My 1986 9L

I realized any trace of my car from my welcome forum thread on SVOCOP was gone a long time ago. Here is the story so far of my 9L starting last summer (my screen name on FEP is 82GTforME and the original thread for this is there) http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?150609-Who-says-dreams-can-t-come-true-Look-what-I-went-and-did-1986-SVO!

I purchased this car in July 2013.

Even though they are rare to see in Canada; even back in the day, the SVO had always intrigued me which meant I WANTED ONE! Ever since I had my first car ('81 coupe in '87) I knew of them and wished I could get one. After getting back into working on my '82 and regularly typing "mustang" into Ebay and Kijiji I happened upon what I always wanted! My preference was always the '86.
This is an original Canadian car and now it comes back to within an hour and a half of it's home dealer. It has 150k KM on it and is in very complete original condition (what I wanted- I didn't want another full blown or even partial project). Original paint, very nice complete cloth interior. I guess a survivor to some. It has been parked since 2007. It needs a little TLC but that I can do. Previous to the guy I bought it from it was shown at some local Alberta car shows. It came with all of the original manuals, a copy of the dealer invoice, the warranty card, the Koni adjuster , even a bunch of SVO club stuff (Canada and US) with numerous copies of The Turbo Times etc.
There are some small issues I will be asking all of you SVO experts about into the future. First stop? Inspection, insurance and registration!

I was busy the first few days.

I started out using a clay bar kit to take off the embedded dust particles and then moved onto a Meguires compound with a drill attachment to take off the oxidation from sitting. I think it sat outside for a few of the seven it was apparently parked before being covered and put in a portable garage. This did a great job in itself. I finished with a hand applied and buffed California Gold liquid wax. What a night and day difference!

Just like talking to someone with bad teeth (no offence to those with bad teeth) the yellowed lenses of the headlights attract the eye and IMO look bad.

I decided (with the advice of a co-worker) to do an over the counter lens restore. There was a Permatex brand kit at the local parts store. This kit came with a drill attachment and two steps of very fine wet sanding disks and some polishing compound after. The key to sanding success I noticed was keeping the surface damp and to keep moving whilst sanding. I wasn't expecting a miracle as in the clarity of some new polycarbonate clear lens of course but I think the results are fairly good! One day I'll find a nice replacement set.

There is still a little yellow around the edges that I could probably get by hand sanding.

Made an SVO rookie mistake and painted white on my fog light covers. At least I did a good job:
I finally finished the exterior polishing and decided to look at a few other things. The Marchal's are really hidden compared to the '82 and the covers a little awkward to unclip but everything was there!
The lights themselves are very good with minor pitting and they work.

The covers, although original, showed their 150000km age with some minor road abrasion and no white left.

I used the same body rubbing compound I had, buffed them up and with a deft touch, put three coats of matte white model paint I had lying around on. Not perfect or NOS, but not bad for about half an hour! :tu:

Not sure if the side ones are in the right spots. I copied the location of the driver's side.

I put on the two emblems that were given to me with the car. I turns out I was still missing one SVO badge.

I put the one SVO on the front quarter so they each had one:

There is a small dent under this emblem and other small indications these emblems were pried off previously with little love.

Timing had me enter a (my very first) local show and shine a few weeks after I got the car.
Last minute I made up a sign, put some quick stats about the SVO and used my son's music stand. Good timing for us, it was first come first served and we got a spot on a corner.This was the only fox body on the lot!
There were quite a few people looking at it. Of course everyone tends to gravitate to the big fancy muscle cars though.

I was looking for a Motorcraft battery for my 82. They apparently weren't available anymore.

I don't usually go to the dealer often but on an unrelated trip to the parts counter I asked about this battery. They were in eastern Canada, three days to order one in and $133. Reasonable I thought, so I ordered one for my '82. It is the same part number (BXT-56)for '82-'86 according to them. They are still around (for now). It looks to have a good warranty; three year free replacement and then pro-rated after that to 100 months!
After I got it, I immediately decided this would go in the SVO! It fits like a glove and looks like it belongs!

So, on my way home from a second show last summer, I was taking a cloverleaf to get on the freeway. I was wearing flip/flops and while going around quick I felt a few drips on my gas pedal foot. Uh oh!
This looked like trouble.

