SVO rear calipers

Just posted this on FEP too.





Then, the calipers arrived. I was somewhat concerned about the left rear, since it seemed a little sticky on the maiden voyage. Swapped in the "new" calipers, and what do you know? The parking break mechanism on BOTH calipers didn't work http://vb.foureyedpride.com/images/smilies/mad.png http://vb.foureyedpride.com/images/smilies/mad.png I made the decision to re-install the old calipers. I hope it holds for the voyage to and from Carlisle. Just aggravating that both projects for Saturday didn't work out. And even more aggravating because there is no reason for the reman calipers to have not been factory tested, because they were obviously defective.

When I replaced the rear calipers on my 84 SVO I think I went through 2 sets before deciding to dig into the caliper to see what was wrong. http://vb.foureyedpride.com/images/smilies/mad.png I was so mad I didn't care if I lost my core charge so I tore one apart.

Ends up, there was grit, perhaps blasting media?, between the piston and the bore so when you applied the parking brake the piston would not retract. Contacted the re-man company and overnighted the calipers to them and they confirmed a problem on the line. Sent me new calipers but I was still out the shipping to them but was just glad to have working calipers.

Thought I'd mention this in case any of the defective calipers are still out there in stock.

Rodster, hello! If I am reading this correctly I have the same issue. Replaced the rear calipers with reman. They work great now, no more friction without application. however the parking brake is non-existent?

Hey Stockman... It's been awhile but I believe once I applied the parking brake the piston wouldn't retract and the brakes hung up but can't remember if the parking brake stopped working. Sounds very similar tho.

I have some new calipers that don't work correctly either. I thought it was something I did.

Brings back memories of tearing apart my faulty re-manufactured calipers. :( After reading it, I'm starting to recall more details from the past. I think the problem was with debris in the threads of the adjuster. :confused:

I can recall checking the adjuster on the car and on the bench and after applying the parking brake something didn't return to the correct position.

I do know I was thrilled after about the 3rd time of installing calipers, pulling on parking brake handle, having the brakes apply, releasing the handle and the brakes released! Oh the simple joys of something finally working correctly! :D

I have some new calipers that don't work correctly either. I thought it was something I did.

Sounds suspicious. Maybe you can check them out to see if the cause is the same?

Rodster - Thanks for the updated info. The car sat for a couple months while I was painting it last year. On the maiden voyage, the LR hung up. With Carlisle coming up fast, and the fact that I didn't know how old that caliper was anyway, I attempted the replacement. The first set I got the parking brake didn't work at all. It seemed like the PB mechanism wasn't even internally connected somehow. The next set worked fine.

One of these months, spring will set in here in New England, and I will actually get to see the car.....

Sounds like the same symptom on my calipers. Probably lots of ways the re-man folks could screw it up. :confused:

I think the problem was with debris in the threads of the adjuster. :confused: All of the adjuster portij is exposed to brake fluid - so dirty fluid means dirt in the adjuster mechanism.

Note the actual parking brake cam and ball stuff is separate from the brake fluid area.
