On my 86, the right exhaust tip is about 1/2" higher than my left tip. I've noticed this in a few other rear shots of SVO's. Is this indicative of the way they came from the factory ?

Probably has more to do with the "batchelor sag"...

Your left leg is shorter than your right one. Place a 1/2" thick piece of plywood under your left foot and repeat the test.

Check the condition of all four of the the rubber donuts on the exhaust hangers. Maybe one of them is busted.
Some nameless Ford design stylist to a Ford bean counter and a Ford engineer: " I got an idea. Why don't we put dual exhaust on a four cylinder Mustang?"
Bean counter: "We could eliminate many parts from inventory with that change."
Engineer: " My job here gets safer by the minute. Now I get to design a Y-pipe!"

What's a Y-pipe?
It's an X-Pipe for a four cylinder.

I have checked the condition, all rubber mounts seem to be in good shape. As for the dual exhaust on a 4 cylinder engine; that is one of the primary reasons I sought an 86 (or 85.5). I prefer the balanced look of the pipes.