I decided to bypass the heater core so I could at least get a couple more drives out of it last fall. Of course being stored for the winter, heat won't be an issue.
Wow, why did I decide to do this with the intercooler on? Not impossible, but much more difficult!

Both of the metal lines connecting to the engine are 5/8" OD. I removed both of the factory hoses and looped a hose to bypass the core.

I did not like the proximity to the turbo and exhaust so I wrapped it with cladding nearest them. Not 100% but it will suffice for now. Ran it until the fan came on; no leaks :tu:

I took some nice pics late last summer and made the FEP calendar (April)!
The days are getting shorter and nice days and nights will get fewer and less frequent. Living near the foothills of the Rockies allows for some nice backyard to see. Windy, hilly roads through and into the foothills and this car enjoys that! I wanted to get some high quality pictures of my car and this was an opportunity to enjoy an evening jaunt and get the pictures. I would say it was a 20 mile one way from my house to here. I wished it wasn't cloudy, it would have been even more perfect!

There was also the 1986 Ford New Vehicle Warranty booklet (Canadian-with French from the back) and the warranty card and tag with the original owners name on it. Date of sale: June 3, 1986 So it didn't sit as long as some did with a January build.

There was also this paper envelope with what looks like the information for the wheel lug locks. I don't think you can get one now so don't even think of coming and stealing my wheels.

Here is a bunch of SVO related club stuff that came with the car; correspondance from one PO (I have some correspondence between him and the SVOOA regarding membership, shows etc. There is also an old hand written judging form for this car in his name and a picture of him beside the car!) Provenance!! Plus a few copies of some magazine articles and many of the Turbo Times newsletters and more.

This I hadn't noticed before; the car was bought in July 1990 for $12500 Canadian and already had 96k km on it. That's 60k miles of the 90k miles (151k km) that are currently on the odometer. So only 30k miles in the last 24 years :tu:

Before you pull the heater core, run a rod up the drain line for the A/C (it is located on the exterior firewall under the A/C drier). It may save you ~10 hours of time and lots of aggravation.
The drain line is best accessed from below the car. If it is a blocked drain line, water will come pouring out after you run a rod up through the drain line.
The attached picture shows the A/C drain line where it exits the car.

Thanks Mike. Quite lucky I chanced upon this car when I did because it's everything one could hope for. The guy I bought it from was having seller's remorse the day I was on my way to "look at it" so far away. The tires are 225-50/R16 FUZION ZR1 summers that came on it. A quick look has them unavailable now.

Here are a couple of pictures from the Kijiji ad. He also had another 86 1C but this was the gem which was in the back under a portable tent/garage when I picked it up.

Thanks Dave. The car has had a nice base clear repaint somewhere along the lines but the previous owner must have raced it on the back gravel roads judging by some of the chips on some of the forward facing surfaces. That's another project along with repainting the trim though.

It is the second time I have heard this theory about the plugged AC drain but I didn't think that direction initially as I hadn't even really ran the AC since I had gotten it the month before (and I didn't have a picture to show me where to check it! Thanks!). You've given me food for thought and hopefully an easy way out! I only erred on the side of caution as I still wanted to enjoy the car. If this is the problem I will be one happy (and warm when I need to be) camper. I'll report back hopefully this year.

I'm immersed in another project right now and had to park this car where I rent a garage a couple of miles away to keep me from getting distracted. That and I need the space in my garage right now but this car will get some more attention soon. A double garage is not enough!

I've had the SVO out a couple of times so far this spring. I'm working on another project right now and this car can really be distracting :) so I haven't spent as much quality time with her (I'm glad I have it stored a couple of miles away or I would get nothing else done around here). Some TLC and minor are needed but it is still as reliable and fun as hell (my '82 didn't want to start either :avatarbeat-dead-hor)!

I'm working on another project right now and this car can really be distracting :) so I haven't spent as much quality time with her (I'm glad I have it stored a couple of miles away or I would get nothing else done around here).

So my other project was "complete" as of May this spring!!

This allowed for me to spend some time on MY car finally!

So in June, I had the car out a couple of times over the month. The first day I went over to the storage, I see some critter had found a nice dry place to store some food for later! I took a good look through a few things before I fired it up to ensure they never got more creative in their location!

