I know it's hard to diagnosis noises online but ever since I bought my 84 w/ 7x,000 miles, when ever I back up I have a 'clunking' noise coming from the rear. Pretty sure it's not a good thing :D but other than that, it's never given me a problem. Ideas?

As I get time this will eventually end up in the 'Projects' area, with pictures attached. ;)

Change the rear end fluid and be sure to add the friction modifier. That should fix it.

Thanks Kevin, I jumped right to major repairs before thinking about the simple stuff. I'm planning on changing all the fluids anyhow. Is there a recommended/preferred fluid? I know at one time Royal Purple was all the rage.

Yup. Royal Purple is still my choice of gear oil. It has the friction modifier already in it. I changed mine this past Summrer.

I would have replaced the u-joints first to see if that was the problem

X2 on the u joints. Also how is the rear in when driving? Any whines or rumbles especially when you lift off the gas? If its quiet then just change the fluid. Also if its and early car it has the alburn type carrier so the friction modifier doesn't really add anything.

The clunking is your rear brake calipers. Make sure the locating bushing and spring clip is sorted.

Pretty sure the noise is coming from the rear, not the U joint as I only hear it when backing up but I'll double check when I get under the car to look things over. I replaced the rear calipers correctly :cool: and I've heard caliper/pad noise before and it's not the same but will look over that area too.

First order of business will be to replace the old oil since I -know- that should be done! ;)
