ignition switch : break off bolts

I need to replace the ignition switch, and the part guy at the dealership told me these bolts aren't available anymore.. can I put "normal" bolts instead?

And whats the best way to remove these bolts? drill and easy-out? or make a groove with a grinder and remove it with a screwdriver?

Cut a slot in the bolt with a hacksaw blade so you can get them out with a flatblade screwdriver. Vice grips also work. Reuse the originals or take them to the local hardware store and match them with so regular bolts.

The shear bolts are VERY soft and you can easily use a sharp chisel to make a slot indentation in the head, then use a flat blade screwdriver to remove. They're not tight. Reuse the old ones or visit your fav hardware store and get some the same thread and length in Phillips head.

Or, take that cold chisel and make an oblique strike on the circumference of the bolt head. It should spin it enough that it'll come right off.

Nice to hear, I'll try that! And btw, my haynes book tells me to put the switch to the "run" position before removing it because the new one will come in this position, and the mustang monthly article says I should put it in the "lock" position... which one tells the truth?

They're talking about the ignition lock, not the ignition switch when putting it in run position. The new switch is locked on the off position until you remove the wire clip to install it.
