The hvac controls are supposed to light up red like the gauge cluster, correct????
If so, are the bulbs red, or are there red diffusers inside like the cluster????

Yes they are supposed to light up. Bulbs are clear, just make sure if you need to replace you don't use ones that are too high of a wattage. Ask me what happens when you do....

You could avoid the wattage or high heat problem that JT speaks of by switching to LED bulbs.

Yeah, I was already considering doing that.
But what I really want to know is what color the hvac controls are supposed to be when lit, red or green?????????????
Mine light up green.

All 84-86 SVO's are Red, same as the dash lights.

Mine light up green. It appears that your HVAC box is from a non-SVO model. Note Joe's comment below:

Early 4-eye cars use green dash lights. 79 thru 82 I believe. I'm pretty sure the red dash lights started in the 83 model year.
Its not a terrible job to replace the hvac control module with the correct one. Just have to be careful because the plastic housings tend to get brittle with age.

Damn!
Well at least I found paint today for my needles, and maybe the hashes on the speedo that i just picked up.
I looks like Testors model paint has a discontinued color (of course) flourescent red seems to match an unfaded spot on on of my needles. I looked at different flourescent oranges but they did not seem to be anything close to a color match.
