Does anyone anywhere have any information regarding the 87 DOHC SVO engine/cylinder head? Aside from the black and white photo that's online. I'd like to explore finding a machinist to perhaps make these. Much like Kaase did with the Boss 9 heads.

It looks like Paul Becker has one. (http://forums.themustangsource.com/f726/mustang-gt-e-468932/index3/)
Beyond the head, you'd have to fabricate cams, bearings, pulleys, intake and exhaust. The DOHC ports look NOTHING like the stock ports.

It figures.....he won't do a damn thing with it either. It'll sit on a shelf somewhere and collect dust. Thanks for the link btw.

I know what's all involved....that's the idea. However, without a complete full size (preferably working) model or some engineering documentation/blueprints, it's all just a dream. I've got to have something to take to a machinist. And Paul won't relinquish one of his most prized possessions to anyone for any reason. And I wouldn't expect him to. Well, if my last name was Morton he might but otherwise, not happening. So, it'll sit on a shelf somewhere in the back 40 until it's forgotten.

IMHO, you wouldn't want to start with that anyway - it's a 30+ year old design that was modeled on the Cosworth BDA.
At least start with something that has variable cam timing for both shafts, real valve springs, current port and chamber design, etc. A LOT has changed in head and chamber design over the last 35 years.

Maybe I'll just wait and install one of the 4 pot Ecoboost crate engines. Hmmm.....

One major factor to consider is ALL the new engines will require something with a CAN bus and OBD2 processor - with lots of assorted electronics and wiring. Or a VERY complex stand-alone system that is capable of managing cam timing (for each cam), shift points, fuel, ignition, etc.
A worthy task indeed.
Makes we long for my 1973 Europa with the 1.8 Liter BDA and twin 40DCOE's...

If you find out where to buy one, let me know. (p.s. I already know about Ford Power services, but I'm not a builder to get one through that route, I'm waiting for the motorsport ecoboost.)

The rumor on the street is they will be offered out of the Ford Racing catalog. Just like the Coyote, they will be available with the stand alone electronics package to make 'em run. Supposedly, this year but no word as of yet. Last I heard, they were ironing out the standalone ECU and harness. That engine in the Focus ST makes 252hp and 270lbft and it'll run to 60 in around 6 seconds. That's in a 3200lb car. Put that into an SVO that weighs around 200lbs less and you have the makings of a pretty fun car while keeping the original intent of the SVO intact.

Works for me!
Unfortunately there currently isn't an aftermarket to make them as fast as a Lima's potential.
Not to mention issues with mating it to a T5.

Probably better to mate it to one of the newer TC 7-speed Getrag boxes. But then the electronics get even more complex.
One of the reasons I like manuals is the lack of electronics.

One of the reasons I like manuals is the lack of electronics. True dat.
But once you drive a 6 or 7 speed TC gearbox, you'll want to have that complexity (feature) in everything you own.

Why not put the B234 Volvo head on there if you need a DOHC head? There are lots of folks running the Volvo head.

the volvo head isnt very straight forward and i beleive there is already a debate on turboford somewhere

I've seriously considered the 234 head after some research. My conclusion: Rube Goldberg comes to mind. It's an awful lot of money and work for what would appear to be minimal gains. I've also not heard of anyone throwing down their dyno sheet to validate performance after the swap and the ass-dyno is highly subjective. While the design for the 87 DOHC 2.3 is nearly 30 years old by now, it was designed for the 2.3 lima engine. One would still run into the issue of cams and fabrication of the ancillary equipment but you'd be starting with something that fits from the onset.

not much of a debate, bo ran the flow bench numbers; his stage 3 port job on a turbo d port flows the same as the volvo head at .400" lift and higher. below that, the volvo is 10% better.
