quite a bit behind on some of the Shelby projects, and the SVO project too, which I haven't started a thread on yet. :/

This was earlier in this year, the 67', an 85' LX 4 cylinder car, the 79' Ghia, an 86' SVO, and the 85' GT

Ok so you DO understand Mike was asking me about what I was going to do with the Blue Mustang Ghia, right?

Cause on the SVOC fackbook page that was for the black 86' SVO that I did a week or so ago:

Blue Ghia here on the left........................................................ Black SVO here on the right :)

And then the air line sprung a friggin leak and ended my adventures to get the door/trunk jambs primed, along with around the windows.

So after I put in a few hours at the machine shop tomorrow, I'll stop by Lowe's Performance Outlet and grab some pieces to repair the damaged/leaking line and get it repaired, and see if we can't get back on track.

Ah Bob I figured you might be the first one, since that would be a threatening factor if you ever went AI/X in the central region, as Mike Stacy has a heavy hitting Shelby Terlingua:

http://shelbyautos.com/terlingua.asp

The one pictured in the link above is the same one you see in my side yard, that was Kieth's at SAI, and the latemode 2009 media car Gary Patterson drove on the track.

There are only 38 of these built, and I have a few of them under my care, the 4.0 SOHC engines are not forged, and we all know what happens when we add boost, they start at 9psi, and I take them to 15lbs plus, but not with out a special recipe I have concocted stroking them out to 4.7 liters:

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/229034_216988361653558_5724037_n.jpg

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/226334_216988774986850_6228733_n.jpg

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/268533_243127145706346_3751035_n.jpg

The come out with a safe 425wrhp 428tq power rating, and they don't break ring lands any more.

The Terlingua's was as close to the SVO in a latemodel chassis, mild boosted horsepower and torque, fantastic handling, and ginormous brakes, limited number in builds and just an absolute blast to drive, and they come with their own set of bad quirks!

What are you using for blasting media? Are you just roughing up the surfaces? It looks like there's still paint on the chassis in the last few pics.

Black Oxide, some of the pics were as I was blasting, the wife was taking most of those, this isn't actually a full restoration, I initally was trying to get the car sold, figured the floor pan were why it wasn't selling to I installed them, still no bits, so I didn't want to install all the new weather stripping without painting the jambs, and then go back pull it all off and do it twice, so I figured I wold jam it and then put all the new weather stripping on.
I didn't do the suspension, be cause, again it was going to be one of our kiddo's car (one pictured earlier helping) but I gave him the white catalog/magazine car that got totaled, still with this being said the wife said I cold keep this car as a driver if I wanted, sooooo I would rather drive it than make it all stupid pretty and have to worry about driving it in the rain, or getting it dirty driving over people and small animals.

Although I/we have an affinity for the Terlingua's I also do quite a lot of Shelby/GT's, Ford GT's and of course the GT500's............

OK, well to try and shove this back on topic after "That Guy" completely train wrecked it just cause a few car have meatballs :p

So after a reatardedly (is that a word?) crazy Monday I swung by your and mine favorite Performance Outlet and picked up some fittings and pipe to repair the rupture I had Sunday night wrecking the time available and allotted to shoot the jamb on this car, a day behind I get home (some 15 miles from town) and realize I have the wrong schedule pipe and after dealing with a few customer calls and some internets stuffs, I head back into town to get the right pipe, and go upstairs (the attic) and proceed to fix the offending breakage, SO!

If all goes somewhat well and the coffee is in alinement with the Bean Gods, I should be able to shoot this damn things and get back to playing catch up, WHICH, I hope I can do.

I'm a garage car painter myself. Would you mind giving us a run down on paint brand, single or two stage (looks like single...?), gun brand and tip size, etc. Any issues with the paint used etc. Method and technique...do you paint "hot" in order to get a quick flash to keep the bugs and dust to a minimum, or paint thick in order to allow your cut and buff to clean the crap off? Maybe I'm asking too many questions :)

Thanks.

Ok Bob, on the paint it's actually two stage, I just did think everyone needed a picture of the cup of clear, although I thought about it as I set it down next to my glass of water on the work bench and thought......... Hmmmmmm that would be funny and taste like shit all at the same time, nah I'll pass :)

The paint and stabilizer is Valspar.

The primer, reducer, clear, and activator is all Advantage.

