View Full Version : Underside clean up & questions on Vibration dampeners?

Ok while the engine was being rebuilt I also took time to clean up the bottom side. The car spent its entire life here in TX so only had very light surface rust spots on the undersides that cleaned up with a little scotch bright. Just because I had the time after I washed it down I shot the bottom areas with a semi gloss clear that I had. Really brings out the original factory (i.e. lousy) underside paint. Even though its by no means a show car it really brightens up the bottom like it would have looked say on a 25k mile cars instead of a 125k car. I forgot to take before/after pictures so I self ban here for a moment. (insert Jeopardy theme tune here)
Ok I'm back
Question: I know there isn't a vibration dampener on the rear like the later FOX cars, but there is a bracket at the back of the trans that appeared to have something mounted on it. Was this a dampener of some sort? Obviously mine is missing so I would like to find the correct part.

You are the only one I have ever run across asking about getting one to put on!! We all asked if we could take them off!! LOL

My car has rear damper, don't think they ever had one at the rear of the tranny just the large one on the drive shaft.

Anybody have pictures of what these dampers look like and how they mount? I want to put them back on if I can still find them.

Well I guess we'll have to settle for the 'after' pictures of the bottom of your car before you ban yourself again. :D
I have the rear vibration damper off my my 84 now in order to change the gear oil so I'll get you some pictures.
Thought I had some pictures before I removed it too but couldn't find them.....and I'm not banning myself! :p

This be the one. ;)
From an 84 SVO, not sure if all years were the same?
Obviously the factory finish was 'natural' by the look of the rust.

Yep that's the one I'm looking for. Mounting brackets are completely different than the 5.0 cars. And rust was the standard factory finish on just about all of the rear end housings too.

Yea, makes for great 'patina'. Why couldn't Ford just shoot it with a little paint????

Simple...it would have taken paint ($) and labor ($) to apply it.
