What is the orange post connector on the center rear of the alternator?

Without pulling out the manual, I think you are asking about the BATT connection.
Found this diagram online, believe it's typical of the wiring....

That would be main battery voltage/power.

Battery positive is the large wire, black with red stripe.
Field is the small wire with the orange/red cap.
Stator is the small yellow/black wire with the black cap.
All are very clearly labeled in the casting on the alternator, right next to the terminals.

ah I was thinking the more modern 5.0 alternator's. Oh wait our cars have a seperate voltage regulator! ahhhhhh, gotta get back in time! back to the future!
