Ok, so the car is stored ~200 miles away so it's not easy to get anything done in a hurry. So with that said, I had a weekend with the car. Started on the engine bay:

This is off a 93 4cyl N/A. The donor engine used DIS, but I got rid of the DIS rings off the back of the crank pulley assembly.

I spent some time tonight cleaning up the brackets and such. Need to get back to the JY and grab the AC compressor and condenser. Stay tuned for more updates.....

I know you can haul a lot of stuff in a fox body hatchback but I didnt think you could get most of the car in there:).

Good thing I have another car as a reference point - haha. In reality I've pulled enough of these fox body cars apart that most of it is pretty straight forward. But there's always something that stumps me.....

Spent some more quality time on the 9L. First up, the pulley from the "new" alternator needed to be swapped to an older one that I had in my inventory:

Thanks to DZNJ for access to an air impact. The right tools make all the difference....

Threw a new water pump and thermostat on the engine, set the engine for the timing belt (installed a roll pin into the tensioner), stabbed the distributor in, and bolted on the new serpentine belt accessories. Also hooked up all the coolant lines, installed a new pat-in-la oil feed to the turbo, and installed the AC condenser. What else.... Hmmm, Turbo was loose at the manifold, tightened that, wired up the starter relay and battery cables, dip stick tube, various electrical connections repaired, new valve cover gasket, coolant fan. That's pretty much where I'm at. Here are the current pics:

So the engine is 90-95% back together. Need to get the AC compressor clutch swapped, old one is fubar'd, I'll get a picture of that (brought it back home with me).
Also spent some time on the body, got the front and rear bumper covers on and the tail lights re-installed. Started on the interior, but ran out of time.....

First thing I did was pull the dash, allowed me to re-assemble the heater/AC ducting behind the dash and repair some wiring issues.

Foxbuddy, once you've taken a fox body dash out the first time it gets a lot easier. I have had it out of my '88 DD three times now and replaced the heater cores in two other ones for friends. I am down to about 6 hours out and back in.

Not perfect, but much better than what I started with.... Thinking about spraying them with urethane clear coat. Still up in the air about that step. If anyone has done this, let me know if you are happy with the results.

Another project was the AC compressor. The donor car's AC system (93 vert 4cyl n/a) was fully intact when I removed it (still had a charge), but the compressor's clutch was shot:

One of the reasons it took so long is that I was missing these clips. Come to find out that late 80's / early 90's Escort GT / EXP's use "similar "clips, but only 1 per side. So I was able to find the needle in a hay stack Sat when I visited the u-pull-it....

Good news is that I'm starting to run out of parts to throw on this car. Bad news is that I pulled the turbo:

Reason is that I want to remove the aftermarket 3" DP, which uses a funky adapter plate with hex fasteners:

Problem is that I can't get the 6MM hex bolts out. Tried with an Allen key & vice grips and it won't budge, even with some mild heat. So I'm going out tomorrow and get something in socket form that I can use a ratchet / impact.

Most hardware stores and even Sears will have those allen hex thingies in 3/8" socket form. Once you get a good fitting hex in those screw heads, soak the threads in your favorite pemetrator, apply some mild heat (heat to 0-500 F max - there will be no color change at that temp) and slowly increase the torque to loosen them with a long breaker bar. Slow rotation is the key to loosening them.

Flat Bob's favorite stuck bolt loosening method is to heat the part enough to melt candle wax on them - it will wick in like solder. Let the wax cool enough to harden, then slowly break them loose.

I've heard about the wax thing but never tried it. One of these day I'll have to give it a shot. Tried the 50/50 acetone/PS fluid and seems to work pretty well.

^^^ thanks for the tip. I've been using an acetylene torch so far, but I don't think it's getting it hot enough. Looks like Lowes sells the MAP style torch.

Plus I only sprayed WD-40. Need to soak with PB Blaster.....

I did get the correct 3/8" drive 6mm hex socket today.

You should be able to get it hot enough with the torch. I've seen many hot sides with burn marks from a torch. Dont be afraid to make it hot, just not hot enough to melt it.

Thanks Chalky. The AC line goes over the top of the compressor housing. I'll get a better picture later tonight now that I've got the turbo back on the car as well as the compressor bolted to the mounting bracket.

It needed a bit of "persuasion" to get the clearance necessary to bolt it up to the compressor. I'm going to "go with it" for now and see how it goes. I might put a heat sock on the hose just because....

I agree with Mike, go to Home Depot or Lowes or whatever home improvement place and get a length of the foam insulation for pipes.
It is split so you can put it on easily and it has adhesive to keep it together, but I ensure it staying by using wire ties.

