Some snow again tomorrow and Sunday.

Well pretty much all of that first blast last weekend melted during the week and while we didn't get as much as predicted this weekend, we got another four inches or so (and it looks like the previous picture again). The highway north of the city is closed due to high winds and drifting right now (they must be erring on the side of caution because people forget how to drive in winter).

I talked to my dad this morning. They live about 90 miles north and west, closer to the foothills and they got over a foot and it was still coming down!

Not quite like Arizona!

Just wondering how terrible are these cars in the snow

MikeFleming
11-05-2013, 09:47 PM
^
Tyres are more important than the vehicle in snow/ice. The SVO is very light in the rear but the power comes on much slower than a v-ate car would so it's easier to control in limited traction conditions. Imho.

Typically not the car's fault for not being good in snow. Tires as Mike mentioned are very important. It's amazing here when we can have winter driving for six to eight months that people cannot drive for the road conditions. Everyone is in a hurry, speed, not leave enough room to stop etc. Every year they need to retrain themselves!

This is in Celcius too! If you were to convert it would still be really cold! Notice the "feels like" note for wind chill? At least Wednesday, there is to be little to no wind.

Good thing we didn't get more snow. Here is a pic of my truck after being parked all day.

This was one of those blizzards to remember. City half paralyzed with drifting from 30+ MPH winds, highways closed all around, cars stuck all over the place. The wind is to die today and the sun come out. -20C and no wind isnt that bad when youre dressed for it.

We actually had a decent Christmas week of slightly above normal temps. Capped off with +10*C (50*F) yesterday- it was a real beauty!

Last night, they had a "fast freeze" warning as a cold front was going to come through. I'd seen many other type of warnings before, not this. The wind picked up to northerly gusts over 30 mph, some freezing rain on the leading edge that turned into a couple inches of drifted snow and the temperature dropping to -18*C (0F) overnight!

Pretty crazy temperature swing for ~6 hours!

I used to travel for an employer years ago. Where ever I went, I was offered a job. I remember seeing a documentary about scientists in Antarctica that play soccer bare chested in the "summer" down there when it is still slightly below freezing. When you're climatized to the cold, a slight warm up feels like summer I guess!

We had more snow again last night. If it keeps up like this, we'll be setting more records! The picture doesn't do it justice. The snow in my yard is close to 16" deep right there.

In Southern Alberta we get a weather phenomenon called a Chinook (named after the westerly wind). When the weather pattern is right, warm air comes over the mountains from the Pacific and gets us warmed up in a blink sometimes. Yesterday was +8C (46F)! Man it was beautiful, the melting snow made the roads pretty messy. It actually felt like a spring day! The bad thing is when a cold front comes (typically with a bit of snow), it can go away in the same fashion: quick. This year we seem to be back and forth every week or less (with quite a bit of snow already).

So this morning...woke up to a mini blizzard and another 4" of snow with the thermometer on the way down to freezing temps again! The roads sucked.

6047

I'll soon be running out of places to put it in my back yard! Our dogs have quite the playground when they get running and playing. It's going to take half the summer to melt these piles this year.

We went to two parties yesterday. First was mostly in the garage and back yard. We wrenched on a car and a quad for a while then moved to the back yard later. Shorts and t-shirts for most attendants, doors and windows open in the house.

Second soiree was later in the evening after sun down so the temps had dropped. We still wound up in the back yard when the host started a small fire. Apparently, after we left, a couple people went for a polar dip in the pool. The pools get chilly here in the winter because few people heat them.

Sometimes it is good living on a bus route. The windrows were getting large enough that the roads are almost impassible for two cars going opposite directions and you (not me) cannot park on the road without hindering traffic even more. Enter our fine tax dollars at work. This is only the second time they have had to do this in the 17 years we've lived here. The last time they did it, it was way further into the winter. They graded it and hauled it all away (my side of the road and that's all that matters :) ) And BTW it is still really cold outside today!

Cause now its no longer a weather story, its POLITICAL!

It's not the snow, it's the cold. It's warmer in Fairbanks Alaska than in Cleveland right now. As I type this, it's -1F and dropping. When I left for work this morning, it was 31F. We're supposed to go down to -18F tonight with a -40F to -50F wind chill. Snow we can deal with, but this particular flavor of cold is a little much. It's cool though.....by Friday, we'll be in the low 40's.