I've had a list of things I've wanted to do to this car since I bought it yet have not spent any time on it since the initial stuff right after I got it. I've totally taken advantage of the reliability and driveability of the car since then!
On the top of my list was to repaint the trim. Based on the oxidation I removed in my initial polish of the (actually) decent base/clear and the headlights, you knew the car had sat outside for a period. When the car was painted, it does not look like the trim had been redone at all. That or it was in decent shape when it was repainted and the sitting was afterwards.
Regardless, the factory grey trim was faded quite a bit and there was bare urethane and minor deterioration just starting. As I've said before, I love driving this car and it deserves some of my time.
I also had this to upper bi-wing to install. I can't believe I bought it two and a half years ago. Mine has some just-noticeable sagging and movement when driving plus there was a crack near the mount on one side.

I got something delivered yesterday. I wonder what it could be? :confused:

I took my son's car over to my rented storage garage nearby and brought the SVO in around the beginning of July! Time for some updates!

The mounting for the replacement was broken and the stud missing when I opened the packaging on the replacement. I had no idea when I bought it, but what can you do :(
I transplanted the stud out of mine. With the magic of JB weld and the texture of the existing material that is in the void made this a very robust fix and quite simple to do.

It looks like the original wing was repaired looking at what came out of the other spoiler. The bosses were broken on both!

A little bit of trial and error as the placement was out very slightly but it worked out good. Note the extra screw hole on the bottom of the upper. It looks like it's factory to me but from what I have learned there should be a tab with a hole in it that goes under the lower spoiler and it's top screw goes through them both. C'est la vie! I decided I needed to use the holes. The reason the old upper never held too fast was that it's tab was broken also and the bottom was never fastened and I never even knew it!

So after just completing a full project and knowing what (I think) the scope of this project is I start removing items:
Rear spoiler, front and back window trim, mirrors, dew wipes, cowl etc. I was thinking originally that the window trim would be a quick spray from the outside. What I hadn't really given much thought to was how it was actually painted from the factory.
It wraps all the way around the inside of the door jamb and the window frames. To expose it all you need to remove door panels, window seals and loosen the rear quarter panel to remove most of the door seals. I can see how these small "projects" get out of hand!
Good thing I have a lot of recent experience with this, so it did go that much quicker!

You can see how faded things looked in the sunlight. You could see the black plastic of the upper in a couple places and there wasn't much left on the cowl either.

As I had said, there was little paint left in places. On the body side of the quarter window molding beside the sail panel as well as the top of the driver's door frame there was a little surface rust due to how it was worn off. I removed the rust and sanded down all of the body portions. I then used some Eastwood rust encapsulator over all of these areas prior to top coating.
I had one moulding on the front that I had to replace due to a rock dent but overall the window trim was in good repaintable shape. I removed the dew wipes from the moulding to properly prep and paint them.

I did some research on the proper grey that the SVO's used and there was a recommendation that Late Model Resto has a pre-mixed aerosol available. LMR cannot ship this product to Canada though so I went through the only supplier around here that deals with them and got three cans brought in (two years ago!).

After prepping the trim I thought I would give the back sides a little paint. I soon realized that I would not have enough! I knew it would take a while to get more in so I decided to get the SEM recommendation which was the alternative to the LMR product. A quick comparison and of course they dont match well enough to use side by side. Good thing I never proceded with final coating anything.
I ended up having to wait a couple of days to get to the body shop supply store during the week but was successful.

In the meantime I repainted the antenna and wiper arms black as they are supposed to be.

The trim, lower spoiler and loose parts I was good with just sanding and painting with the SEM paint.

The newer upper and the bumper strips needed some help I figured. It took a little more prepping to even get them looking good enough spray onto. I decided I would mix up and spray some 2K primer I had from my previous project ;) This way I would maybe avoid any adhesion or deterioration issues in the future! A little more prep and seal and we were done with that!

