You didn't like the SVO front end or is this a sleeper look? Looks like an awful lot of work. Glad it will be on the road.

Wait till you wreck the front of your SVO and see how much it cost to replace parts ;)
This car is better off being a sleeper/daily beater, and it if gets hurt, I have another couple of bumper covers and damaged hoods I can put together to get it back on the road again, for a lot cheaper than it would to replace the SVO parts.

This is the direction i have been wanting to go with on my car, it looks great! Anything too tough about the front end swap other than the obvious work that went into the hood?
Lonnie it's really not rocket science, but understand the SVO front end pioneered the 87'-93' front ends so everything that was typical 1979 to 86' has to be replaced cause the front end will be shorter, hence why the bumper impact absorbers have to be replaced is the big one.
Which ever front end you use, you will need that hood (1979-82' and 1983 to 86') if you go with an early front end, be it known the cowl is narrower than it is on the 83-86 cars.
Also the SVO fenders were designed to use the wrap around bumper cover and 16" wheels, I am running a 16" and don't have any rubbing, but I have heard of cases, so just be aware.
This SVO already had a relays in the head lamp wiring (PO added them) and you will need all the pig tails from the four eye front end.
If you run a front mount intercooler or a liquid to air intercooler then you won't have to do the extensive hood work (about a days worth of work).
And body side moulding and rear bumper cover, granted and 1980 Cobra would be wicked by all accounts and the bumper cover would work fine.
If you go the route of 1985-86 like I did the body moulding is different, since all the black parts I have came from an 86' GT T-top with a broken back, I was able to retrieve the "GT" quarter moulding and rear bumper cover, I still need the door moulding and the rear quarter trim, as you can tell.

"Wait till you wreck the front of your SVO and see how much it cost to replace parts" ;)
Thankfully all I needed for my car was the inner/outer marker lights and they cost a bunch of $$ even for used /repo. I have looked for bumper covers just to see if there are any out there and never found one. Guess the aftermarket doesn't think there is enough of a market to reproduce but that my change as restoration of all Fox bodies is growing. Cervins should consider making them, or NPD
Dave, the aftermarket did make a bumper cover, it was a round for 2 or 3 years and then disappeared as the demand wasn't really there, same with the front lights, they were made too, and now due to lack of sales, the production was stopped and surplus is dwindling down (RH corner lamps were not reproduced due to broken/lost tooling).
I do have an original reconditioned bumper cover, that I bought from Cali and had shipped here, unless someone really needs one, I probably will never get my $$$ out of it, so it sits in the attic.
LOL, Bob :)

I'm doing the same conversion. A previous owner wrecked the car and replaced the front clip with an '88 GT, so it was already jacked.

I prefer the four-eye look, so I got an '86 front clip and hood for $40.

Iirc those SVO repro parts were made in an initial quantity of about 400. And it took several years for them to sell, taking up precious warehouse space the whole time.
The folks that have the rights (and tooling) to make these parts are accustomed to selling 50,000+ of each item a year. Naturally they have absolutely no interest in making SVO parts - to them it was a very bad business decision to make SVO parts in the first place.

^^^ That wouldn't look too bad if it were an lx bumper instead of a gt...

Do you recall who was making them? Might be something to pass along to NPD. I talk to them every so often and they were looking for more early items to add. Their latest catalog has more and more early year parts 79-86 (unlike Late Model & Fox Resto) I got a set of nos rear brake hoses for my 84 and also for my 93 Cobra from them.

Daniel Carpenter. Last I heard is that he was done with SVO parts cause they took years to sell.
Mike is correct, that's who was doing the lights, the bumper covers were a different company.

I heard they were licensed through Carpenter using Ford tooling, which he owns now.

I dig that paint job, I've been playing with ideas very close to that look.

I wonder if they would part with the tooling at a reasonable cost.

Thanks. It was painted like that when I bought it, but I am thinking about something similar when I repaint it. I just wan't to get the '86 front-end on before I decide for sure.