It's not the highs during the summer months. The lows are what matter to me as the oven season approaches. For another few weeks, it's still cool in the morning and evening so I can work in the garage or outside. When the temps are still 90°-100°F at 2am, the only escape is to stay indoors or to travel to the higher elevation areas of the state.

Yeah, but it is 'dry' heat...right?!? For reference, I had a trip to Dubai back in August 2012 where I had to do some rework on some of our products in a warehouse. Needless to say, the warehouse was not air conditioned in any way, shape or form. They had a swamp cooler unit that didn't do much more than blow air around...better than nothing as the average high for the 5 days I was working was 105, but the kicker was the heat index was 135-140 deg F. Walking outside into direct sunlight was like walking into an IR oven. I have no idea how the road crews there were working in full gear during the midday sun. I had to drink 1 liter of water per hour just to stay barely hydrated. Going out for a short walk after dinner was almost as rough as the relative humidity at 10pm was ~98% with ~100 deg temps still.

In any case, can't complain about today, 75 deg, sunny and light breezes with lows going down into the low 50's tonight...oh yea!

No arguments here, temps today were 84 deg with a 70 deg dew point...can you say HUMID, I knew you could. Hunted jackrabbits in the desert flats on the northern end of Great Salt Lake when I was a teenager, much more manageable heat than the 'wet' crap we see in late summer. On Monday some parts of Tucson received 5.8-6.2 inches of rain. On one day. There were 4+ foot waves of water covering many roadways from door-to-door of businesses that lined the roadways and an hour after the rains stopped you still couldn't see the sidewalks from the roadway. Braille Driving.

The newly-installed electric trolley system had to shutdown for a few hours as the tunnels they used to travel through had 10+ feet of water in them and some streets had 2+ feet of water. The tracks still have lots of rocks and sand in them. I wonder how they play to clean that stuff out? I stayed inside most of that day and traveled home after everyone else got wet.

That's ~50% of our ANNUAL rainfall on ONE DAY. Fun times. Gotta get a bigger boat and refll the scuba tanks.

That's a good question I can't answer. I got it off an app off the internet. It must be true.

Honestly I can't comment. Maybe it's El Niño. It always feels colder when the humidity is up in the winter (think coastal) but it's not usually high here in the winter at this elevation. It makes that -30 c day slightly more tolerable I suppose.

The outside temp gauge here shows 34 F just now. It's been snowing for about an hour after raining reasonably steady for the previous three hours. There's 4-5 inches of snow on my solar panels so solar power output just now is zero.

The arctic air is moving away for a couple of days and going from -14c to possibly above the freezing mark tomorrow as a Chinook is set to blow in (or as Leonardo DiCaprio put it in a recent interview that he "witnessed global warming" while filming "The Revenant" near here and a Chinook came).

It's actually where we are spoiled with a nice westerly wind that brings warm air from the Pacific over the mountains to us.

That's insane prices for fuel! Our high taxing Canadian governments have kept our prices around .95 per liter ($3.61 Cdn./US gallon). I think with conversion that would be around $2.50 US/gal.

We have had a ton of rain over the last two weeks. Yesterday had a couple of episodes where it was monsoon-like for hours!

Last week was interesting, weather-wise. This is "normally" (whatever that means) our cold[er] season. Early in the week started with 2017's typical +6 F over average and ended at +20 F for Wed-Fri.

So if any of you "northerners" (residents of cold country) are thinking about a visit in Southern Arizona this year, y'alls best do it before May, when it gets "hot".

All of them walked out. Played their instruments, still had their vocals. But they are in their early 70's. The guy I saw last year that was performing like he was in his 20's was John Mayall he's 83. You Millennials have never heard of him but a lot of the rock stars started with his band over 50 years ago. Peter Rivera was the best concert I've ever been to, and I've been to a few. His new CD is great, "It is What it is"

Late winter cold snap...

-20°C high with a wind chill around -28°C yesterday and another 4" of fresh snow over the last few days. Its supposed to be above freezing next week again! I blame the stupid groundhog for predicted six more weeks of winter!

We can usually expect some snow in March and even April but it's usually closer to "normal" temps which btw is supposed to be +3°C this time of year.

Mid-70's here all week. Had some friends come in from Montana last week - they left 4 feet of snow and drove back to an additional foot coming.

When I worked at the Bondurant Shccol summer of 1990 the PHX airport was closed during daytime for a two or so weeks. Temps were 125+ and they wouldn't allow any landings/take-offs between 1000-1900 hours.

And there I was working on a 12 acre blacktop standing next to cars with running engines. I think I was younger then.
