Exhaust Upgrade Advise

I have decided my next mod to the car is going to be exhaust. My car currently has a stock type Dynomax replacement system. I want to change to 3" downpipe, eliminate the cat and then go to dual 2.5 out the back for a mostly stock look. Looks like the easiest solution would be to buy Stingers 3" to dual setup "Mandrel bent aluminized steel exhaust system for Turbo Coupes and Mustang Fox Body turbo cars. Features 3" downpipe and intermediate pipe that splits into dual 2.5" tubing for dual mufflers. This goes from the turbo outlet to the mufflers." Think I want to go with Magnaflow mufflers then just buy a set of the 2.5" LX stainless tailpipes from LMR http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/item/LRS-5212PR/86-97-Mustang-LX-Stainless-Steel-Tailpipes

Anyone use this setup? The regular LX style tailpipes work just fine in the SVO right? Would the above be a bolt in or is it going to require a trip to an exhaust shop? Is there a better option out there?

having an 86 you have dual exhaust already so should be plug and play. keep in mind there is a section between the mufflers and catbacks known as the flow-tubes. aka 1 foot of kinda bent exhaust lol.


i was just looking at these tails earlier.. i have 99-04 catback and while it works, it doesnt contour as well as this one does. they look pretty good :)

I made my 3" turbo out let. Bought a 3" DP from Merkur Depo and a 3" HF cat from Catco. I had an exhaust shop make the 3" Y pipe to 3" inlet 2.5" outlet mufflers with 2.5" stainless LX over the axle/tail pipes. Works great! My suggestion to all doing exhaust mods is save and do it all at once. It saves time and money in the long run.

Since my car has a pretty new Dynomax sock replacement could I just do the Stinger 3" down pipe, mid pipe and y pipe and attach to my current mufflers and tails? His y is 2.5" out but I could get a couple of reducers to go to the 2.25" mufflers and tails. Don't really see as I would lose any performance doing this since two 2.25" pipes still flow more than a single 3". Am I missing something?

I did exactly what you discribed - it worked great. I had a muffler shop modify the y-pipe and install the Cat. The Magna Flows sounded great too.

Your plan should work fine. It is designed to attach to standard Mustang tailpipes for this very reason: to give customers options for different tailpipe brands.

If your current 2.25" tailpipes are mandrel bent (no crushed sections) you probably won't notice a power loss. If they are crush bent then you'll certainly lose some power compared to the mandrel bent 2.5" version.
