Wow, I learned something today. I totally see that one in the picture is blue. For some reason I don't think mine are blue (anymore?) as they would have stood out I'm sure.

The proper style of nut is a flange nut. The nuts pictured at the begining of the thread are prevailing torque lock nuts (https://www.boltdepot.com/Browse.aspx?Category=Nuts&Subcategory=Prevailing_torque_lock_nuts)

I don't recall if the facory ones have a searated washer surface; first thought is no, but I need to check.

I wonder if Ford still services that part?

May I ask a serious question? Why were these nuts blue to begin with, and why these locations?

Blue part is not known. The ;location is where there were 6mm studs sticking up that needed things, braces, brackets, etc. retained (that could be removed easily by removing hte nuts).

On the 85.5/86 SVO the two rear-side intake upper-to-lower studs mounted the injector harness bracket, retained by such nuts. And the forward, outer intake stud mounted a vibration brace to the outer end of the alternator bracket.

And there were a few places near the air cleaner/VAF area.

I heard someplace that the Metric nuts were blue and the SAE nuts were not. But I was wrong once before...

The infamous "blue nuts" are painted, not plated.
Greg Hess has the secret formula to match the original "Robin's egg" blue with Testors enamel model car paint.
I will defer to Lisa to determine if Mitch'e nuts are flanged or serrated.

Pat, my research has led me to believe that from the factory it was a form of blue phosphate plating. The bolts that hold the throttle cable bracket to the intake manifold have this finish also. I've also seen the onion heads nuts on 79 cars with that finish to. I believe it meant "torque to run" The Haas can clarify that fact I'm sure.

Gee thanks Chalky "WORK WORK WORK WORK " Mel Brooks !Yes blue phosphate. Called out torque. M8 1.28 Hex Flag Lock Process sheet shows 6 to 9 Ft Lbs. This was important at the engine (knock sensor) as the one at the alt is 15 to 22 Ft Lbs So glad I paid $500 for the 1983 Program redbook and the process pages now ! LOL

Our '79 coupe has blue nuts on the onion heads but they look more "ford blue" not plated.
