Im looking to get some new wheels for a car show in feb... I like the drag look, Ive always had and built drag cars so needless to say I'm looking into some fat and skinnies on my 84. Mine is an early 84 with slapper bars and no quad shocks... Ive fit 15x10 6.5bs on fox bodies before without many issues... you guys think they would fit in an SVO wheelwell the same? Im guessing, but there's probably a rear axle width difference... Whats teh biggest wheel you guys have seen or installed in the rear?

I dont know if a 15" wheel will clear the front brake calipers. You may have to stick with a 16".

Yes, most 15" wheels will clear the stock 10.9-11.0" front rotors. Not sure about the 6.5" back-spacing though. Fortunately there's no quad shock body in the way on a slapper car.

I have had 15x4 on the front and 15x8 in the rear already but the 8s were the wrong offset and rubbed everywhere.... pic......

You can roll the inner rear fenders a bit for some added clearance, but if the car lowers on a launch, it's gonna be rub-rub time. Roll them anyway just to get the sharp edges away from that soft, expensive rubber.

Thats another option for sure... On my past cars Ive always ran an airbag on the right coil spring.... keeps it from rolling much on launch. Do you know the width of the SVO rear axle compared to a std 8.8 with drums?

Tony does. He will post when he sees this.

From my research i think the SVO rear axle is 3/4" wider per side...
Ive been searching the net and thinking alot. I think Im going to go with these to keep it drivable anywhere, and go the road racey route, they have 7" wide and 8" wide that should work perfect. I think the front bore will need to be massaged alittle by reading others posts. Other than that they should work just fine.
Im thinking 225-245/45/17 on the front and 245-275/40-45/17 on the rear

I would suggest to install same size wheel and tire front and rear. Then you can rotate the tires.
With a front-heavy FOX, if you were to stagger, the wider ones should go in the front for better handling. But it might look weird then.
That's a nice looking wheel in polished.

I gotcha... another buddy said the same thing.... but I really dont drive it alot. maybe 1000 miles per year so rotating is kind of a moot point.
I thought the SVOs were almost 50/50? lack of weight in the rear would naturally dictate a larger tire to balance traction no?
All I know is mine abuses the stock 255s pretty easy, especially getting onto the freeway... spinnin aint winnin!

I have 245/45/17 on the front and rear and you will have to roll the quarter lip or youll tear up the side wall on a hard bump. I also had a small rub issue up front with the one bolt at the bottom of the front wheel opening where the bumper cover wraps around. I replaced it with a button head bolt and no more rub.

What wheel width and offset are you running?

I am running the 2005 Mustang GT wheels ( I beliive they are the same offset as stock) with 245-45-17's all around and have a slight rub on big bumps in the rear. I do like your wheels!

Dang! A 245 rubs on the rear? thats not much tire at all. Ive ran 28x11.50 on my fox stangs with 15x10 and 6.5bs. I know the SVO rear is about 3/4" wider per side...........
Does anyone know the definitive offset or backspace of the stock wheels? Ive seen posts of anywhere from 38-42? Ive been using a backspace of 5.625" or offset of 38 for my searching.
I guess that could help make sure I get the right wheels...

These are on super blowout and look nice... the offsets look like they would fit

Does anyone know this car? or specs on the wheels? This is the look Im looking for
Half of the problem is diff suspensions, control arms etc seems everyone is using something different

SVO wheels are 16" x 7" with a 44.5mm offset (5.75" back spacing).
The SVO axles are 1.25" longer than a Fox axle. In addition the rotor hat is 0.175" thicker than the drum. So the total effective difference in track per side is 1.425".

I had a set of tri-bars (17") with 245/45/17 tires on them and that was about as big as you get without rubbing. The car was lowered with Ford "B" springs and the fender lips where rolled. No comparison handling wise, to the stock size SVO rim & 225/50/16 tires - the larger rims and tires made a huge difference (maybe the tire was just way better?).
Not to say that you can't find a rim offset or back spacing that will allow you to stuff I larger wheel or tire under the SVO, but if you know what will work, and the perimeters of that size, it may help you find what your looking for. Of course - I am talking about a stock SVO here with no real suspension mods or changes.
Once you know what works, put an alternate into a wheel calculator to see where the differences will be. NOT A GUARANTEE, but can help you make a educated guess if something will work and where the tire areas will be pushed.
One thing that people get confused on is offset and backspacing. Make sure you know where the distances are measured from when determining offset and backspacing.
For offset - you need to measure the inside lip to inside lip to find the centerline of the rim to determine the offset distance. On a 16x7 SVO rim, the distance inside lip to inside lip is 7". Half of this distance is 3.5" which is the dimension line from which the offset is measured from.
Backspacing is similar, except that you are measuring a distance from where the rim mounts to the hub to the outside lip of the rim. (On a SVO rim, the distance from outside to outside lip is something like 8.1", when people assume that this number is 7" and the confusion starts)
The only reason that these two terms are confusing, is because people tend to extrapolate a backspacing from a offset when they are two separate things.
Just remember which term you are dealing with and where the dimensions are measured from and you will be ok. Dont make assumptions, don't confuse the two terms, and always measure.
The calculators of today, show all of the tire perimeters needed. You can see what I am talking about in the wheel calculator link below.
