Valve Stem Seal Recommendations

Hi - Looking to replace valve stem seals next weekend. Anyone recommend a particular set and/or vendor? Rock Auto has several types available. Any other source? I believe Bo Port has some as well but not sure if they are meant for stock engine set up.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for pointing me to your post. I totally missed your post when I did a search for "valve stem seals". Will order the recommended seal set, http://store.esslingeracing.com/cart/viton_valve_seals-details.aspx , from Esslinger today. Also pictures will really help me out. I've read that replacing the seals on cylinder #4 is a bit more challenging due to space. Did you find that challenge as well?

Although OEM valve stem seals are "obsolete" you can still find them. At the Ford dealership I work at we did not have them, but the parts department has access to other dealerships availability by simply plugging in part numbers. I found my valve seals available at a small dealership that had them still in stock from years ago. Many times with new old stock from dealers I have gotten the parts discounted and shipped to my door from the dealer as well. It's worth a shot. INTAKE E7ZZ-6571-A EXHAUST E7ZZ-6571-B

For posterity sake as it seems these have been discontinued by Ford. Iirc I've seen aftermarket gasket kits that come with those seals though. Esslinger has a similar seal in blue, using same for intake and exhaust sides.

What is the valve stem size on a svo? I wonder if we mind find some from a different application. Would it have to be from a turbo engine or would a n/a engine seal work?

11/32" You will need something that can handle the excessive temps on the exhaust side and the higher intake pressures on the intake.

Remember that valve stem seals do the exact opposite of what we want them to do (kinda like a clutch-type differential). With a new engine (new guides and valves) we want oil to get into the guide/stem area to help with initial run-in (break-in to some) and keep stuff well lubed in the process. After the parts are properly seated to each other, it can tolerate less oil so then we want the seal to stop allowing as much oil through. New seals seal better than old seals, so it's backwards. Not a problem on an already-run-in engine though.

In the old days we'd leave the seals off on fresh builds just for this very reason, then install them after the engine (head) has a few hours on it. Naturally this adds to labor & maintenance costs.
