View Full Version : Turbo Oil Feed "Restriction"?

I've been doing some research on turbo oil feed lines as I have a brand new Garrett T3/T4 to plumb and read somewhere that turbo oil seals are generally only good to 25-35 psi whereas the motor's oil pump is capable of making much more under RPM. "They " have stated that a restriction needs to be placed in the turbo oil feed circuit to prevent this gradient. As a firefighter, this seems counter-intuitive to me. As a restriction is placed, pressure on the other side of the restriction goes up and volume goes down. Am I on the point here, or do I need to pass the bong to the next guy now.

Oil line feed restrictors have been used in certain specific applications, as the one I'm about to point out, but not on the original equipment SVO T-3 turbocharger for production purposes.
The Buick V-6 Tubos on the Indycars several decades ago (Roberto Guerrero,Kenny Bernstein, 240 MPH) ran a .045" restrictor.
Ball bearing turbo installations may suggest a restrictor, since they don't require as much oil flow as the T-3.
The original equipment "seals" on a T-3 are not truly seals. They are similar to piston rings, and have a gap at the end. A certain minimal amount of oil is likely ( or guaranteed? ) to escape.
The original equipment oil feed line has a wall thickness that appears to be the restriction that concerns you. Maybe Ford engineers had it figured out that way to negate the need for extra restrictor parts.