Wow, that was some healthy progress.
Well I thought I was going to have it whipped out in a day, so I started at 7am, it was nice a cool, gentle breeze, then came the broken bolt in the head, another that was slow going (thought it was going to break also) and the sun came out, and beamed down on me like an ant under a microscope.
My wife did her best to keep me hydrated, but as you noticed, since the 79' Ghia was taking residence in the garage I had to do this in the driveway, which meant I couldn't work on it in the A/C :(
The total set back on the broken bolt was probably about 30-45min, and another 15 to get the other bolt out that was acting all hairy.
While cleaning all the oily parts that were on the car, is when I stripped the paint off the other head, and another time consuming factor was disassembling the two heads and swapping cam shafts over, and replacing the cam seal.
As you will also see, I had picked up another A/C compressor, high and low side lines so now I can have A/C, the other compressor is good, just the PO had switched it to serpentine belt, and the comp was still V-belt.
Maybe if the heat doesn't smoke me at work today, when I get home I'll install the fan, high and low side lines, the intercooler, change the oil, and fire it off.

Nice work! Just curious, shouldn't that a/c belt be running off of the crank pulley also instead of just the water pump pulley?
Lonnie, that would be correct if it was an 87' - up 2.3 Turdstang, which is where the PO got the PWR Steering, Crank pullies and accy bracket from, along with a trashed A/C compressor.
But a few weeks ago I was at the Salvage yard and snapped up this HR980 compressor, bracket, hoses/drier, and hardware from an 88' Turbo Coupe for $45, what I didn't get was the correct crank pulley, due to fund-age.
The donor:

I would have preferred, the 87' - up Turdstang compressor and bracket but it was not available.
The correct set up looks like this in my other turbo car:

Pretty cool stuff.
Are you assuming there wasn't also some cussin in HIS garage??
Cussing, well that day when the bolt broke only had a word or three spoken, YESTERDAY was another story.
This car just doesn't like me, let's begin:
(Sorry no pictures this time around, Mitch you might ought to ban me for this error)
I got up at 4am to have my coffee check my emails and wake up a bit, as you know it's been an average of 102 - 105 degrees here in central Texas, so getting up early and getting outside before the evil sun comes out is a must, since, like before my other turbo car is on jack stands in the garage and I have to work on the SVO in the driveway.
Friday I went to go pick-up a bump stick to shove in the SVO, no biggie a fairly simple job, shouldn't take but a few hours.
Got down to removing the screws in the back of the cam tower to release the cam retention plate and the #3 Phillips bit dropped down the oil return hole into the oil pan *rolls eyes*
Ok, so jack the car up drain the oil, grab an extendable magnet and a coat hanger and 20min later I had fished it out, ok back to work.
Go to install the followers and the number 4 exhaust valve, half the keeper popped out, so I pulled the plug and pressurized the cylinder and replaced the keeper, noting that there sure was quite a bit of burn oil build up on the electrode, Hmmmmmmm.
Pulled the rest of the plugs, they looked good so I set them over in the blasting cabinet for not, and went back to finishing what I started.
Ok got everything done, cleaned the plugs, installed them and the intercooler, fired off the car , runs and idlles fine, set timing to 10* we're all good, and like most times to do some heavy engine disassembly you get a little smoke from oily fingers prints burning of here and there, that's normal, BUT...............
BUT, I have quite a bit of smoke emanating from the exhaust, which takes us back to the head gasket replacement, the guy who gave me the head, asked me just minuets from having the engine all put back together (^^the pictures you looked at earlier^^) and asked me if I replaced the valve stem seals, and I was like "No, should I have?" he was like "well, I'm not sure", I asked if he knew something that the PO had been having issues with them, again he wasn't sure, ok fine, I'm too far in this to worry now, so for the previous week or so I have been driving it daily with no smoking issues.
So now I'm figuring that I really just agitated 1 or more of some old valve stem seals, and so for my next magic trick (next weekend), I will go back, and replace all the valve stem seals with the head on the car.
Till then I'll just drive my old Shop Truck:

So much fun & excitement going on there in Bastrop. I'm going to have to stop in & ban you in person if I can make it out to the V8super cars or the F1 race next year.
Your welcome to stay here if you'd like since the hotels accommodations will be booked if you haven't made reservations yet, let alone the 4x price increase for hotel cost on that event alone.
;)
I'll have you some cool beers waiting when you arrive.

