View Full Version : Quad shocks with aftermarket control arms

I am in the process of swapping my 7.5 with an 8.8. I thought I read somewhere that when using stronger than stock rear control arms, it's recommended not to use the quad shocks. Anyone else heard this?

I have Max Motorsports control arms with the quad shocks with no issues. Car handles quite well. The only reason I know of to remove the quads is to allow for wider rear wheels/tires.

After going to high quality control arms I ditched the quads and never noticed them being gone.

Thanks! Sounds like it's 50/50 on using them. My koni's don't look bad or leaking so I'll throw them on.

The quad shocks are supposed to prevent axle wind up. not sure how going with "high quality" changes that. the only way you should really take them off is if you go to a different rear suspension geometry.

Mine has been this way to 4 years and I don't have any problems with wheel hop. If the bushings and arms are stiff enoough then they do the job without the quads.

Maximum Motorsports web site says you can remove the quad shocks when using their lower control arms.

I was talking to Maximum Motorsports about this exact topic yesterday. I have an SN95 axle assembly I planned on putting into our '84 Capri Turbo RS as part of a five lug conversion. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying close attention when I bought this axle. The quad shock brackets have been cut off and small tabs welded on for what appears to be a drag race anti-roll bar similar to Team Z, Baseline, Wolfe, etc.
According to the guy I spoke with, he recommended trying the axle as-is without the quad shocks and see how it behaves. If there's axle hop, then I should add brackets and attach quad shocks. Otherwise, I can leave them off. He stated that when everything changes in the combo (tires, mass, vehicle weight, springs, dampeners, control arms, bushings, etc.), there is no way to know if axle hop will be an issue.
