I've got a small oil leak which of course drips onto the cat making it smell. For the life of me I can't find where it is originating from. Definitely not the top of the engine or the turbo also not blowing out the dipstick. Everything on top is super clean. After a drive I can see a drop or so on the bottom rear of the pan but the pan seal all seems dry. I wipe any oil off at the end of a drive so the bottom of the car stays clean. Rear main maybe? but the bell housing doesnt generally have any oil. I do notice it looks like it drips off of the floor pan of the car onto the cat but that is probably blowing back from someplace. I know this is a usual suspect with a 5.0 but don't hear much about it on the 2.3. Any other specific place to check?

Transmission rear seal, where the driveshaft yoke slips in. It is directly above the cat.

That wouldn't explain the oil that shows up on my pan though.

With an 86 I would look at the low oil sender in the pan !

Left (drivers) side of oil pan, just below and slightly forward of the oil filter. I you remove it and look inside (after the oil comes out), you would see the side of the 4th main bearing cap.

Everyone knows where the main bearing caps are, right?

Best bet would be to lock the cat out of the garage! :cool:







On a serious note, I agree that it is probably the oil level sender in the side of the pan.

Saving SVO spending money for your 3" down pipe and mid pipe to 2.5 duels. I'll check the sending unit.
