My bearing retainer is scored. Can I use the same typical replacement retainer sold at most mustang parts suppliers? Was not sure if there is only size.

Depends on which gearbox you have. it's the 85+ SVO gearbox, a WC-model (3.5:1 first) , then yes. If it's the early pre-WC 84 4.0x first gear version, no.

Per the serial number & year stamp on the casting, it's an '86.

I think you need FMS-M-7050-A, and that is the right one on LMR. Summit has them too for more money. That is what I put into my 85.5 SVO this past winter.

Per the serial number & year stamp on the casting, it's an '86. Then you have the REP-AG gearbox and the 5.0L WC bearing retainer will fit.