After that was getting to some spraying. Tough getting a good finish with the rattle can. Tough when we were in the middle of two weeks of at least some rain every day (and I painted it outside in between! The SEM to me seems a little runny and you need to be careful not to put down too much. Lucky to be painting mainly skinny, one pass items. The lower spoiler took a couple of extra coats due to some striping I got when I tried to rush when I ran out of paint and had to get more the following day! :mad:

In the future, if I ever had to do this again, I would get paint color matched, mixed and then spray with the gun. SEVEN (7) cans of that stuff! Plus they are a more $ than the SEM trim black can and smaller cans to boot! Seven was just enough actually (okay some part did get a few extra coats)!

Definitely a lot of work by the time it was all said and done! I am glad that I took the time to do it right and do all of it (I have not done the rocker moulding nor the bottom of the rear spat at this time...yet).

Here is an example of the before and after differences between old and redone. This is a mirror housing I used the mirror out of as a replacement for a non-functioning remote but is close to the look of the trim on this car before repainting.

So of course while the trim painting was going on, I was working on some other interior improvements!

I had gotten a better replacement shift boot and shifter knob a couple of years ago. The glue had detached from the washer and the boot and the knob weren't the best to look at anymore.

The console had to come out to get at the boot properly. I had some rattling coming from the dash/console area and could never really isolate it. Not that I had really looked hard- I just loved to drive it and never spent a lot of time making improvements!

Once I pull the console off I find almost $8 in change (we have dollar and two dollar coins here) plus some party favors :fp: I wonder how long that has been under there?!

After successfully replacing the boot and knob and putting the console back in I moved onto the steering wheel.

The new wheel is a releather from Bob Tweedy in Montana. What a great guy to deal with. I know he had talked about retiring so I am glad I got this done last year when I did.

This car had an alarm system in it when I got it. Clearly a vintage set up that included a PAGER!

I had removed the siren from under the hood when I got it just for aesthetics.

While I had the console out, I contemplated on whether it should stay or whether I should pull it out. I never did try it to see if it worked even. It probably did for all I know.

Regardless, I made the decision to pull it all out, including the wiring.
Nothing too crazy to it. It was in series with the antenna so if someone pulled the stereo out, it would trigger. There was a plunger switch for the hood and it was also connected to the interior light circuit.
The part I never noticed before was there was a magnetic switch on each door. These I ended up leaving as it so as not to disturb them but I did pull the wiring out that went to them.

While following the wires to the interior light circuit, I found a repair and bypass of a plug near the passenger foot well under the dash. Oh well.

My previous upper wing did have a bit of movement to it while driving and shook up and down over bumps and rough road.
It may have mainly due to the improper fastening but regardless, I wanted to get some supports. There are a few options including the ones available on NPD (that I believe were invented/made by a member of SVOCA?). That and some other plastic ones.

Mike Martinelli (n20capri on FourEyedPride) has some good info on his website always (http://www.mikemartinelli.com/) but there was something new. A link to his personal design for supports made through a third party 3D printing place; Shapeways.

The intention from Mike was to use two sided tape to fix them to the glass and wing but I didn't have any of the right kind around. I opted to use some industrial velcro I had laying around. I had used this MANY years ago to fix the louvers on my '82 to the glass and NEVER had any issues.

Here is the finished product. These really firm things up and seem very secure. For the limited driving the car gets, these are perfect for what I need!

One of the last areas this year was to get at a few outstanding things in the engine bay.

After I had gotten the car three years ago I had isolated a rattle to the pins on the intercooler brackets.

The plan was to remove the intercooler brackets and use new, heavier hoses that support it. I had trouble finding the recommended Napa hoses here for a good price (the local Napa only sold it in 3' lengths). Another member in the US picked some up and sent me the right lengths...THREE YEARS AGO! (Thanks MAPSVO!)

Two years ago, I changed the distributor cap and rotor (which made a difference in the way the engine ran) but I never did the plugs and wires (which have sat in a box since then) due to the intercooler in the way.

That brings us to now. The intercooler actually comes off pretty darned easy. The finish is still in very good shape for this one!

The car still retained what looked like the original hoses!

Here are the brackets off. Hard to tell visually whether the male end on these brackets are worn or the bushing on the engine bracket but either way there was definitely play in them to cause an irritating vibration/rattle!

After that was off it was time for the plugs. This is when I noticed something slightly amiss. "One of these things is not like the others"!

The number three spark plug is different than the other three! Whomever changed them last time couldn't get at it and left it! Maybe it was the original plug that's been in there 90,000 miles??