So it's all a low to medium budget material, I believe with filters, sticks, a few dust masks (not my respirator), sand paper, a quart of body mud/activator and a few other things I paid like $500

On equipment, oh this is where Pat will probably ban me on this, so keep him outta here and don't let him hear about this part...................... Horrible Freight, yup that's right, this chinzy bastard went to HF and bought the $99 paint shaker (best thing I ever bought) not only does it shake my auto paint, but he it was awesome for the interior and soon coming up exterior paints :)
The gun was HF's highest end cup gun with a 1.7 tip, looks like a Binks or Develbiss, kinda works like one, it's not bad for $25 or so bucks, I started out using my Craftsman spot gun (small cup gun) but it started spitteling (yes that's a word :P) so it got the axe, I will purchase the HF HVLP for the full paint job later.

I'm also using the HF water separators/regulators (small orange ones) just for the shaker and the guns, they have fitting on both sides to plug and un-plug from the system when I'm not painting, more from HF would be rolls of tape, more paint filters, rolls of paper and clear drop cloth.

As for this project there are a few areas that I'm just fudging, this isn't a show car, and if worst case I wind up driving it (most likely 90%) then it going to see a BUNCH of miles, so it will get pretty beat up on the hwy............Primer, even though it's a 1:1, I laid on about 5 coats in those areas, because it was all down to bare metal that a lot of the trim will cover it, but I wanted to make sure is was well coated/protected and it gave a little wiggle room to block it out. Sprayed Heavy

Base coat, 3 coats, mixed at a 1:1 ratio, Sprayed Med/little wet against MFG recommendations.

Clear I mixed up two cups worth at a ratio of 1:4:1 started out the first two coats light to med, to see how it was laying down, then stepped up to wet/heavy to get the finish I was looking for, and yes it does allow me to go back and do a heavy cut on the clear in case something needs to be fixed, luckily right now it's on of two natural problems, the first during the day is wind, I just had to be closer to the subject for shooting, and very my air up, and volume down a bit, but if I would have shot at night without the wind, the bugs wold have killed me, I'll shoot with the wind.

There was about 5-10min between each coat, and about 20min or so between each stage for gun cleaning and mixing, this allowed for it to flash.

Tried to stay the same distance off the subject, paying attention to how the paint was laying down, you know that look if you have painted before.

And yes the bottom of the doors did get painted, my knees are loving me today for it.

And I also went and painted the trunk (Mike probably would have said something, *snicker*) and the outer portions of the inner fenders and frame rails.

I'll let it sit open in the sun today while I work on one of the Terlingua's and at the end of the day I'll put the door to body weather strip on it, if I have a chance in the next day or two I'll finish it up by installing the new run channel, and outer belting/dew wipes to totally seal off the inside, allowing me to then add carpet, but not till after I switch out the HVAC box and the pedal assy.

Here again, for everyone, the outer edges your seeing on the body will get sanded back down for the final paint job, this was just to get in the areas/jambs that you would want to do fist, MAINLY........ since I replace the floor pans, and there was no door to body weather stripping, I didn't want to put all that on, then take it ALL off again, to paint, just to put it back on again, shit that a lot of work :/

Ok, well if I missed something please feel free to ask :)

No, no, no, I'm just a normal guy, well wait, I was dropped on my head once :P

Seriously let this be a testament, that even you can do the same thing I can with a little patience, research, and the main thing parts gathering, and having a "PLAN" you gotta have a plan, go back to page one and watch how this all starts off, and note things in the background of hording parts, also note, I'm using ALL factory parts, all stuff you can get off other Mudstains, or out in salvage yards, there is no real magic here.

There is a little bit of equipment, that most of you probably don't have, and that's normal, this does make my job easier BUT it comes at a price, AND I also do this for a living, so even though you think it's cool, I have stood in front of that media cabinet for more hours than I'd like to remember, some of the stuff around here has names, most I probably shouldn't share here cause Pat might learn a new word to put in the word filter.

Another thing after thirty years of this, I'd rather be out gardening/working in the yard.

Look, like I told my students when I taught automotive, if you really want this we'll give you the tools, yo just have to take them from us, be patient, research, and ask questions, that's what this forum is for, get the quality of the work first, the speed will come later ;)

Doing the window seal is a roaring pain in the azz. Last one I did, I laid the seal out in the sun for awhile, and then made a tool to help press it deeply into the groove.

I can say this, after driving around for two years with an old busted up seal, I kicked myself for not installing a new one sooner. Its well worth the effort.

