View Full Version : Startup question - priming the oiling system

Hi,

How long before first attempt at starting can I prime the oil system on a new engine? As I add the 3G alternator, plug wires etc. I'm thinking I need to take it all off again to remove the distributor to prime it. But I'm not ready yet to fire it (4-6 weeks maybe? Next two days are my only 'work on the car' days until mid May).

So how far ahead can I confirm I have oil pressure etc.? Or just suck it up and take it apart when I finally have all the parts and time?

Thanks,

Chris

I would prime now and later. Just to make sure there are no leaks now and then later to prime the system for maximum benefit for startup. You won't need to remove the alternator for pulling the distributor. Remove the cap and rotor to give you more operating room though, makes it easier.