I went with these NGK Iridium plugs based on other's recommendations. I sure everyone has an opinion but I got these based on forum info on the internet and what is available locally. I'm sure they cant be bad. I gapped at 0.035" and ran these wires I'd been holding onto for a few years also!

I had a replacement hood to intercooler seal bought three years ago also that I finally got changed out!

The passenger side engine splash sheild was also missing. I thought that all of these were the same but it looks like the four cylinder cars and their long bracketed sway bars are different :hsrun:
I had some spares around and cleaned up the bottom one in this picture before relaizing when I attempted to install it that it wont work.
The driver's side I have is like this upper one. Luckily I had one of that kind, cleaned it up and put it on :)

Also a couple of years ago, I had hoarded a very good set of used headlights. Another member on FEP needed some lights so I decided to bite the bullet and switch the ones on the car out and ship them out.
It was another thing (like removing the intercooler) that was easier than I thought it would be.
Everything for the swap went off without a hitch. I went out at night to do the final adjustments which seemed okay but when I got into the garage I noticed the driver side light seemed loose at the bottom when I grabbed it to give it a wiggle. I thought somehow the retainer clip had came loose from there.
A little investigating showed me a home repair that no longer works! I never noticed it earlier as the light frame sat in front of it and it did not seem loose. See the wraps of wire that are around the light bulb frame stud?

I couldn't beleive my eyes when I got it pulled apart! Pretty good damage to the header panel with material missing and one light frame mount broken!
The boss that's broken to hook to the rad support wasn't broken. It broke when I was trying to get the material to line back up around the hole :mad:

Needless to say, I am inexperienced with fibreglass, didn't have any here and I am unsure if it would have worked in this case or not. I went to my Red Green special fixer: JB weld.
With the size of the void and the detached pieces, this had to be done in stages. The broken mount boss to the header and a new piece of sheet metal bent to fit where the light frame on the right attaches.

On the left there was cracked material also so I went over it also to add some strength. The mount to the rad support was done up loosely but enough to hold it secure while it set.

So far so good. Step two was to add some more reinforcement pieces and add material to the previously done spots it possible. Note the stress that was on this whole area did not allow me to line the overlap up in the center of the light hole. It had to stay where it was otherwise, I would be frustrated trying to get it lined up when it wouldn't without a fight!

I know it's not the prettiest and best fix but with the adhesive cured, everything feeling quite secure and stable. I then put everything back together. No wonder I never really noticed when I had the light out before.

When I got the car, it had looked like it had bumped into something. From the exterior, it really didn't look too bad other than the cracked paint (the picture doesn't show the cracking well) and the starting to chip white paint. Clearly that was a poor estimation as it must have taken a good bump to crack and damage the paint that much. Looking up from underneath at the bumper mount, it doesn't look bent but judging but by the paint marks on it, it does looks to have been pushed in 2-3 inches on impact and then back out :fp:
When I get my parts car stripped down, I hope to find a good header panel that now will one day get transplanted into this car but this inconspicuous repair should be good for a little bit in the least. I know they can be hard and not cheap to find!

While under the hood, I did some dusting, cleaning and detailing. Well as best as you can with most everything in the car :)
I really only pulled out the fan, overflow bottle and battery tray. I re-loomed a few wires and rerouted a couple of wires and hoses near the wiper motor. Is has some minor damage around the tray from what looks like battery acid damage.

I also pulled off the rad brackets and air filter cover to repaint. Boy did the brackets need it! I had to wait to put it all back together until I got the header "fix" done.
Not sure how much time I will have for more work before the big Labour Day show myself and my son's Tangerine coupe are in but a quick interior vacuum and detail again would be first. I'm glad I managed to get all of this done so quick! Who says hoarding parts is a bad thing :D

Thanks Mike. I like to document things for my own knowledge mainly because I'm kind of still learning about cars in general after many years of hiatus.

I'd have to check my photo dates but I think all of the work took me about three to four weeks in July. I had all of the parts all stashed together and pretty much ready for this burst other than the paint. My recent first major project experience gave me the ability to go much quicker than the first time I did many tasks; trim removal, prep, mask, painting and more.

The covers was an assumption I had made when I had first gotten the car. I'm new to svo's three summers ago and never knew. I thought all would've had the white and guessed mine had eroded off.

