For the most part a banning around here is a Rite of Passage ritual and not used as punishment. Not terribly dissimilar from "encouraging" pledges to bring beer to the parties. Patrick can explain the finer details of Ban Hammer usage, if you ask him.

Of course one could be banned (until their next post) for merely asking why they were banned. It's a Catch-22 for sure. Tough Love.