Well there isn't much else happening around here, I could do like the facebook people and post pics of every single plate of food I eat, but Pat would probably ban me for it not being a 2.3 turbo related meal, unless of course I add bacon to it, then that trumps the whole 2.3 turbo rule thing, and I only have bacon on cheer leaders and there isn't a NFS section on this board so..........................

Yeah,...... that's why you get pictures of my Flopbody Mustaing 2.3 Turbo project.

I could stop, all you have to do is ask, or you could send Pat in here with the Ban Hammer :P

1. I have the ban hammer now. Pat's busy. You know how it is.

2. Actually there is a NSFW/NWS section. It's just not public. One has to ask to have access - so they don't accidentally get there while searching for red SVO pictures.

3. Carry on.

I'm not worried about those, they're getting replaced, and they area actually fine, they just never got cleaned.

I'll be acquiring an AFCO heat exchanger this next week when I return from out of town.

I would prefer the larger TVS heat exchanger pictured, but it won't fit behind the bumper cover like I want it to, so I'm settling for the AFCO, which will still be more than enough for removing the heat..................

Then in the trunk, right up against the back seat on the floor I'll mount this 4 gallon tank, I may actually move the battery right next to it, that has bee unforeseen at this point:

I actually had soaked the harness in a 5 gallon bucket of diluted Purple Power.

Hand scrubbed it, and then let it soak a little longer while I pressure washed the T-5, then came back and pressure washed the harness and hung it from the chain to let it dry out.

The harness had oily goo on quite a bit of it, which meant I was gonna get dirty and electrical tape wouldn't stick so I just cleaned her up a bit.

I also put together a pedal assy to stick in the car for the T-5.

Mine's fairly clean. I just took it from an '87 TC. It's a lot cleaner than the original, hacked-up '84 harness. I've been cleaning it with Simple Green and a rag while combing through and labeling all the wires. The TC had anti-lock brakes, and I don't have any accessories other than an alternator, so and my goal of a wire-tuck means A LOT a simplifying and splicing. Sometimes I just stare at it, asking myself "What made you think you could figure out an electrical harness?!"

SVOC

The only reason that is labeled is because my apprentice is not familiar with the wiring set-up as I will put him on projects and cut him loose.

I will never look past a ’79 ghia again… The fact that you are putting such effort into this car after owning and working on the ‘bad ass’ Shelby’s Terlingua’s, SVO’s, and Cobras just goes to show that one with your skill and talent can make even a little ’79 Ghia a bit of a ‘bad ass’ car too, thanks for broadening my view and for sharing your project.

Thanks Pat that means a lot to hear that, I'm sorry if this has taken a while to get back on this project, but i have ran into a huge financial slump, and sold most of my Fox collection sans this 79' Ghia and an 86' SVO, I even have to seel my truck so I could buy and RV to move to take a job some 3 1/2 hours from where I live.

Fear not, it could be worse, at least I live at a race track, and work for a group building and maintaining Boss 302R and 302S, with a handful of Miata's so it's not to terribly bad.

Funny at this point there are few different directions to go to get back on this project, I'm figuring to start on the bottom and go from there..............

Ok now to add in a little back history on the Ghia, we had a salvage title 1986 GT that had a "broken back" that we had found and drug it back here dismantled it and it was nice enough to give the Ghia it's complete front suspension, 8.8 rear axle with 3.73's.

The rest of the GT front clip, bumpers, bumper shocks, rear bumper cover, and body side moulding went to the 86' SVO "Daily Beater" , and then was cut up and hauled off, some of the other stuff was stuck in the attic.

This time I'll start about 5am in the morning when it's a lot cooler and get done by 8am or before.

Also time to clean up this pig sty, starting to look like Bob's place :p

I know you all are smart, but I'll still add the note in here that the diff cover is getting swapped out for a stamped aluminum one from and Exploder, the pinion flange will get cleaned up, when I remove it to replace the pinion seals, as you notice it leaks on the floor.
And the drums will go in the media cabinet and then get painted a dark cast color.

Picture that weren't taken were of a bucket cut down filled with Purple Power and water, scrub brush and hand towel to clean the bottom side of the car, I was too wet and annoyed to bother with pics, before hand though, was a hand towel and air blower with a scraper to get the heavy stuff first.

Between all the cleaning, painting and the sand blaster, I changed clothes 3 different times yesterday, and I still made mud puddle in the shower.