Bluemax corrected me after I did it on FEP and I never forgot :) I did take the time in between times last month to remove the paint. Better eh?

The one and only show appearance this year. The local Alberta Mustang Auto Club (AMAC) hosted the 37th International Mustang Meet this past weekend with the show on Saturday.

It was myself and this 85.5 in the 84-86 (all) category. In the end he took the award (participant voting).

I am getting better knowing what I am looking at and know my car was stock where his had some modifications. He had a fresher, more obvious shine to the paint and had repolished wheels that set it off. Ah well. Next year, the IMM #38 is held in Helena, Montana.

Yesterday, I went on one of four cruise/sight seeing tours that were held. This one had 48 cars in it and we did around a 60-70 mile circuit into the foothills of the Rockies. The weather wasn't the greatest but it was fun.

Guys, I haven't updated in a bit and don't visit as much as I used to but the car is still here and I am always picking away!

This happened prior to the show above and ended 2016. Originally posted on FEP!

After this work in the engine bay was done I had a small cold start up issue. I had needed to adjust the throttle plate set screw in order to have the car run. It also was not doing a "high idle" at cold start.
The car did not have any operational issue after starting and warming up.
After digging into it (slowly while enjoying the car after my work on it :D ) it turns out that the plug was undone to the idle air control solenoid (IAC) and I really do not remember undoing it.
I plug it in and voila, instant change on start-up. The only problem was by me adjusting the throttle plate earlier, I needed to recalibrate the throttle plate and the TPS.
The guys (Especially Mike Fleming) at SVOCOP help settle me down and get it done once I got my head around what to do. This is new territory for me again but after doing it, it all makes more sense on how it operates.

It seems that most who have splash guards on their Fox Mustangs have the same style we all know.
The ones that were on my SVO were different. Mainly the back ones but I really liked them. I also liked them because they had cool "TURBO" graphic decals on them ;)
They show their age and wear and tear though. The front ones were mainly gone and the back were mostly intact but had some cracks and lifting.

As I stated, I liked them and wanted to keep them so I searched for the brand I found molded into the back ones: "PowerFlow Model 3". I actually find one pair on eBay. Typical problem; too much money really when you count the extra to get it to Canada and they couldn't guarantee the decals were in the package either.

I see the fronts are pretty universal and are model 4 if anyone is looking for some now :)
Second choice was to get some custom decals made. I went to a local graphic artist place that do signs, posters, trade show displays etc. but they also do decals. I took the rear flap with me to them. They looked at it and said, sure we can do that. $50 minimum charge due to the printer and/or size of paper. She took the measurements she needed, they took my $50 up front and they called me in a week.

I ended up doing the front ones in place. Who ever installed them had riveted them on and I didn't need to bother disturbing them.

I had contemplated customizing the script on them to "SVO" or something but never pursued it early enough.
A couple of weeks ago, I went for a cruise around the city with about eight other cars and the four left after went to really the only place where "car people" go. It's a lot of the tuner groups, imports etc., the odd muscle car but it was packed.
I ended up leaving right away because there was nowhere to really park but about a mile away a young guy in his 90's-2000s BMW pulls up to me at a red light. He looks and asks "is that all original?". I say "pretty much" other than the exhaust. He sees the decal on the splash guard and goes "I never knew they made turbo's of those". When the light turned green, I think I surprised him enough he'll remember they made turbos of these!

For the last while since that show, I have been side-tracked with repairing some front end damage on a 79 coupe I had restored. It took me over a year and a half after the frame work was done!

2017 was a year that not much happened. Doing the work on the 79 coupe kept me from much. Good thing was, I didn't really have much to do. The car was running well. I drove it here and there. Not as much as I had hoped but always happy when it starts right up!

I replaced the cracked around the screw driver's side switch bezel. Finish on the repro isn't really the same...

The main local Mustang club I belong to and go to the odd meeting and show always do the local World of Wheels and for the last number of years win the club display. This year they were asking for large good quality images. If we paid $50 we would get a 36" x 36" laminated print.

