View Full Version : Occasional poor idle at stops and intermittent stalling.

Out driving the car this past weekend and it seemed the car was running pretty good, at least until I came to a stop.
That's when she would lose idle down to a stall.
When I got home I thought I would adjust the idle and reset the TPS and found there was no adjustment.
The TPS was showing 1.5vdc at closed throttle no matter what I did to try and adjust it. It would increment up and right about in the middle a dead spot. I have the TPS on order from NPD out here in Michigan and they said it would be here by Tuesday. I will clean the AIC at the same time I do the install for the TPS and see if that takes care of the Stalling.
Amazing all the little gremlins this car is displaying.
It sat so long I guess that is to be expected.

On installation make sure the two tabs on the TPS properly engage the flats on the end of the throttle shaft. The voltage staying at 1.5V might indicate the TPS rotor is not moving [with the throttle], the wrong two wires were selected, or you may need to call a priest.
Fortunately TPSs are cheap and easy to replace.

It moves with the throttle, just has a 20 degree dead spot and at closed position it is at 1.5vdc!
Those screws are a pain to get at, I will remove the throttle body when I replace it.
I used the green voltage wire and grounded from the battery.

Those screws are a pain to get at, I will remove the throttle body when I replace it. I use a 3" #1 Phillips and can reach those easily in-situ.
I used the green voltage wire and grounded from the battery. NEVER check any EEC sensor voltage from the battery. ALWAYS check them in reference to the EEC ground - preferably at each sensor or (more better, but more difficult) directly at the 60-pin EEC connector.
There's a good reason why every EEC sensor has it's own power and ground wires.

Point Taken!
That does make sense.

I removed the throttle body and did the maintenance to it, it was actually pretty clean.
Removed the AIC and checked it out and reinstalled the TPS and mounted it back on the car. While I was at it I cut back all the vac lines and reinstalled them. ( Not the ones for the boost control!)
I set it to .95vdc with the engine running and then shut her down plugged in the IAC and started her up , reset the Idle to 800rpm and she's never ran better.

... reset the Idle to 800rpm and she's never ran better. Not to worry! We can fix that!

I took the car out last night and ran her out to flint " about 30 miles from my house!" on hwy 69.
Ran her up over 100MPH for a few pulls and ran at 75MPH most of the way there and back, at least until I got the tank at a really low level
Dont want to run lean!!.
Car runs excellent, no more idle issues and not even a hiccup at stops.
Great gas mileage, Im trying to empty the tank so I can install the Breather Gromet and a new filler neck bushing tomorrow.
I put a gas can in the back of the car with 2 gallons in it and the car is on Empty now.

Finally filled the car up and she leaks like a siv! I drained the tank down and I'm pretty sure it's the tank sending unit gasket.
To bad the car is in storage for the winter now.

Check again where it's leaking from.
Those "gaskets" are on the top and normally don't see fuel unless there's lots of bouncing - the full level is below that sealing flange for both the sender and pump. And the vent thingie is on top also.
What is this thing you call "winter"? Around here this is the time of year when we take our wheeled toys OUT of storage.

If I had to bet it would be the filler neck gasket.

If I had to bet it would be the filler neck gasket. My bet also.
But then it would only be leaking on the right side of the tank.

I can not disagree but the last that got me leaked and ran down along the flange then down into the plastic tank cover and then came out the holes there. But I knew I had tore the gasket putting the tank up.

I can assure you it is not the filler neck grommet.
I replaced it but it never has leaked at that point.
Im pretty sure its the sending unit gasket.
As soon as the car was full it poured out from the top of the tank
I understand what you mean about those areas normally not seeing a lot of fuel unless its sloshing around but that area of the tank sets lower than the fuel pump hole.
That is why I think that's the problem.
And the winter thing is something im glad you do not have to endure.
It Sux!
