View Full Version : Hello from the 'dark side'...

Hello from Chicago, not really in the city limits, but very near anyway. Yep, I am sure most of you folks recognize the screen name, I am dropping in to say hello to folks I haven't chatted/seen in a while and hope to get re-antiquated with. For those who don't know me, I play a simple Mfg Engineer at a little grill company by day and a shade tree mechanic by night when needed. Heck, I even pretend I am a race car driver a couple times a year... I have owned my 86 SVO for just over 22 1/2 years now and still find things to modify and play with. Even with 111K miles on the short block and chassis, the car still holds its own on the track when called upon. If you want to see some of my on-track adventures you can check out my YouTube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/user/svoturbo4 Now let's see what I can do to get my first 'ban', eh??:stick_poke:

So just outside of Chicago is the dark side? Interesting...

Nice racing pictures and nice looking ride! 22.5 proud years of ownership right there! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ted, been wanting to ask you for years again what that clear protective film you had on your car at the Reunion was???

Now, you're banned until you answer the questions!!!

I like the car! What kind of wheels do you have on it? Since you've had it for 22.5 years, have you done anything to it? Or is it mostly stock still?

Beautiful Car Ted!!! I love the bumper cam and that RED front sway bar. That is a CLEAN SVO.

Thanx for the welcome folks. To answer some of the questions, here you go:

FoxBuddy - No, the 'dark side' is somewhat of an 'inside' joke that a few folks on here will get. I could explain more if you really want.

Chalky - I will need to look at my rolls when I get home tonight, so your answer is being worked on.

ULcards99 - Sarah, thanx. The wheels are TSW Nurburgrings, 17x8", +35mm offset, Bridgestone RE-01R's in 245/45ZR17. Certainly not stock, many mods over the years. I have a 'project' thread over on the SVOCA forums for more details, too many to list here. DaveS could fill you in on a few of them, he has seen my car a few times.

8T6 SVO - Thanx, it looks cleaner in the pics than in person ;) That is an Eibach swaybar for a regular Fox (36mm tubular), which will be replaced with an SN-95 bar (35mm tubular) for better fitment. The ends are too narrow forcing the endlinks at a bad inward angle. I have a matching red one on the rear too which does fit properly (see below), along with some other addtional red/black links.

Rest - Thanx, hopefully I won't stir up too much dust over here.

Nice Ted! Glad you could drop in here.

Since Chalky jumped the gun (he doesn't hold the hammer this week), both of you are banned until your next post! That's right Chalky, you are banned until Ted's next post.

Chalky, I have an extra TF hammer you can borrow. 7122I'm so confused.

So Ted is now banned (until his next post) on turboford too??

Or Paul and Chalky are re-banned until Ted's next post?

Speaking of my confusion:

Hello from the 'dark side'...
If Ted is from the "Dark Side", where are we now??

I'm so confused.

Me too, but I feel better now, it's been weeks since I was banned...;)

If Ted is from the "Dark Side", where are we now??

light side, right side, left side, wrong side???

Now I'm confused...again...still

Oh, so now I have a 'pending' ban on TF...makes me want to sign up now!! I thought this was the 'red' side over here...maybe I was confused...

In any case, here is the answer to Chalky's question: I am using a 10" wide roll of the 3M Protective Polyethylene Tape 5187C. It is a 5.0mil thick 'high tack' temporary tape. Do a quick Google search and you can get to 3M's site to gather more info. My 3M supplier at work was kind enough to get me a 'sample' 100yd roll for 'test' purposes. Should be enough to last me ~5-10 total years worth of road trips.

Good to see you Rich, I am guessing your car still looks the same as below?

Not to worry Ted, you have to screw up really, really, really bad to get 'banned' over at TF.
Most of the people I've tossed were because they 'ripped off' another member.

They only let me on here because I have four RED cars...lol

You have to be confused to own any kind of 2.3T powered vehicle. Pinto motors with hair dryers.

I'm watching for your TF registration...

I get banned for banning someone. Where's the justice!!!!

Thanks Ted, I'll look that stuff up soon.

I'm watching for your TF registration...

All 3 Mustangs that I have owned/own have been 4-cyl versions. First was a 79 Turbo, which lasted me 29 days before my driving inexperience caught up to me. Second was an 80 NA 4-cyl, which lasted me 12 years/162,000 miles and even got down to 15.9's @ 84 mph. Third is my current 86 SVO, which is coming up on 23 years/54,000 miles.

I will work on that registration next week, busy with my local car club tomorrow and family Sunday.

Nice that you have pics of former cars, there are a few of mine I wish I had taken pics of. :(

I'll watch for your reg, you might as well be part of ALL the insanity...lol

This was my weak attempt at sarcasm, I've known about these cars since the mid eighties, should have started sooner.
My first fox is an '86 LX 2.3n/a 4-spd, I was going to do a 460/C-6 swap but then said, wait a minute...that was back in 2001.
Now these things keep following me home...not sure if that's good or bad.

I only have 2 pics of the 79 and 4 of the 80, all taken by my older sister...I guess she is good for one thing in this world. :stick_poke: I wish I had taken pics of the 80 in its final stages, where it was lowered, had aftermarket wheels, 84 SVO tailpipe, "2.3" fender badges along with an 83 GT interior...not bad considering I did all that while in high school. The tranny from an 84 SVO really woke the performance up in the car, along with the 3.27 gears. I actually had plans on dropping a 351W into that car too. Even went so far as purchasing a used 351 from a guy, disassembled it to prep for machine work, ported the heads, purchased a few items to 'hop it up', but never went through with it. Ended up selling off the new items and scrapped the engine once I purchased my SVO.

Some folks may be wondering about Chalky's request on the 'tape'. Well, I have always used a temporary protective tape for my road trips, more peace of mind than anything, as most of my paint chips have happened locally anyway. Here are a couple pics showing where I apply it and what it looks like after a rainy road trip back home. Enjoy.

A snapshot from my work trip to Dubai back in 2012. I may still have a 'source' for these :p

Count me in! That's an easy one, only ~770m and I can stop in Cleveland and see my two 'red-headed stepsons'. ;)
Mark, what date(s) are you thinking of?

That's an easy one, only ~770m a... Around here "770m" means 770 meters. About 0.478456 miles.

Somehow I don't think that's what you meant.

Dave, I had to look at MapQuest on this. I didn't realize KY was that close to MI, I must have slept through geography in school...
The trip is almost the exact distance as my trip to Carlisle from CT, within ~5 miles. (ok Mike?)

I certainly can dig the Fest! Mark, I know what you mean about the temps, topped out here at 60 deg today, so better, but still a good 10 deg off of 'normal'. We did have snow here yesterday morning, which is what you were seeing today. My sister lives in Alma, just up the road from you, so I could easily make a full trip out of it as she has been bugging me for the past couple years to drop by.
