View Full Version : Turbo: so on the way to work this morning...

So last night I drive a 40 mile round trip into the foothills to get some photos with the mountains and the sunset in the background. No issues at all. Nothing unexpected.
This morning I decided to take it to work today as well. I'm no granny driver and the roads in the industrial area to work are pretty quiet at 5:00 am. The issue I had was while under hard acceleration while what seemed like max, or close to max boost/ acceleration... The boost died off! After driving a little more to test it out, it seemed at sustained acceleration/high boost there was a boost relief. A mechanism, over boost protection, waste gate that is maybe jumping the gun? I had the car in premium when this happened. Due to traffic on the way home I could do no further on the road testing. But no problems in regular mode?
Excuse the probably poor terminology. Any suggestions?
BTW I'm a visual learner so if you have any pictures or diagrams to help, please do (cuz they're out of stock on the tech manuals and I can't look myself:stick_poke:).

more than likely its a boost leak. Do you have the stock IC setup? One of my original couplers would bleed off and make a hissing sound.

Yes, the stock set up. That is kind of what it sounds like. Reaches about 12 psi boost and then relieves a bit, builds again and kind of sounds like the hissing you speak of in a way. Weird it just happened suddenly so that is why I didnt expect that. I do have some new intercooler hoses as I am planning on ditching the IC bracket soon. I will check the clamps on the hoses first I suppose. I almost thought it would be something more complicated such as a malfunctioning wastegate or boost control.

This morning on the way to work the same thing happened. Doesnt happen in Unleaded mode, just Premium. Maybe as brownsvo stated; when approaching that "critical" level maybe there is a leak in an obvious spot such as the IC hoses. I will check the clamps this evening.

I know my thing isn't exactly what you're experiencing, but it would lead me to believe that Brown is correct. While I was driving out of a round about, I did a hard acceleration and blew off my intercooler and it drove a lot harder obviously. I could see that a small leak would easily reduce power and bag on the acceleration though. I would check all the hoses, tighten/replace any clamps...remove any possibly oil on the hoses that could cause it to slip, check for cracks

wherever the weak spot is may bleed off boost at 9psi, 12 psi, etc.. there is no magic number just the amount of boost that causes that weak spot to flex and bleed.
Remove the Intercooler bracket as they can rattle when you switch to the thicker intercooler hoses and clamps.
I went thru this because i used the stackable hoses from auto zone and it would always bleed boost at the intercooler regardless of the silicone or how much i clamped it down. it wouldnt run more than 10psi either..but thats because of my la3 switch.

Well lo and behold! There was a clamp that was loose! Tightened and tested and sooo much better! :fasttruck: This place is so full of great advice :3stooges: I am glad I joined!
I'm glad it wasn't anything more extreme to fix.
Does anyone have a picture or can they describe what the factory clamps and hoses looked like?

Factory hoses where black thin and had a orange red inside. They rip easily after 20+ years of taking them on and off.

I put new hoses on a month or so ago and put my I/C brackets back on.
When I removed the hose from the turbo it was almost sliced thru. I'm guessing from engine vibrations over the last probably six or seven years. And yes I use heavy duty hose and heavy duty clamps.
I haven't heard any noise from the brackets yet and I don't have a loud exhaust.
What makes them rattle anyway??? The nub where they fit into the hole???

I'm still having some small issues with it. I am going to save looking into it until next year. That should build some suspense! I have some aftermarket hoses and clamps to go on then.
Interesting that dagenham reinstalled his bracket as I am planning to remove mine when I change out the hoses. Mine is vibrating too. It is coming from the rivet?, dowel or pin in the pictures. It was recommended that removing the bracket is okay.

Take the brackets off - they're just in the way.
I took the brackets off my new 84 at less than 1000 miles - just installed thicker hoses. ~170K miles later, no issues (in that area!).

Where to get intercooler hoses now? Nothing at LMR, etc, NAPA has a blue turbo to intercooler, but no intercooler outlet hose.

Straight pieces of reinforced silicone (or radiator) hose in 2.0 " (turbo-to-IC) and 2.5" (IC-to-TB). 2.5" long for each, trim as needed.

Someone else said IC to TB was 2 1/4". Is there a difference '84-'86?
