I am getting frustrated with cracked cast iron heads. Toying with the idea of Essy head and 2277 cam. Can anyone tell me if this cams power band is too high for a stock bottom end. Also does the Essy D port take all the stock style manifolds and cam cover? Thanks Bruce

Very complex answer.

The D-port I have uses 1/4-20 cam cover bolts versus the stock 6mm ones. I heard that later heads (probably after I complained about it!) have the proper 6mm thread hoes. Call and ask first. The intake side (all nine holes) use a thread insert that accepts the stock 8mm bolts.

The exhaust side are just threaded into the aluminum in the stock 10x1.5mm thread size. If you have the exhaust ports opened up (which I highly recommend as the as-cast Essy d-port flow kinda sucks) you must be VERY careful to not over-tighten the exhaust manifold bolts as the aluminum material is very soft and thin. There's not enough room for thread coils without welding - so be very careful.

Next have the head machined to accept stepped washers in the holes where the bead bots/studs go. You WILL crush out that area the first time you torque the head down. Again, the material is very soft.

I also recommend having a good head shop fix the head valve seat area and blend it into the chamber and port areas. The one I received was REALLY rough as delivered from Essy and took $600 of a local machine shops time to make it usable. And then have someone that knows how to do it setup the cam and rocker geometry. And verify proper clearances between all the valve train components for the cam lift you will be using.

With straight-up cam timing, the 2277 starts it's progressive climb into the power band about 3800 RPM. I've taken mine to 8K without a significant drop in torque so it'll certainly spin faster than you will want to take your bottom end. Advancing the cam 4-8 [crank] degrees will move that power band down slightly, but there's still not much below 3500. Be prepared to slip the clutch or stay a gear lower than normal as the 2277 is NOT a torque monster.

HTH!

If I drive it to 6500 will it make good power or does it have to turn 7500 to go?

It will do just fine at 6500 but it will feel wrong. Confusing?

In most "normal" engines the power level is dropping a noticeable amount by the time you reach the stock redline so it feels normal to shift to get back to the torque peak and keep accelerating. You now, like you don't need the tach to know you're past the power peak and it's time to shift.

Not so with the 2277 (at last in a head that flows well). It will still be pulling at 6500 with no drop in power. You will need to plan ahead to not hit the rev limiter. In a way it's kinda fun.

The idea is to get a PIMP system and the new head this year and tune it. Next winter pull the engine and rebuild the bottom end. I can't do both nor do I want to tune a new system on a brand new motor. I should be able to set a 6500 red line with a PIMP correct?

I don't know the PIMP system, but I would assume so.

The Pimp is Stinger's deal. He should chime in with an answer. If not check out the forum section of his site.

Yep, read about it on TF. Iirc it's a MSx? with an EEC harness adapter to make it an electrical plug-in?

This was my understanding. Its a Micro Squirt with auto tune, for the EEC 4 harness. Just haven't read enough to know if you can do redline.

nothing is auto tune i have found out of the last few years you need someone near you that understands these sytems or a good dyno shop

Yes, you can set it to whatever rpm you want. FYI, I wouldn't worry about taking a stock shortblock to 7000rpm as long as you've got valve springs and a cam that can go that high.

Nope, it's actually all in a factory case so no adapter is needed. 3188

Autotune has come a long ways in the last few years. I posted videos on YouTube of tuning an SVO from start to finish in under an hour using the auto tune feature. It most certainly works VERY well when used properly.

I'd like to post something about the PiMP on this forum so people know what it does and such but I don't really know where things like that go or what the rules are for stuff like that yet.

After talking to Bo port and listening to Mike I have decided I would be better off with a cast iron head for my street car. Durability of iron vs alluminum for mounting surfaces and holes being the main reason. Also Bo's head will make the power goals I have. (300 or more HP) I would like more info on the PIMP system as the U Tube video did little for me.

Well I want to make over 300 HP on pump gas. I started this thread to make info on Esslinger heads easy to search. See my project thread for more on my project http://www.svocop.com/forum/showthread.php?1408-brsvo-s-ongoing-project

I have followed your thread there, but you just mentioned talking with Bo and stating his head met your goals. I was hoping for more detail. What did you learn that you could share? Are you getting one of Bo's heads? Are you going to get one of his cam kits? Are you going to get larger injectors? What are you thinking for fuel management? With the combination you are thinking of, where do you think your HP and torque will be?

Well I want to make over 300 HP on pump gas. Note that "pump gas" means different things across the country. For example some places have 93 or 94 octane pump petrol versus AZ-CA-NV has a especially poor blend of 91 that makes less power than "91" in other states.

The fuel differences alone will account for 25+ HP.

I'll post all the info here once I am informed of the proper way to do that. In the meantime, there is a ton of info here: http://www.stinger-performance.com/universalparts.html

If you have any specific questions that aren't answered on that page, or you want more info about something on that page, let me know.

Sorry to hijack but question for Stinger. I assume the PIMP can easily retune as I add parts? Meaning, I would be able to tune with minimal mods and later on add a head/cam combo as funds permit. I really want to ditch the VAM now. I have read your articles, webpage and watched your vids.

Really looking forward to you posting a PIMP thread!

thanks

Go take a look at the forums off his site. Lots of great information and excellent support by Stinger and Wes K.

Sorry for the late reply, been swamped with work and haven't been on here for a couple weeks.

Yes, it will work with a stock 2.3T, an 800hp 2.3T, and anything in between, as well as a 5.0 (stock or modified) and most other Ford engines of the era.
