I have a chance to get a head off a running 1988 T/C for free. Would this head be a straight bolt on to a stock 84?

it will have an extra bolt hole for the square intake.
so yes.

Is it a better flowing head as well?

Same flow, but with better material in the valves, and the later (good kind) valve stem seals.
Still subject to the same overheating/too high EGT seat cracking issues though.

free... I would grab it. More than likely cracked though. almost every turbocoupe head I have ever pulled was cracked. Running doenst always mean good.

Here is is, came with a exhaust manifold also. INothing obvious looking between the valves with a 20X loop. But I'll have it torn down and checked. I wanted to have extra head just in case the one on my car has any issues. Exhaust turbo studs are good and I have new hardware stockpiled. 55275528552955305531553255335534

Why?
It's an E-3, they all come pre-cracked from the factory.

Its exactly what is on the motor in the car which isn't cracked. What other stock manifold is there ?

The E6. The better of the two stock manifolds.

Well if I come across an E6 I might pick one up. The original in my car isn't cracked @ 223K and the extra I picked up isn't cracked either so guess not all of them are prone to cracking.

What is the casting number on the head? If it's an '88 TC motor it should have an E-6 exhaust manifold.
I've heard the E-6 is acceptable on an '84-'85 SVO in a concours event because it was the factory service replacement part.

Both the original still in the car and this extra are E3's I'll have to look again at the head, the only numbers I saw were those in the pictures.
If the T/C's all had e6 manifolds then I guess this manifold wasn't from a T/C.

If the T/C's all had e6 manifolds then I guess this manifold wasn't from a T/C. Depends on the model year of the engine.
The engines in the TC's and T-Cougars were made from 1983.5 through 1988. All of the 1987/88 TC engines had E6 manifolds on them, earlier than that *could* have been an E6 for late model year 1986 production, and all before that they were all E3 castings.

On the subject of manifolds, where can I get the studs & nuts for the turbo mount?

Well my machine shop just finished mag particle insp.....said the head showing mutiple cracks and is not worth spending any $ on. ( This shop has years of experience with 2.3's in dirt track cars here. )
So my spare head is just a doorstop. I also just received a NOS in the Ford box e6 manifold if anyone is interested let me know.
I decided not to do anything more with car right now other than new valve seals which would like to do in the car if i can get the right tool.

I hate to say i told you so....... But I have many heads at the bottom of Lake carmel anchoring a particular neighbors sailboat. LOL!
with that being said cracks are not always bad if you are doing larger valves because many of the cracks are ground out when the new seats are put in... but it is a gamble because you won't know until they cut out the area for the seats. I would ask your machinist their opinion on that before donating it to davy jones's locker.

So what are the sources to find an uncracked head these days? I'm guessing both my 98,xxx mile 84 SVO and 135,xxx mile 83TC will need replacements. I don't need any doorstops... :D

You will need a shop that can crack check the castings. Contact Bo at www.bo-port.com, one of our prized vendors.

Since you are in the middle of the country, there are a few other options which may save you on shipping costs:
Killian's Porting service in Warner Robbins, GA.
Frank's Head & Engine Service in Griffin, GA
Smithberg Racing in Fort Calhoun, NE.

I don't think high miles always means you have cracks. And like Eric said if cracks are in the valve seat area they can be fixed. The spare head I had showed cracks from the valve seats well into the combustion chamber on # 3 so it was scrapped.
