What happens when a wideband sensor goes bad? Do they show signs before or are they just gone? I wired up mine and took power from a spare fuse spot on my fuse panel. Then when I connected the battery it was on for quite a while before I realized it. Now my readings jump all over the place. I had it grounded to the steering column then moved it to the ECU ground, no change. Now I am pulling power off a jumper from the turn signal fuse and it seams really solid (and switched) but my readings still jump, any ideas? It is working enough to tune the car but the gauge just drives me nuts.

What wideband is it?

Typically they just go from working normal to readings being way off while the engine feels like it's running the same. It's impossible for the sensor to work "some of the time" so if your problem is sporadic, it's not the sensor itself. It's either wiring, the gauge, or the engine is doing what the sensor says it's doing (being jumpy).
