On April third of this year I posted my 100th comment on this forum. I have posted six or seven since then, but now find that I am down to 97 posts again.
This is much worse than being banned.
Was I penalized 10 posts for asking a really bad question last week?
"Is it possible for the timing chain to slap against anything when cold, then stop as the engine warms up?"

Yep, you were bad. Let that be a lesson to you!
Altrernately:
Post Count is a continuously variable number. As one would expect it is a sum of all the current posts for each user account. Keyword being "current".
There are processes that run periodically (as scheduled tasks) that delete old threads (usually defined as no activity >90 days) in some forums (such as Welcome and Testing). Some of these tasks are event-driven by the forum software, rather than date/time driven. For example there is a task to update User Ranks that runs and updates the user title (Building Boost in your case), rank, post count, etc whenever a title or rank changes.
There are other processes, running as scheduled tasks, that process the email queue, send TapaTalk notifications, clean-up the trash (I think that means drop Mitch's connection), update attachments, etc. And there's a bunch of other stuff it does that I have no idea about.
Does that answer your question?

When does the NSA get its info delivered? 24 hours after the check clears.

If I understand you correctly Mike, the number of posts that we have showing at any given time on this forum may fluctuate.
I want to thank you for your deep and thoughtful explanation of how the system works with the eventual fluctuations.
Evidently I was recently fluked by the system.

Ron Hence why this response is so much easier:

I will change it to some other randon number and then we can see how long it takes for the system processes to re-count and update. Just for fun.

I wonder how many digits I can enter into the field? Hmmm...
I recall how I found out a few years back that eBay limits car part auctions bidding to $100Million/US. That had some very fascinating ripple effects and unexpected results.
