For the longest time, I'd find thread protectors in the luggage compartment of my SVO, and didn't have the foggiest idea where they came from. Now I do. While unloading some parts I recently acquired, I noticed the following and the answer was apparent. The luggage cover "brackets" were pre-installed in the quarter panels and the thread protectors were so the assembly line workers didn't get cut by the attachment screws. Here are a few pictures of the backside of the interior quarter panel trim:

That makes sense to me. Thanks for an enlightening thread. You do learn something new everyday.

If you run up on some of those without speaker holes let me know I need several sets.

Dave - you hear of many judges inspecting the back of those panels??

I have been hearing they will now us use flashlights starting this year. So far they have not banned x-ray glasses for judging.

Mike...Not seen that, but you do have to remember my MCA days were as a judge of Boss 302s/351s and 429s; I saw lots of things in those days.

Oddest show judging I saw was as follows: Two cars (of the GM variety and not at a Ford show) were too close to call based on the "normal" judging techniques and (I am guessing here) there could only be one first place car. The way the tie was broken was the car whose owner took the time when setting up to rotate all the valve stems to the 6 O'clock position is the one that won first place. I would guess that if those judges could have checked for thread protectors, they would have.

Kevin...flashlights were available for judges to use during MCA judging. I can honestly say I never used x-ray glasses ;)

Yeah, we used up the batteries in the x-ray glasses doing something else. OOPS!

Flashlights have not been permitted at MCA judging for the last 10 years. It has been discussed several times in judging clinics. It's nearly impossible to see much at indoors shows due to lack of lighting.