This was the final image I submitted. It was an older picture before all of the latest trim fixes but it was still really good. It was used along with a bunch of other member cars for the display. I ended up putting it up on my basement computer room wall to see every time I walk by it :tu:

They had a Monopoly theme to the display this year. I do not know what square I was although it doesn't look like I am on the cheap side of the board :o Likely not Boardwalk or Park Place I'm sure :D I never went down in person this year nor did I help the club with the display.

With having the rework on the Tangerine coupe ongoing, these was not a lot of opportunity to do any "major" work on the SVO last year.

I finished the 79 finally last week and found the time to wake up the SVO in June from the extra long slumber this past winter! This car always starts easily for me! Check the fluids, remove the coil wire, crank to get some oil pressure and then vroom...no issues!

As usual, I have been gathering needed parts over the last couple of years to eventually get to one day.

On the list:
- Front pads and rotors. I knew these needed to be done.
- Rear pads. Turn the rotors if needed
- Oil and filter change
- Fuel filter
- Oil pressure sender. The gauge reads quite high most of the time.
- Coolant temp sensor. Coolant gauge temperature seems inaccurate to the actual temp and fan on point.
- Front hood emblem (maybe as I really would like to do rock chips or repaint the front cover and hood front first)

Early last week, I pulled the front apart to get started on the work.
It was so tempting to jump in and start cleaning and detailing every little thing but I know I cannot spend the time this go around. This is a get in and get done endeavour! Well, maybe a little cleaning...:D

Everything came apart as expected. I did notice I am missing the anti-rattle bracket for the front passenger side and have a broken back one!

I knew I was not getting the best results out of these and knew the rotors were not true. These were like this when I got it. They look to be the original front rotors. Wow are they wavy!

Well, Mr. Smarty that I am buying things months if not years in advance have an issue with the front pads I bought from RockAuto last year.

I expected that RockAuto would have been accurate and thought I had done my homework :( These Motorcraft BR7B seem to be for 83-93 Mustangs and all engines now that I dig deeper. Just not the SVO...The back were correct.

I searched again and still had a hard time getting accurate info online. I decided to search up the part number in my parts book and found the page.

In the meantime, I went as far as I could. The bearings all seemed good once cleaned up. I repacked them and put the hubs back together.

I noticed looking closer that all of the original Koni's are still on the car although the front passenger strut may have a small leak. I will have to keep an eye on it.

While I was underneath I thought I would scrape and wipe a bit. It looks like at least the oil pan drain plug was leaking for a bit and spraying back underneath.

Since I had the car, I had noted that the oil pressure gauge was not reading correctly. Not believable to be that high and nothing actually be noticeably wrong with the car ;)

It's funny. I had to look around to find the sensor on the engine. As stated, I had questioned the fan operation and temperature switch in relation to the gauge reading. A couple of summers ago, I had got into slow freeway traffic on a warm afternoon and noted the gauge creeping up and making me nervous. I had tried to check the fan operation and only knew that it at least would come on. I just wasn't happy with what the gauge said when it did.

Amazing how many different ones of these things there are to buy on the market. Different colours, temps etc. I found the right one at least.

I had noted last year after storage that I had a small coolant leak but I could not find it. While underneath and doing the cleaning I did I noted a drip on the started and found the turbo coolant return hose was the culprit!

What a tough place to reach too! Good thing I can get in there other wise the starter and maybe more would have to come off!

I drained the coolant and pulled the sensor. Filled it and fired it back up again to test.

I let it run until the fan came on. Temps were reasonable with the infrared gun and the gauge read this when it kicked in. Before I had seen it creep to the line at least. Another small task done :tu:

Speaking of rotors... I took the ones off the car in and they machined them all. The rears were well within spec.

I installed the replacement front rotors I bought thinking (knowing) they were bad but they were okay to machine per spec. So I have a spare set... should I Evapo-Rust them for future?

So I got the pads a bit ago and installed them with little fanfare.

The front; no issues other than bending the pad tangs to go into the pistons:

The rear pistons were a little tough to get turning with the cheap tool. The passenger side was a real *itch. The holes were stretched previously making the tool useless.

Bonus is the NOS pad set came with a replacement anti-rattle bracket to replace the broken one I had.

I ended up using my 14" offset pipe wrench to catch the outer edge and turn the piston in. No damage to the boot but what a pain. It would not retract any more and was still seemingly real tight putting it back onto the rotor.