For the out door blasting, since I wasn't going to recover/reuse and of the media I drove to a local supply house/Tack store and bough three 50lbs bags of play sand for $4 a bag. and used that in my up right hopper.

I have glass media in the cabinet.

And as for the neighbors? I have been here 10 years, I have watched 98% of all the people move in and out, I watched all the houses go in (the ones you see in the pictures), I have been doing this since I moved here, a few of them actually love to watch what goes on as they drive by, the others? Who the F**K cares, they can get bent in the same pants they got happy in.

Same place, 8 years ago, and with some green grass, cause it used to rain back then

Funny you point that out Mike, as I look and see that the only place grass is growing is under the RV were it doesn't get burned, and next to the driveway where the cars get wash.

So this morning I drug out the push mower and the lawn tractor and sharpened the blades, cleaned the bottom of the deck, so I can mow tomorrow, cause you know the yard looks like a 1970's Play Boy Playmate

Well I got a little more done today, on the Ghia, not much as the heat index was just a little more than I really wanted to deal with.

I've never done a trackday in a car, several on bikes. They get better every time and I learn something new as well.
I may have to take the svo out to one once its back on the road and running well. I'm sure it's even pricier in a car as
tires and fuel get expensive very quickly. Have a safe weekend and update the thread when you can, it's one of my
favorites.

2.0" DOM??

1.75" OD x 1.56" ID DOM exceeds WRL requirements for cages

The cage will emulate the ones I built for the cars below, since we'll be in the same race series together.

*edit

This was a 3 hour Enduro we did last Sunday with the Beta Test car (Grey - Tim driving) and the second built car (#55 - Me driving), I placed 3rd over all and Tim finished 5th over all, I lapped Tim and was going to lap him again till I bobbled on fuel and had to drive around in 5th gear for the last 10min, Tim ran out of fuel pulling down pit road at the end of the race.

Thank you for the kind words, since the project has taken bit of a turn, the fine details of restoration will more than likely be shot to the way side, hence the door panels, are decaying and chunking out, rather then spend hours finding good used ones, I scuffed and sanded then to get most of the flaky stuff off and then dyed them, they don't look too bad, but you can see they are still a little rough where the sun beat down on them.

I am not familiar with cages. Where does this set-up put you for driving position?

The door bars are tiered from top to bottom to give seat and driver clearance, so the arm rest and window crank were removed, there was a notch made in the door panel to clear the vertical rear bar on the horizontal door bars.

The passenger side still can use the window crank and arm rest (ISO 1979 passenger arm rest) but I need to run down and get some metal to adapt the seat to the tracks, after I do that I'll get you some detail pics of seat placement to door bar, and seat placement to steering wheel.

The FIA seat will still be adjustable, but per rules I have to use a lockable seat back support for safety reasons.

The passenger seat is not FIA and will not have a lockable seat back support as there will be no passengers during racing, I could however duplicate the driver seat set-up and door bars and it would clear tech for a passenger to ride along, but at a 100hp cap that would be a disadvantage, easier to give rides to people after the races, and for HPDE's and fun track days.

In short I like an up close and comfortable driving position that is relaxed and easy to reach everything, which keeps you in control ;)

If you watched the in-car vid I posted, you will notice the 2nd car I build if very easy and relaxed to drive, doing three hour enduros, are cake.

I did slack yesterday, I actually have 99% of the interior done, including the steering wheel and QR set-up, the height of the steering wheel can be adjusted by shims on the pedal assy

Thank you for the kind words, and yes when you pop into Houston, swing by, if your lucky (the right day) we'll head out to the track.

*EDIT* The red steering wheel, Hmmm yeah, I'm kinda torn on that one, I was thinking about putting it in my media cabinet and blasting the spokes, and doing a brushed aluminum look (like the factory), or a matte black finish, leaning more towards the brushed aluminum, although I could match it with a red harness, but I think a set of black harness' are on their way though.
You noticed the QR (Quick Release) is black.

As for the E-brake cover, the car originally came with that and the shifter bezel as it was a no console car, BUT in my Salvage Yard travels I have been trying to scoop more of them up, I believe I may have an extra of each, but I would need to dig around and check, the only thing I know I do not have is the metal bracket that secures the shifter bezel to the floor pan/trans tunnel.

