I haven't driven my 86 in a few and when I fired her up I got a puff of blue smoke. No biggie it was clear immediately. Driving out the car ran rough under boost and when I shut her down I could smell oil in the turbo area under the intercooler. Took off the vam air duct on the turbo end and it was wet, not excessive but oil in there. Is this a normal issue? Routine cleaning and maint. procedures for SVO?

Is this a normal issue? Routine cleaning and maint. procedures for SVO? Normal, Maybe. Expected? yes.

Normal maint to clean that up - at least yearly.

The tailpipe oil on start-up is usually due to leaking, old exhaust valve stem seals.

Brake cleaner is fine. I usually rinse with isopropanol just cause i like the smell better than brake cleaner. And it's less expensive.

I have found armorall extreme wheel & tire cleaner does a great job at cleaning the VAM hose. Just spray inside, allow it to soak (I use a utility sink) & after about 10 minutes I use a soft bristle brush & cold water to clean out the hose. No need to scrub hard, I just use the brush to loosen up grime in the crevices.

No need to scrub hard, I just use the brush to loosen up grime in the crevices. If you have ANY built-up crud, you need to clean more often.

True, but that is why I only suggested a build up of grime. Crud would be more gritty or coarse as well as difficult to remove. Grime is more off a film or light coating of oil or similar.

Note here that a build-up of "grime", a collection of condensed, solidified oil residue, is OK. However if there's any "grit" or "coarseness" to the deposits, that means there's a leak (or defect) in the air filtration system (filter, hoses, etc). THAT's where the sand-like stuff comes from.

Those foam filters don't filter very well in most cases. Just sayin'.

Any issues or concerns with running a throttle body cleaner or brake clean thru the VAM with the motor running??

No benefit. Keep in mind that burning most brake cleaners makes a cheapo form of mustard gas, which is VERY toxic and burns on the way into the lungs.

YMMV.

Cleaned the VAM car running much better. My ducting is getting ratty is it 3 inch by 8 inch? ( Between VAM and turbo). Any sources for purchase?

Larry,
I show I have 3 VAM hoses in my inventory. I'll dig them out & send you some pics tomorrow. I will give you a price after I've had an opportunity to look them over.

There are alternatives if you do not want to use a stock hose. This is what I used in my 88 for the hose between the air filter & the turbo (not running a VAM) - http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/cat.php. I was lucky to be able to pick up a couple feet of scrap from a friend that restores small aircraft. It's some pretty spendy stuff.

Larry,

All hoses have the wire inside still & all three could use a mild cleaning. The one on the right in the pic is the best one, the other two have some minor wear spots.

How does $20 shipped sound?

I'll try to post more internal pics tomorrow when I get my computer to cooperate.
