A question for those lucky enough to have an low mileage original car. I know our cars and seats suffer from 'seat lean' but was just curious if the seats are/were basically parallel to the dash or if they had any signs of 'seat lean' from new?

Man, if I get a chance to look over an all original 84 this summer I'll be all over it! ;)

Here's a pic of my 36K mile '86. Seats look even to me.

If you look from the drivers side across the passenger side and sight across the seat backs, are they inline and basically parallel to the dash?

My seats always had a slight 'twist' where the bolsters at the console sat back a bit further than the bolsters closest to the door.

Thank you. I'll have to take a closer look at those bolsters when the weather breaks. Will report back.

Some one was doing some serious shifter rippin' by the sounds of it.
I just picked up a pair of '84 GT seats this summer and the drivers seat is twisted really bad. I will have to untwist it before I recover them.
Rod, if your at Carlisle in June you can look at mine, I havent noticed any twist in them yet.

Good luck trying to "untwist" the back frame, Once they get sprung they don't really go back. Everybody thinks the spot welds fail causing the twist, but actually its the opposite, the flimsy frame with that big opening in the center that starts to twist first and the spots welds fail second.

I got back frames from a 94 that were still straight (same frame under the foam) and added extra rivets all along the frame where the two parts are spot welded together (There was article in one of the "Fox Mustang" magazines on this) Another fix I have seen on a couple of drag cars was to spot weld a .020 sheet steel to fill in the open back on the frame.

I was wondering about the 'twist' and the success rate of fixing them. :confused: Seems once a stamped piece of metal is fatigued and bent, it's hard to get it back to it's original shape and strength.

I may look for a nice pair of temporary seats while I play with the seat backs and see what can be done. After I fix the cracked seat mounting point and freshen up the suspension, I prefer not to lean in my seat going down the road! ;)

dagenham, the previous owner was a rather big guy so even without rippin' I suspect he taxed the seat pretty hard. He must have spend some time in the passenger seat too! :confused:

I need to clarify, the seat repair I did using back frames from a 94 were to my 88 LX which uses the same positive seat back latch as the 94/95.
But you may still be able to use them on the 84-86 cars if you change the seat back inerta seat latch assy from the 84-86 onto the 94 frame. Pretty sure it bolts up to the frame exactly the same.
