Spare parts off a parts car; what should I try to get?

I have an opportunity to stop in and see an '84 SVO owner an hour and a half away who has purchased a front end damaged '85 parts car. I was really wanting a spare set of spats before my '86 ones will supposedly disintegrate but he is keeping that. It sounds like the engine is pretty much intact on this 63K mile car.

My question was; if I could grab some "spare parts", what would I grab fairly quick and easy? Things that are hard to find, not available in OEM etc. Not being as knowledgeable as the group here but I had heard about some of the water tubes and turbo oil lines possibly but what else? It sounds like it has original hoses on it also.

Any hints? I am hoping to make the drive next weekend. Ps: I have an '86.

Good question!

I won't get into the "discussion" on parting out an SVO here, so... that being said, I am always looking for those parts that are SVO specific (or harder to find oem) Most of my list is small detail stuff for proper restorations;

rear brake parts; caliper mounting brackets both axle and caliper sides, the parking brake cable brackets and arms, brake hose brackets (typically the hoses are shot, but the correct brackets can be replated and reinstalled on new hoses)
hardware; spats, front bumper cover, rear interior screws, rear wing mounting screws, nuts, and acorn nuts, engine coolant hose clamps, turbo related, rear suspension, rear shock hardware (upper washers!)
trans cross member
horns and mounting screws
front inner fender liners and screws
underhood courtesy light
konis (date coded)
heater box (if non-AC car)

If the car is in really good condition, then I start looking at other "mint" parts like wiring, hoses, misc. engine brackets, fan, etc., etc.

Probably not what you were thinking when you asked the question... but you will be surprised what you find missing, incorrect, or rusted, when you start trying to properly restore one of these cars.

Thanks for the reply and you are right, not really what I expected.

I completely understand about the parting of cars. From my brief Facebook conversations with the guy and the one picture of the car I have seen is the front end is quite damaged and the unibody is bent but the engine compartment is mostly intact as is interior and rear half (if the frame damage never bent the body panels up).

Some of those you listed may take more time to get than I might have but great list!

Well, I assumed it was a given on the SVO leather items (if in good condition), door panels, dash panels (if in good condition), sail panels, seats, or the bi-wing.

Looking at the pic, (rust free) doors, (rust free) hatch, rear interior quarter trim panels (if in good condition), and rear bumper cover.

The wheels are not worth much unless you need them... plenty of supply out there.

This car looks like one that was for sale in Edmonton about 6 years ago. A quick look at the pic says an 85.5 and quite possibly an export svo IIRC. Maybe I could meet up with you next weekend to look it over.

Thinking to go up to Red Deer on Sunday. If I go, I have to go early to meet up with an FEP buddy to swap some rims we bought for each other off Kijiji. We usually have breaky first and then head home but I am still hoping to meet this guy about the SVO.