IDK, I just assume if the header wrap is good enough to keep heat inside an exhaust pipe, it will work equally as well to keep the heat away from the AC line that's wrapped up....

It should be obvious how this bearing would not spin freely and would have a serious negative effect on exhaust gas flow rotation, especially in turbocharged engines. The accoustical effect of stopping (or even slowing) the rotation can have a major impact on the ability of the turbine wheel to spin up properly, resulting in less boost response and less power.

Remember that the stock T3 used on our engines spins at 20,000 RPM at idle so anything that is allowed to reduce exhaust gas rotation is bad.

After the exhaust was done, I topped off the all the fluids and attempted first start up. Won't start via the key. Fuel pump primed Ok. So I moved to jump the solenoid. After a few tries and a twist or 2 of the distributor, we have a runner again:

Smoke is just junk burning off the exhaust manifold. I let it run for a bit, took it for a spin around the block then set the base timing to 10 degrees.

Bunch of small stuff to finish off, but I've reach a major milestone on this project.....

Spent some time on more odds and ends today. Figured out the no-key-start issue, never hooked up the connector to the clutch safety switch - DOH!

It's funny - I've never met an engine I could get running be it 1 or 8cyl! Mark P.S. Wait take that back - help a friend once whose niece had a 1970 Opal that ONLY RAN ON STARTING FLUID ! (Not due to carb/fuel problems.......turned out there were no rings left in the motor and the only cylinder with compression had valve guide issues!

Center section is back up with me in MA. Going to replace the carrier bearings and get new axle seals while up here.

The right side carrier bearing had a decent amount of play. And the rear cover had some black smootz in and around where the same bearing is located. So that's why I decided to replace these bearings. The pinion "feels" normal to me.

I also noticed that the vibration dampner is missing. Anyone ever run without one and are there any ill effects to doing so? I have a spare 8.8 rear in my basement that I can get another dampner from, worth it to replace the one on the SVO? Thoughts???

Use a real press and clamp. I seriously doubt you can get enough force to do the diff bearings with a 2- or 3-jaw puller.

Something like this to grab the bearing (should be sized to the bearing):

and support it (the grabber thingie with some strong steel pates and push it off/on with this:

If you apply a small amount of heat to the bearing it should make it budge, even just a small propane torch may do it.

The pucks are used to press the bearings on the carrier using only the inner race. And provide enough clearance to press the bearing all the way down (the carrier extends out past the bearing just a bit)

Latest update:

Rear end went together with not much drama. Had to install the center section 3 or 4 times until I got the shims right and the backlash to an acceptable fit. Vibration is gone, but the rear is still making noise, so it looks like I'm going to have to install axle saver style bearing. I should have done it all at the same time, but I don't have my own wheel bearing puller, yet. On the shopping list now.

So the rest of the story, sanded and painted the front bumper trim as well as the quarter window trim.

Ok, here's a problem I've been trying to fix on this car. You guys know that with a stock rear end gear, this just quite ain't right:

I knew this was an issue from my test ride last weekend. So I loaded a speedometer app into my I phone and was able to verify that the speedo was off by ~25 MPH!

I double checked the speedo gear in the trans before heading to Carlisle, it was the same as the one in my black 86 (it's good to have a reference!!!).

So after consulting with the brain power at Carlisle, it was determined that the needle was put back in the wrong position (probably done when the PO put the white face gauge overlays on):

Another project checked off the list. Converted the AC system to R-134a. Had a few issues (some self caused), but finally got the system charged and blowing cold air. In the process, I found that the tensioner on the main belt was fubar, luckily I was able to get a used one at a local JY:

Ted - the car didn't have any accessories on the front of the engine when I bought it. So when I looked in the local yard, there was. 93 4cyl car complete. So I grabbed everything including the AC.

Now you only need some hot weather to test it in!!

Already have the Pace Car on the insurance policy, just need to transfer the plates from the white SVO. So I'm planning on taking the PC to Carlisle next summer. Funny thing is that I bought the PC back in the fall of 1989, so it's been 25 years (with the last 12 or so in storage).

GREAT save Joe!! Went back to page 1 and it's amazing how much you did. I'm sure the new owner will be very happy and I hope I get to see the car some day.

The Pace Car looks great and it's neat you've owned it so long and are getting it back on the road. It looks so good I was worried you wouldn't have anything to do, until you mentioned the 82 GT. Wouldn't be the same without Jturbo project updates! :)
