View Full Version : Exhaust Smell in Cabin

I posted this on another website, some of you may have seen a while back - I haven't had much time to work on the SVO lately and have just finished a couple fixes and now have it very driveable. Here's the situation:

- when the car is started and interior fan is on vent or floor, there is exhaust smell coming into the cabin.
- when the engine is on and the fan is on "max", the smell goes away

Does anyone have an idea where the vent opening is and why I'd be getting the exhaust smell through the floor or vents?

Do you have cowl seal , its at the back side of the hood ? the only air intake for the heater, is the cowl vent a head of windshield.

Not sure, how should I check? Is there a hole or a rubber seal?

The seal runs from fender to fender it seals to the underside of the hood , look for tears in the seal , if there is breach some where along the seal it will pull engine fums in though the cowl vent.

MAX also is the recirculate position where no fresh (outside) air is allowed in.

If there's exhaust smell getting in through the front cowl vent, you have an exhaust leak in the engine compartment. Fix that.

Thought it'd be good to advise that the smell (more like Engine bay smell than a leak in the exhaust) went away with the install of the new firewall to hood seal. Thanks again for the help!

A minor consideration (even though not cowl related) is the emergency brake rubber seal that the rod passes through. Every car of the period has this issue due to the deterioration and dry rot. New repros are available.

Also check the hatch seal. My old 93 LX DD had a seal that was kinda beat up and during the winter when I didn't have windows open I'd get a whiff of exhaust at a stoplight.

There is also a rubber seal that sits under the shift boot. If you don't have that you can also get exhaust or oil smells entering the cabin. I think the SVO one is different than a regular mustang but the repro for an 87-93 will work in a pinch.

Yeah, I grabbed a 87-93 from the JY and cut some of it out for around the shifter in mine. No more heat and road noise coming from around there!