During the installation of the pads, I decided to change the fluid out. Gravity drained most of it and used the vacuum pump after. Lastly used another person to press the pedal to ensure all of the air was out.

Back passenger had a little amount of solids come out initially but nothing too alarming.

I have driven the car a handful of times since the pad change.

First trip out after bedding the pads and rotors, I went for around 10-15 miles around the neighbourhoods to check the feel out. I ended up with really hot rotors and wheels especially the front drivers was HOT. Wheel hot to the touch hot. Not good. I let it cool, took it apart and found nothing wrong. Tried it again and it is fine. The piston must have stuck for a bit. Whew.

The last few times out though the back passenger side rotor and wheel are warming up. Not as bad as the front was the first day but I was still concerned. I took it all apart and again, everything looks okay. Still slight warming - above normal at least when comparing to the other wheels. It just feels like there is a little more resistance and dragging than there should be. The car rolls but not as easy as one would think. The e-brake is all the way backed off too.

Not sure if there is anything I can really do. Do you think they will wear in and this is just a break in period? I will take it apart one more time in order to clean and grease to ensure the pads are moving freely and not jamming and maintaining contact with the rotor.

If it was all easy, this would be no fun right?

Well, the coolant leak is fixed as well as the oil pan plug is good. With it being cleaner plus in my garage to look for any leaks sooner after running it, I have found the last culprit.

Looks like it may be the rear seal. Not a deal breaker right now and not something I am inclined to fix in the short term. The car runs strong and I can live with this for now :tu:

The valve cover breather, the oil feed line for the turbo fitting elbow into the center housing was just enough to drip slightly down the return line then drip to the oil pan rail. The heat from the turbo burned the oil off the center housing so you did notice it. It didn't leak at idle because the pressure was low at idle. Driving with the oil pressure higher is when it would weep. I now use liquid teflon sealer on elbow fittings. Stopped the leaks.

Looking at the two closeups I have of the front Koni's is they both are stamped 10-2-87. Door tag has a 01-86 date on it. Clearly they must have been replaced at some time not long after new.

Thanks for that. It may be further up like you say. I have not been in behind the valve cover and head to see back there up close but it could be. One day this will be rebuilt so I can live with a little leak for now.

Just read the complete project thread. Thanks for the attention to detail and illustrating the work you did so clearly. Your SVO is especially nice. The amount of documentation you have truly is remarkable. The previous owner really did care for this car. I had a black '84 purchased from original owner who promised to include documentation that I never received, I am still bitter about that. BTW, the '79 coupe is also a really nice car.

After doing the brakes, I find they work great! I still feel more resistance to rolling than I think there should be plus I have an intermittent clicking and squeaking from the front passenger wheel. With other things going on I haven't had the time to look into it too deeply again. It will remain on the to-do list.


With the brake noise noted above and Tangerine coupe on the road too, driving seemed limited.

Little to report on the SVO this year. There isn't much for me to do really. The things I want to do are a little more of a time commitment than I was willing to put in this year - valve seals, heater core and some rock chip repair.


I had the car out at least a handful of times. I was away all of July with work so that may have put a damper on that.


Regardless, the car still runs well with close to 155,000 km on it. I try not to push on it too hard (haha) thinking it's one hard pull from breaking something but this car always impresses me and doesn't let me down.

One day after an evening cruise with the windows down, I got back to park and my passenger window would not go up :( Never had any real issues with the windows before although they were a little slowish. Thanks to Western Motorsports here for having a pair of repro motors and for having them cheaper than buying online and shipping from the US! :tu:


The day I brought the car home to my garage to swap the motors out, the darned thing worked again! I still swapped them and kept the old ones for "spares".

The drives I take make the car thirsty and she earns her keep. Just under 20 miles to the gallon. If I drove with a lighter foot or out of premium mode you'd easily get low to mid 20's I'd say.

We had rain in the city the day before this in mid-October but went for a drive to the west. The roads were fairly dry but I went as far west as I dared and started to hit some shady frozen sections and where there was much more snow.

Last major trip out went a little further out but did SE of the city this time on a nice fall mid-October cruise. Did 150 km trip and pushed the car. I love the feel of the turbo kicking in to pass a snail on the highway.