as you know it's been an average of 102 - 105 degrees here in central Texas, Sounds like a mild summer day to me. Get one of those car show tents then you can work in cool shade.
On a side note the A/C blows snowballs Kinda like hail? Does that hurt?
Saturday's up and coming morning project:

DO NOT install those seals. Not suitable for a turbo engine. Those are the design that was obsoleted 25 (the black ones) and 23 (the blue ones) years back. The black design is what was used on engines in 1984 and 1985, the blue design was the updated version that first came on the 1985 Tempo. The design shown below was used across the board from 1987 and onwards.
Only use these kind (metal body, round spring at top):
5051
This particular one is from Esslinger and uses same on intake and exhaust side. Ford makes two different ones (black and brown) with different clearance levels for int/exh) and the exh is a higher temp material; both use similar design with metal outer shell and round spring at top like this pic.
I have several sets of NOS Ford seals if you need some.
Well damn :( I couldn't get as so lucky for my Ford dealer to have any here, let me see if I can pull a set from my parts supplier, at least I know they will jump trough some hoops for me.
Thanks for the heads up Mike.
I guess if I can't get this project off the ground for tomorrow morning, I'll switch and work on the Ghia.
Again, Thanks!

If I had seen the reply before I left the house today, I coulda o/nighted them to you. Sorry.
Let me know over the weekend if your suppliers get you handled. Can ship on Monday, if needed.
Well I was able to have my parts supplier get me these Felpro seals and have them delivered to me, Ford was going to take about 7 working days to get them ( ) strange.
So any ways I'll use these while the other head is going to get ported and machined for big valves, hopefully these should last long enough for all that to get done.
Mike I want to thank you again for the gracious offer to ON those to me, if this was something a little more worthy of it I would have stepped to the plate, but really this is just a daily beater, yes I hate to have to pull this down once again, but you know, isn't that why we have these &&#)@@(&$(&^%$(&#%^(# cars to begin with? LOL

I see you got the Fluke Duke. Cool toy, crappy song.
Yeah Peter, is a pretty cool scopemeter, and your right the song is kinda lacking, maybe if Pat was on the drums it would help.
On a serious note, your right it is a very cool tool, it really goes way beyond the average mutimeter, and as you can see, someone who is not familiar with using a oscilloscope or a piece of diagnostic equipment like this, the tool will walk you through with menus on how to set it up, which input to use, whether it wants a trigger or not, I could go on and on and on about it, it just takes a lot of the guess work out of the equation, both in tool set-up and problem solving on the vehicle.
It is a little on the old technology side (like me) but it is still a very useable tool even on today's cars , you can find them on Evil Bay for $800 to $1700 pending on what peripheral's they have for it, and www.aeswave.com (http://www.aeswave.com) has a lot of the replacement parts for it, and software upgrades.
http://img0102.popscreencdn.com/158066025_fluke-98-series-ii-scopemeter-very-good-condition.jpg
Here is another great example of using the Scopemeter, in and not including the automotive field, here this guy is checking back up power systems with it, and he has taken great pictures of the screen to show you wave patterns he getting.

A very versatile and powerful tool!!!

Blasphemy. That was brilliant.
I have a Fluke 123 scopemeter which is generally overkill for the way I use it. But occasionally, it's fun to monitor the coil and see the MSD doing what it claims.

I have one of these in the shop for when I might need to view analog stuff that moves. Also most useful for all that slow CAN BUS data traffic.

With enough knobs, dials, switches, & levers to satisfy Dr. Who, Dr. Frankenstein and me all at the same time!

Got it from work, surplused, with cart, printer, cables, software, and GOBS of leads, full manuals, etc.
Unfortunately it's not battery powered and I've not found the "Boost" input fitting yet.

Looking at the thing in the shop just now, I recall that I upgraded the 2230 to a 2430 digital model. Fewer buttons/knobs/switches/levers and all those same functions are now controlled by the digital computer inside the box. Some days I prefer the manual analog controls cause that's what I learned to use many decades ago.
5238
5239
5244
What I think you're referring to as a filter is a part of the lead itself where it attaches to the scope inputs. It's a part of the lead assembly and these particular ones are a 10M Ohm, 13.5pF load with a 10X lead assembly. The days of just connecting a cable with a BNC on one end are long gone.

