View Full Version : Serpentine belt conversion

A friend of mine has a 2.3 notch with the serpentine set up on it. He is going to junk the car (his daughter wrecked it) and I can take what I need to do the conversion onto my 84. Can someone point me to a link or give me the conversion for dummies version. I have decent mechanical skills but I just don't want to miss anything when I take the parts. I also have a stock alternator so is this the time to do that conversion as well??

You can keep your existing alternator by simply swapping the v-belt pulley for the serpentine one.
I did this conversion on our '84 Turbo RS Capri. You'll need the bracket on the driver's side of the engine for the alternator and power steering pump along with all the pulleys (belt tensioner/idler also) and hardware. To keep your existing power steering pump, the pulley will need to be swapped and that requires a puller for the pulley. Autozone likely has a free rent-able tool.

Also is there any point in grabbing the engine wiring warness out of the non turbo 2.3?

ive used some to repair some of my damaged bits including the newer style Distributor pill. sure why not

From what I understand you can use a stock harness on the turbo motor, you just need to repin for the turbo ecu and add the vam harness. When you think of a stand alone engine harness, no AC, gauges or alt wiring, there's not that much left, injectors, tps, IAC, dizzy, ect, vam, power, grounds and a couple others,
As far a what's interchangeable with your harness? I don't know, I know Ford changed their plug ends on occasion but their might still be things of use on it.

I pulled the stuff today, couple more questions; Can I just leave the power steering pump in from the donor car (92 or 93 I think) and what tensions the serpentine belt? The AC side had the tensioner but there was just the idler wheel on the alternator side and thats all I'm using.

Thanks Mike I have the alternator side just like your pictures as I'm not using the AC. So there is no tensioning on that side.
Will the newer power steering pump work? Anyone?

Thanks Mike I have the alternator side just like your pictures as I'm not using the AC. So there is no tensioning on that side. I hrtink you misunderstand. There are no static idler (guide) pulleys - the one pulley IS the tensioner.
The belt path goes, clockwise, from water pump, to tensioner, to alternator, to PS pump, to crank. On the AC side, that one odd pulley on the top IS the tensioner. Water pump outer, AC comp, tensioner.
No tensioner, then no workie.

Okay I will have to double check. On the car I took it off of the pulley next to the water pump seemed to just be an idler pulley. If its a tensioner I need to get my glasses redone.

A few more pics. An idler puller - one that does not move - has a solid mount. A tensioner assembly has a larger, circular spring inside it and the idle pulley that is mounted to it is offset on an eccentric. Here's some pics of a different engine that uses two idlers and one tensioner (which has an idler pulley as part of the assembly), Note that all of the idler pulleys are the same pulley in most cases - but one of them is mounted to a tensioner thingie (and that thingie mounts to the engine with two bolts.
Static idlers are shown with circles, These work as a belt guide only. Tensioner assy is at end of arrow.