UPDATE, on the seat install, I will have to order the Corbeau double locking seat track for two reasons....... 1) the seats move, the factory single locks aren't effective, 2) the seats sit too high both in general and in the back where it mounts.

I will also have to shim the steering colum down about a 1/2" to get the seating to steering wheel/pedal position where I'm comfortable with it, no real big deal, just that I wasted all that time fabbing brackets to mount the seats to the factory seat tracks, OH WELL. (That's also why they weren't painted in the photos, I kind of had my suspicions.

So since the list of things to do is still quite long, I will carry on with other things till I can get the new seat tracks in.

Although, the paint shop is supposed to call and have me pick up cars 1 and 2 that we dropped off last Saturday, which means I will have to run into Austin and trailer them back, there is several hours lost driving in holiday traffic, but at least I can erase them from my "To Do" list for the most part other than install the lights, paint and install the window trim, and rear wing on one of the cars.

It also kills me I have to show pictures of the heinous door panels, I do have my feelers out there for some respectable replacements along with a passenger arm rest, till then I'll just grit my teeth.
As if any of you were wondering, the wood inserts on the door panels are actually "peel and stick" simulated wood floor laminate I got for a $1.98 a strip from Lowes that I cut with a razor knife and trimmed up with scissors :P

Hope you all had a great New Years Celebration!

If you have any questions, or want other pictures, let me know I'd be glad to do it.

Thank you for the kind words, and yes when you pop into Houston, swing by, if your lucky (the right day) we'll head out to the track.

I would LOVE for that to be case! I will keep you posted!

The red steering wheel, Hmmm yeah, I'm kinda torn on that one...

I get it, but it just stands out as interesting to me. I like the focal point.

Well, if you ever decide you don't need extras, I'd make a good home for them and make them feel comfortable with some homemade brackets! ;-)

Thanks again for your inspiration! Good luck with your continuation and the new year!

I say carry over the wood grain look to the steering wheel. You can have someone hydro dip it to look like wood grain. While you are at it, the helmet should get hydro dipped with a wood grain pattern. You could have thrown people for a loop by using a wood grain pattern on the roll cage to make it appear as though that S-box had a wooden roll cage.

WOW and I thought I was over the top about the wood grain look, Mitch has taken it a few levels TOO far in this case.

Maybe it's wood envy? Mitch are you envious of my wood???!!!

So as it has been with this car, it's been 1 step forward and three steps back, being a 79' has had it's ups and downs with compatibility to later Fox chassis and then again like here, parts availability.

While I had the steering column in the car, and the Q/R set-up installed, as I removed the crappy steering shaft to replace the rag joint, I noticed some up and down, plus side to side play, well wouldn't you know it the bottom bearing was bad, and that is something that is just not available........... so, on to the interwebz to check my local Wrench-A-Part and low and behold they just happen to have gotten in a little 1980 Mustang coupe in 2.3 4spd flavor.
So we halt everything and load up my bag of tools and wander in towards Austin to see if I can possibly find a steering column in this little car.
Before I leave I copy down everything I had written on my dry-earase board that I need that was listed and salvage parts, and headed out.
As a back-up plan, I know of 3 more 1982 and earlier Mudstains at a sister Wrench-A-Part in Belton but that's over an hour and a half away.
Luckly this yard here and it's 80' donor had the column I needed, and a few other items I had on my list, but of course here's another hang up, I needed the sway bar too, worst part is that I'm in my convertible and that sway bar isn't gonna fit, so I'll be going back with the wife's Expedition to snatch that up tomorrow, along with the manual rack that's in it.
Ok so $80 later and I'm headed back to the laboratory (45min trip) with all my goodies I have acquired.

Your thinking this is cake, right? HA, did I mention the column didn't have a set of keys? NO!

So out come the lock pick set Magnum P.I. wanted to own and then I was able to fully disassemble the column, oh but wait!

The Q/R set-ip I put on, the hub doesn't have threaded bolt hole to take it off, Grrrrrr, so after some gentle prying (is there such a thing) I removed the hub, and proceeded to build a useable steering column, YAY!!

I could tell you about the Corbeau seats, and the seat track fiasco but, alas that would be another long drawn out crap story, let's just say that was a bitch too.

Hey at least all the steering is in and done, including the pump extension.

BTW did you notice I separated the water pump pulley so it's a single belt style?

Well it's been a bit of a push, I have two days from today before the first race, as you can guess it won't make it to the paint shop before then, and getting the finals buttoned up before Saturday is going to be tight.

