View Full Version : Price for used water cooled turbo?

Guys I've been wanting to upgrade to a water cooled t3/t4 for awhile, but all the new water cooled ones I could find are upwards of a grand. A little to much for the budget right now.

So to make a short story long...

I'm in the autocraft shop awhile back when a guy sees the SVO and wants to know if I would like to buy a used turbo.

I'm interested 'cause its water cooled, but neither he or I are up to date on used turbo prices.

It appears to be from a Merkur XR4Ti, as it has a two bolt flange coming out of the compressor housing which is a size .60. The turbine blades have a few minor nicks and dings in them, they are not that big, but I'm not sure what "to big" is.

Also Can I swap my no flange .63 for the two bolt .60? Would need some guidance on this.

The hot side is off and the blades look good on it but there are remains of three bolts that were broken off in the housing that need to be removed.

The shaft has a very slight side to side play, but I've heard that this is normal because the shaft is centered and supported on a layer pressurized oil when the engine is running.

I think it would be a nice addition to the SVO after it is overhauled by Evergreen. I have a set of new Forced4 stainless steel water lines to go with it. Just need to know how much to offer him to get the ball rolling.

Any help is always appreciated.

Thanks,

The merkur turbo is the same turbo used on most svo, mustang , capri and early birds non intercooler, the only thing your gonna have to change is the snail or buy the adapter.

You're mixing hot and cold side numbers. The Merkurs came with 0.48 hot sides and 0.60 cold sides. It's VERY rare to have any marks, dings or damage on the turbine (hot side, high-strength, high-temp steel)) while it's fairly common to have them on the cold intake side (light weight aluminum).

You can easily swap the hose outlet comp housing with the flange housing - both are identical otherwise (although the inlet elbow may have different angles on it - if so, use the one form the SVO that came with the hose comp housing). Clocking will be different so pay attention to the wastegate arm length setting.

If you're going to have it rebuilt by Charlie, most likely the damaged comp wheel will be replaced. Rebuildable cores are worth $100-250 so that should cover the whole price range. Ask Charlie what he would charge for a core and don't pay more than that.

Thanks for the direction. I'll drop Charlie an email and see what he says.

Talked with Charlie, He said if I could afford the down time it would be better to just overhaul the one that's in there right now, he said he would upgrade the housing to water cooling and build it to suit my style of driving. Neighbor said I could borrow her car so looks like its better to put the money into the overhaul.
