So I finally got my pcv system in order and it ran good for about a day and then stated smoking heavily upon boost.
I've only run it a couple times but after it warms up I can get it to full boost and get thick heavy smoke screen out the tail pipe and from then if I try to throttle it I only get to 0psi, no pressure but no vacuum either and still some smoke but not like the first pull of the drive.
I pulled off the intake tubes and found pooling oil in the compressor inlet tube and a small trail of oil in the throttle body.
There is shaft play in the turbo now, I can only barely get to it so i need a closer look with the turbo on the bench.
The hoses in my pcv system are clear and I don't see any oil there so that only leaves blown carbon seal in the turbo right?
I can order a rebuild kit for around $60 and I feel confident I can rebuild it myself, have three local turbo shop balance the parts and be done with it.
My over build gene is telling me I need to put a t4 compressor on it though, I am resisting but there's a ats turbo for sale for $75 locally.
If I tear it apart and its been running the housings will run the t4, if it only needs seals I'll keep it stock for now.
I'llstart getting pics of progress in a couple days.

Is the play up and down, or in and out?

I had up and down shaft play, not end play, Thrust bearing was still ok but the shaft bearings and carbon seal were shot. I suspect the carbon seal failed and as the oil went up the wheel it threw it off balance and wiped out the bearings and that let the wheel touch the housing :(
So now Im on the hunt for either somethig to get me by or a upgrade to what I have, I cant really afford either one right now :(

Bummer. We now have OEM replacement oil feed lines available. Cheap insurance when replacing the turbo. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the Feed line when replacing the turbo.

I saw those, they are nice but I have a stingers braided feed and return lines and there is NO WAY I can afford a new turbo right now :(
I blew a little air thru both oil lines and theres no blockage.Im looking for a compressor side locally, like I said The ATS turbos are t04B, not prefered but its rebuilt allready and only $65. Im HOPING the center cartridge will simply bolt to my hot side housing and I only have to put the ATS cold wheel on my current shaft and, put on my hot side backing plate/housing on the ATS and I should be ready to roll?
Lets hope it works that simple :)

I have a stingers braided feed and return lines
it is a fact that the stock oil return line is the best for the SVO all others have way to much restriction for returning the oil and the result is the seals in the turbo get blown out.
if you have the stock return line I would recommend using that one after you have your turbo rebuilt.

My stock one was cracked sooo, :( The return line I have from Shannon is the larger return line, I see no way this can flow less then the stock return, its pretty massive! I was worried about that when I bought this one but after looking at it it seemed clear to me.
I believe the reason my turbo leaked was due to my negligence, The seal blew right when I was messing around and I didnt realize my pcv was backwards and I had pumped 2 quarts of oil out of the motor :( I looked down and my pressure dropped to 3-4 psi !! I was out on a backroad and decided to gently run it back to get some oil, about 15 minutes of driving with LITTLE pressure! It was shortly after that the turbo seal went out on me.

OK, so doing some research I found these measurements
Mustang Wheel: 409096-0013; 60 trim TB03 1.83 inducer/2.37 exducer
The best I can tell the ATS turbo is a t3/t4 with a t31 turbine wheel and t04B. I wanted to use the entire CHRA and cold side from the ATS since it is rebuilt but instead it looks like I have to use my turbine wheel atleast and at that point I might as well rebuild my CHRA and use the ATS t4 compressor. Im thinking of buying new wheels for it, I dont think the t04B wheel will fit my car very well.

I finally got the ATS turbo in my hand today.
The CHRA is oil only :(
The ATS turbo measurements are : T04b compressor wheel 6 blade "h" trim exducer diameter is 2.75 and inducer is 2.29 .58 AR housing
The turbine is also of the T4 variety and not the t3 as I had thought it to be, T04B wheel p trim Diameter is major diameter 2.9ish and minor diameter 2.53ish So I cant use that with my housing unless I machine it out.
the current plan is to rebuild my stock CHRA and reusing the .63 turbine housing, stock t3 turbine wheel and the T04B H trim compressor wheel with a .58 AR housing.
I know NOTHING about running this on the map but when I tried I couldnt keep it off the surge line unless I started boost near 3500RPM and maxed boost at 4300 RPM :( I dont know if Im doing that right but if I am is that going to be as unstreet friendly as I think it is? On an otherwise stock motor, brown tops/small vam does anyone know if my lag will be that bad and if my power band is really only going to be under 1K RPM? Would it be better or worse to machine out my t3 turbine housing to accept the P trim To4B wheel?

You're correct, the H trim is a surge monster on a 2.3 engine. Not a good option that's for sure.

That's what I was afraid of :( Im hoping a BPV will help enough so I can run it until I can afford a better choice. Quick question about compressor maps, does running a t3 turbine affect the map?

OK, got it all back together and running. So far I have only put on about 7 miles in town with some short burst upto 55'ish. Im running a cheap digital boost gauge, seems like its got its own lag going on, Ill have to play with it some more. According to the gauge I start getting a single psi at about 2500rpm then it builds to about 12 psi at just above 5000rpm, but damn does it get there quick :) The bottom end does feel like its got more umph then with the old turbo and that's before I even get any boost. Now I did play around with how the vacuum lines run to the bcs, I don't have a port on my turbo and forgot to drill and tap one so for now Im running a line straight from the vacuum tree to the BCS with a tee in it for the BPV, then from the BCS straight to the wastegate. Should I run it back the way it was stock? so far it seems to be doing good but I haven't had a chance to stretch it out though, this is just what I can do under 55mph, I almost get there in first :( So tomorrow I will try to hit the freeway and see what I can find out when Im allowed to run it up to 75 :)

one weird thing I didn't expect, I mean I have had cars with BOV before and knew the BPV would not sound the same but I didn't expect it to sound like a small dog barking in a Tupperware container between hard shifts! WTH did I get a defective Bosch? Sound is weird but luckily anyone that hears it is way behind me by the time they can look towards me :)

I would suggest to get a pressure source closer to the turbo outlet. Thjere can be some significant lag times between the actual compressor wheel building pressure and when the vacuum tree and associated hoses see3pressure.
First job of a wastegate function is to protect the turbo. Second is to protect the engine. Tertiary is to stay within the rules of the racing class.

Yeah, Im going to drill and tap the turbo outlet to add the source there. I got it out on the freeway last night. It runs better then the stock turbo, on the freeway Im getting a pretty reliable reading of 2200 I get my first psi and at 5800 on a hard pull Im seeing 15 psi. My lower end still seems stronger then the stock and lag doesn't seem any worse. There will be more test and tune in a couple weeks, this week is getting ready to go back to Hawaii for another week.
