Fuel tank to filter hose

I'm looking for replacement fuel hose that goes from the tank (pump) to the filter. All I can find listings for are for 86 & on. Are these the same for 84 cars or do I have to use a 86 type fuel pump set up?

The twin pump system is different than the single. It goes from the in-tank, low-pressure pump to the high-pressure chassis-mounted pump. Then there is a small line that connects from the high-pressure pump to the filter.

It's not difficult ot make a new one from bilk hose and new fittings. Do you have the old one to know the length and type of end fittings? Iirc the 84 tank outlet hose is about 3 feet long with straight fittings on both ends?

Yes I have the old line, the fitting at the tank pump had a leak. Changed O ring but still leaking. Are these fittings available?

Yes, they're available. Usually in 18" pigtail with a double-barbed connector". You want the 5/16 tube with a 5/16 fitting. You could also but two ends separately and a short piece of tubing and assembly what you need. Napa will have the needed parts in stock in most cases.

My personal advice would be to replace the whole assembly. Iirc you'll need about 3 feet of 5/16 tuning and (2) straight 5/16 Ford duckbill fittings. The tubing is available in 10 and 25 foot lengths. Leave it in the sun for a day (summer is best time to do this!) and let the "coil effect" relax a bit.

Having the proper assembly tools is a big help.

Also make sure the metal tubes you're pushing the fittings onto are smooth, rust and burr free. And add a small drop of oil (or a squirt of isopropanol so they slide easier.

Some day I'll make a thread on how to service these tubes and fittings.

Cool Dave! But it is about $200 more than I paid to silver solder on the AN fittings on my stock assembly of my 88.

Some details on assorted Ford quick-connect fuel line ends. The 84-86 versions that the SVO uses is on the left in the three pics. That one is a 5/16" hose to 5/16" hard line. The middle item is the fuel return end. It is a 5/16" tube to 1/4 metal quick-connect. The one on the far right in the pics is the newer duckbill fitting in 5/16-5/16. It DOES NOT properly fit the SVO fuel rail - it doesn't go on far enough to securely engage the retaining clips. It does fit the fuel filters though (the crimp is tighter).

Assembling the ends onto fresh tube using the proper tools - at room temp. I have tried the "hot water" method with about a 15% success rate; with the proper tools my success rate is 100%. This particular tool is a few hundred dollars and has assorted sizes of collets (1/4", 5/16", 3/8") to grip the tune and different end holders.

Completed tube, end fitting, retaining clip & back-up zip tie (I always use a small tie wrap to reinforce the retaining clip on the pressure lines. Lime green in this case).

While you're doing fuel tank related servicing, replace the tank vent/roll-over valve and grommet. Pics and part numbers:

The vent valve fits into the upper, right of the fuel tank and the outlet connects to the 1/8" nylon tube that runs forward to the charcoal canister that lives in the right front frame rail/wheel well area.

Great info as usual. Do you have the tool to install the fittings? If so I would be very willing to pay you (parts & labor) to make a complete new tank to pump line.

I looked for the Dorman repair parts with the 18" line but they don't show a 5/16" connector with 5/16" line for the SVO, only the 3/8" connector with 5/16" line. That is for the later FOX cars right?

NAPA has the 5/16 connector with 5/16" line but it is listed for 2.3 ranger. It has the later style end connector with the push to release retainer clip. I don't see why this shouldn't work, guess I'll find out

Got the new line shown above in today along with the Dorman union. All is well! That push on union sure makes for an easier fix than the old barbed splice.

Well looks like I still have a leak issue. Seems the 5/16" metal outlet tube on the pump hangar is pitted and can't get a good seal to the line push on connector. I have been looking for a new hangar.
NPD has this one but its 5/16 shown for later cars. Would this one work? Inputs appreciated

The pic looks right and the description reads "5/16 outlet". The return fitting is a 1/4. That comes with a new pump, btw.

Are you handy with soldering? You could probably repair the pitted one.
