View Full Version : Intercooler Question
My 85.5 SVO appears to have a (mostly) black intercooler, with raised silver areas on the sides. The top is silver (bare metal) and the interior area is painted black. Is this correct? I have seen photos of the intercooler that are the exact opposite, where the sides are silver/grey and the raised areas are black.... Just curious if the intercooler was the same for all 3 years of SVO production, and if I have the correct color combo in my car.
Thanks!

Yes, same for all SVOs. The core is removable in the SVO IC - remove the bunch of 8mm hex head bolts on the bottom plate of the IC assembly and the core comes out for easy cleaning. Note direction of red silicone seals and DO NOT damage them.
The 87/88 TC used a slightly different unit that is all welded together. Post a pic and we can easily tell you what you got.
I don't think the SVO cooler core was painted. I seem to recall it was just a plain aluminum finish. In any case anodizing would be better as paint will have some negative effect on heat transfer.

This is what an NOS one looks like. Hard to tell in the pics but the core is almost a flat black finish.

That is an SVO charge cooler, with brackets and bolts. Looks to be in excellent shape too.

Should do, it's NOS!!!! DaveS found it for me at a swap meet a few years ago.
That is what I thought. I might have messed up the terminology. I meant the charge cooler. Saw pics the other day, and it had been painted like this:

Mine, when I bought it: http://i1029.photobucket.com/albums/y356/dmoglin/1985%20Ford%20Mustang%20SVO/DSCF1772-1.jpg
It is now: http://i1029.photobucket.com/albums/y356/dmoglin/1985%20Ford%20Mustang%20SVO/2013-01-06_10-25-21_866_zpseacc63d5.jpg and I'm going to clean/sand/re-paint it as best I can.
