View Full Version : Car could run better, pesky Injectors!

Well the car runs pretty good but I would bet the injectors that sat with gas in them since 1992 and I had to soaked overnight in alcohol just to get the pintals unstuck could be improve upon.
Actually now that I think about it the problem is more than likely I need to have the injectors professionally cleaned or buy a new set.
I had originally during the build picked up a set from Orielys and they did not seat into the intake manifold properly.
They said that they were for the 85/86 cars and they were not a pintal type injector so I took them back.
I need the correct injector part number for my car, I guess the engine in my 85 is actually a 84. I keep seeing how you can upgrade but the to the 35lbers but the ones from orielys would not seat well enough in my intake for me to take the chance of spaying gas all over under the hood of my newly assembled SVO.

All in-line intake engines originally came with the green top (aka 31 Lbs/hr) injectors while all of the square intake engines came with the brown tops (aka 35 Lb/hr). Everything just happened to be pintle type in that era. The physical dimensions of the green and brown versions are identical, same length, same seals. Since then the Deka style of non-pintle, stream (versus cone) spray have become quite popular in new engines. As long as the flow rate is the same, it shouldn't matter.

The RC 550cc (52 Lb/hr) injectors I have int he Red Baron engine are the center-spray DEKA style.

The "Cone" patter is intended to spray out microscopic droplets for better vaporization. Unfortunately it tends to merge back to larger droplets when it contacts smooth surfaces, such as polished intake ports. The DEKA stream design it intended to use a narrow, high-velocity spray to hit something (such as the valve stem) and use that impact to break up the stream into tiny droplets to be sucked in by the engine. DEKA design is much more common in "synchronous" injection and not so much in SDF systems.

ALWAYS check to see that the replacement injectors are low impedance (2.2-2.4 Ohms). if any are outside that range, do not use them. With one exception: The BOSCH 803 (aka 42 Lb/hr, dark green) are 4.4 Ohms. Note the larger injectors will need some form of EEC or EEC program change to work correctly (compensate for different injector flow volumes).

It was the way the Deka style did not seat into the intake ports.
The old units popped in and were more or less held in place will the Deka units that Orielys had did not seat and seal at all and that made me apprehensive enough for me to not install them.
Perhaps after the fuel rail was install they would have worked out fine.
I just didn't want to burn the car down.

I just didn't want to burn the car down. IIRC houses and buildings burn down (as in "to the ground"). Cars burn up.

Mike, I would have to challenge your notion of how a car burns. I have seen plenty that have virtually melted 'down' into the asphalt and have not seen one up in a tree after burning...usually they can burn nicely once up in a tree, but that is another story...

The injectors at O'reilly's seem to be the correct 'style' units. They offer both new (57027) and remaned (27027) BWD units on their online catalog. The 57027 units appear to be the pintle style, while the reman units look like DEKA style from all the pics I can find on both O'reilly's and BWD's websites, which is interesting. I wonder why the DEKA style didn't seem to seat correctly?? You could just request the 57027P units from O'reilly's to see if they are indeed the pintle style.

Mike, I would have to challenge your notion of how a car burns. OK, fair enough.

My thinking was "burned up a tank of gas" and "burned up the brakes" at my last track day.

Although I will propose chevys can burn up, down & out.

actually up or down burned is indeed burned.
Actually the ones they had sold me were the 57027P units and the were the Deka type.
They Sat in the hole in the manifold and did not Pop in as the pintal units did.
Ive been driving the car around and its really a great little car.
Wish we had some nice curvy roads like the Dragon perhaps.
