Here are a few shots of my bottom end parts. All in all its vary clean for a car with 170K on the clock. I am confused with the second ring having a 45'angle on the top. Doesn't seem like the way to make it seal. The other question I have is when I took the rods out the rod and cap have numbers stamped on them like someone had it apart before. The original owner says its never been apart and I know I haven't had it down. All the bearings are standard sizes. The rod journals mic out at 2.0465" and the mains are 2.3982" both checked at top and sides of journals. Less than .0002 total variance across the crank. Its on the bottom of the range can I polish it and call it good?

All the Ford 2.3 OHC engines I've taken apart had the rods and caps are marked from the factory.

Good to hear. The cylinder walls were .0025 out of round but 3.7825 at the worst spot. I believe it'll clean up by + .010. What thickness of torque plate (I think that's what their called) do I need to use?
Mike what do you know about the ring packs? Was this one a Monday morning car that someone put on upside down?

Look for a mark on the second ring - that mark (near one end) should be on the top.

Hard to tell from the poor color in the pic. Depending on what year the engine is, the sop ring should be a moly-filled reverse twist ring and, usually, looks black in the center. The second ring is used to wipe oil off the cylinder wall while the third is used to put it on the wall. The stock turbo ring is chorme plated according to the docs for all 2.3L turbo engines between 1979 to 1989 althogh there is a rumor that the first few 87 TC engines used moly facings on the top and second rings. The oil ring is a typical PC-style 3-piece with chrome rails.

I have a stock ring set in the shop somewhere. Maybe I'll have time over the coming weekend to dig them out and take some pics. Remind me on Friday (I'm woking on Sunday so that day is out).

Rings are almost always directional fit, meaning the compression ring beveled edge must go either face up or down and end gaps must be spaced apart properly on all three ring gaps to prevent any excessive oil leak thru. When you get the new rings, in the box should be the specific directions for ring positioning and spacing.
All rod/caps are marked on all engines. don't mix em up and make sure numbers align on same side of rod/cap. good luck!