Geek hijacking may be the worst kind. Here' my 123.
5245
I used to work for these guys (http://mpd.southwestmicrowave.com/) making high frequency connectors. At that tiime, some of the stuff was rated as high as 50GHz. I only am a mechanical engineer but the EE guys explained to me that microwave is tricky because the wavelength is approaching the same physical dimensions as the conductors and circuitry. This resulted in pretty tight tolerance of the machined components (+/-.0003") to avoid VSWRs which would create noise and loss of power. My understanding is this is a prime reason why modern PCs stopped trying to increase clock speed and went to multi-core parallel processing to increase

Yeah microwave connectors are sensitive & highly susceptible to BER. I'm sure Bob could go on for days on this subject. A poorly built cable, incorrect type of connector or the wrong type of cable can really screw up your week.

How did a picture of my engine bay get in this thread? I bought it from Summit but you can get them at your local speed shop for less I found out after the fact. Stinger has a write-up on the install with part numbers on his site. Its also on TF. By the way I took a scotch bright pad to it to make it look like a brushed finish the tubing its made of looks like he--. I used the AC mount with a custom made off set spacer for a mount and it just clears the frame rail. Now back to your thread!

Who wouldn't be smitten by Flat Bob? Last time we chatted, Fred wasn't too fond of Flat Bob. I recall hm saying "What do you get when you mix Flat Bob with a Fat Tire?"
He never told me that the result would be though.
Well we keep making some forward progress here, but this won't be the last time we see this SVO on jack stands, seems to be all too comon

So after driving it on the streets back and forth to work, and some other running around here and there, making sure we weren't puking huge amounts of oil everywhere.
I took it to our local track to do some data gathering/logging, and see how everything worked on the track.
This is by far the best way to do some serious evaluations.

That Ford emblem is in GREAT shape considering the condition of the hood! ;)
::m::
Ridiculous how heavy that hood is, damn near offsets the weight reduction of the 4 popper in there.

Your looking at a digital picture, it's not all that and a box of Cracker Jacks.
And that is the hood that came on the car when I brought it home.

If you're a hack, then I'm a... a... JiffyLube customer?
Anyway, here's a pic of the bottom... This bottom?

No, actually I ment the underside of your hood, I want to see what they did about the support work under it.

Ah... They did nothing. It's an SVO hood reshaped with Bondo and a trimmed front apron. It's quite the hack job.
I'll be driving to Houston in June, maybe I can bring it with me and trade you for one of your 4-Eye hoods?! ;)
::m::
Well that sucks they didn't go the full 9 yards on it.
What part of Houston are you headed to, I could stop by and we have lunch or something, I'll drive the beater.
I have some race car parts waiting on me that I need to pick up anyways.
BTW, this hood still needs a lot of body work before it can be fully painted.

The car has a salvaged title, and the damage behind the front end wasn't repaired with much precision and care either. My plan is to fix and smooth all that when I do the 4-eye transplant.
There are "parts" of Houston? I'll ask and let you know when all the plans are made.
I like that sound... Although my '86 2.5" Y-pipe doesn't sound like that, so I was planning on changing to a 3" single. ;-)

Ugh I'll never have time to get more work done on this thing with more junk following me home

Your absolutely right, the siblings will go to fists.
So we went back out to our track to watch some racing they had going on, and in between the enduro's club members could you the track as they saw fit, so i once again went out to do a few shake down laps to see if we have stopped the oil purging.
Most of it is gone, now I need to add an o-ring to the dip stick, as I got a little oil out of it after a few spirited laps around the track.
Remember I drive this every day so beating the everliving snot out of it is not the quest, plus the wrong size 225-55-16's Falkin ZE512's are old and hard, and just plain suck!
So here are a few laps for you, sorry about the camera angle, next time I'll set it a little lower so you can see straight ahead, but you get the idea.
At full song Spec Miata's lap this track at 1:35, this "Spirited" drive netted a 1:42