Still have to replace the E-brake self adjust tabs, adjust the rear brake, and bleed the system, get it alined, and build the exhaust system, the last two being farmed out to local shops (on the exhaust side of things, the shop I'm taking it to will hopefully just let me pay them and allow me to do the work since I used to work there, and was the exhaust guy).

*edit: replace the winshield

There were more problems along this journey which kept me from take a POOP ton of photos like I normally do, one was the fact that the gas tank sending unit is unobtainiumn, but I was able to find someone on a facebook page that had one he was willing to pull out an mail to me.
2 weeks and $70 later it showed up, which allowed me to install the tank and finish the fuel system.

Then there was the drive shaft, for what ever reason (and there are many hypotheticals) the drive shaft was 2" too long, so I had to drive an hour into Austin drop off the drive shaft and have it shortened, rebalanced, and new u-joints installed, that was four hours of just driving alone, plus $230

As some of you know about projects like this, going back and forth to places like Lowe's and Tractor Supply nickle and dime you, aside from the fact that it's a 20min drive into town and back, at least the parts store delivers to me, but having to go get hardware and such I have to to leave and do that on my own.

Then I guess in my going blind from looking at wiring, I missed the starter solenoid wire, so I had to go back and cut open the harness that I had modified, and rewire it for the start button on the console, plus finish the wiring for the electric fuel pump, and the electric fan relay/fan, which included lying on my back under the dash for an uncomfortable amount of time (get old sucks), and of course if you forgot something, HA, you had to get up and crawl out of the cage, blah, blah, blah.

Install the fire system, which ment to also fabricate a small console to mount the "T" handle/rip cord, and the switches for the above mentioned electrical systems.

If I hadn't mentioned it before, the engine was sitting diagonal in the K-member, so I supported the engine removed the engine mount and ground away part of the pad, allowing the engine to swing around to the driver's side to be back straight with the rear axle, this also ment to re-drill the transmission crossmember to accommodate the repositioning (yes I looked at several different ways to relocate it, this was the most proficient way to tackle this).

The hole in the firewall for the clutch cable was too small so I had to go in and grind the hole out to allow for the firewall adjuster/cable.

The throttle cable, even though I have like 5 different ones, was also an issue since I didn't have the room to make a bracket coming off the intake, was mounted to a tab/bracket mounted to the booster on the master cylinder, yup, as strange as it sounds it works and doesn't pose a problem, nor bind, I'll get you a better picture of this later.

In the wiring department, rewire for using the internally regulated 88' Turbo Coupe alternator, and I am using the TFI modual/distributor with the latemodel high output coil, and no EEC IV computer, so there is no timing curve generated, basically the timing will be locked where I see applicable.

On top of this kludge is a Holley 350cfm 2bbl carb.

I do want to make mention since I have been so busy:

UGH! today was a long day, delayed in getting it to the alinement shop, because of brake bleeding issues and bad wheel cylinders, along with a faulty fuel filter leaking, a water leak, and now after running for a while an oil pressure sending unit leaking.

But she's under her own power and runs and drives.

Still need the aforementioned, alinement, plus exhaust, and a windshield since I broke that while putting in the cage. :/

Please come back down and drive any of them that you like (Beta car, The Cop Car, the Giha OR the Fairmont the Gulf car) a drive, we'll make a day of it.

We have a race this Saturday, so this will essentially be the shake down runs for this car, I get the new windshield put in today, and then I have to go and put exhaust on it, cross your fingers I can get that all done before Saturday.

As you will notice I also still have to put the windshield trim, cowl grille, wipers, and side view mirrors back on also, but here's what we have so far:

Good work-have fun!! Its amazing how much different a notch looks from the side after looking at my SVO for so many years. With the tall sidewalls it looks sooooo short!

We have SPEC'd the stock sized tires for this series:

225-60-15 on the Turbine/Bullet Hole wheels
225-50-16 on the Pony wheels

Each has a little handling differences but it comes down to owner affordability (Pony wheels are quite a bit more to get your hands on) handling preferences, and weight (Turbines are the lightest factory wheel at 17lbs, Bullet Hole wheels are 19.5lbs and the Pony's are even more) for unsprung weight.

Although, this project is still not quite finished, and yes I'll keep updating, I will let the cat out of the bag, that we did infact acquire an 84' SVO that we have for a future project so keep your eyes peeled for that project in the up and coming months:
