breather for 'TURBO' valve cover?

Hi,

Anyone know the part # for the breather for this valve cover?

Or how to make an adapter for it to work with a later 'push in' style breather (I have one from the xr4ti the motor came from).

(Also, what years would this valve cover have come from?)

Other than the custom paint scheme, that looks like an 83.5-89 cam cover EXCEPT for the 87/88 TC models that were dished in the middle. The factory used the early breather can on that cover with a short piece of 3/8" PCV hose between the two nipples.

Alternately you can remove that hose nipple on the rear of the cover and push imn the early small nipple breather directly into the cover hole.

To remove hose nipple: Push the smooth end of an appropriately sized drill bit into the nipple and grab the outside with some small vice grips (drill bit keeps it from collapsing). The gently twist the nipple/drill assembly until it loosens up, then rotate left/right while pulling up. Lather, rinse,repeat until it's out. Be careful to not un-round the hole in the cover.

Clean the hole and underside of any remaining residue (such as locking/retaining compound or metal shavings. Install new breather.

Lastly modify hte hose on the end of the breather tube that connects to the turbo inlet to reach to the side of the breather can.

Thanks Mike. Any idea on a part # for the smaller breather? RockAuto, Napa etc. only show the twist on breather that looks like for a NA.

If I use that type of valve cover I think Im going to thread the hole and simply screw in a nipple, put on a hose with a check valve to let air in to the motor and not out and run that to the stock location on the turbo. As I understand it the valve cover breather doesn't vent the head to the intake but instead the opposite, fresh air in to the motor there and gases/pressure back out to the intake via the breather under the intake. If you dont care about being factory its a good idea, even if you feel it breathes both ways a small $20 ebay catch can is the right size for the valve cover then you don't need the catch can.

Air must freely flow in BOTH ways.

When the intake is below atmospheric (under vacuum), it pulls in filtered, fresh air to hel clean the oil of combustion vapors. Before PCV systems, engines had their oil changed every 1000 miles. They also ran leaded fuels, which also helped keep the oi very dirty. Now, with unleaded fuels AND PCV systems, we have 6000-15,000 mile oil service intervals.

When the manifold pressure is NOT below atmospheric, or under boost, it allows excessive combustion gasses to be vented out of the crnakcase instead of blowing out seals, dipsticks, cam cover gaskets, etc.

Could. But that would defeat the purpose of the Type 4 PCV system and would not cause a lower-than-atmosphere pressure in the crankcase.
