Looking for recommendations on a new turbo and manifold. Car has a mildly ported head with a RR cam, 3 inch down pipe, FMIC and a PIMP. Will upgrade injectors and fuel pump at some point. Would like to be around 250-300 whp with all mods installed. I do want to maintain the stock turbo location, so keep that in mind.

Not many options for stock location. Find a used Rod's header or Bob's log maybe. I would go for a bigger cam before a header and turbo. What year is your car?

I'm pretty sure this turbo is a choking point and won't perform well above stock levels. Not to mention that I think the housing is cracked and losing coolant. I just figured I'd go ahead and get a better manifold if I'm replacing the turbo anyway. I see Gnari has a kit with a higher flowing e6 type manifold and BB turbo. I'm just a little hesitant to order from them after the nightmare I had getting their intercooler fitted. I had this cam installed a few weeks ago and don't really want to go through it again right now.

I have no experience with the Gnari stuff but it looks good on the internet. Go to Turbo Ford and search Gnari in general techboard. Plenty of threads.

Considering the E6 doesn't leak, I might just try to do a new turbo. Any suggestions on an upgraded unit with stock wastegate?

With a RR cam why don't you just rebuild yours. If you feel the need you can go T3/4 hybrid with a BB center section. But without turning the boost up and running high octane fuel you wont gain enough to make it worth the cost.

Oh, we will be turning up the boost. That's why I have the front mount intercooler, PIMP, downpipe, etc. But from the way this turbo whistles, I'm pretty sure the wheel has been clipped, making it less than ideal. Plus, I think the housing leaks.

I have been running precision turbos on all of my turbofords for the last 12 yrs and have been very happy with them. The entry level turbo cost is about $800 then the next step up is $1100 with more turbo option on inlet and exhaust housings. The entry level turbo for size start at a 54mm and go up to a 60mm I believe. The next step up starts at a 55mm and fours to a 62mm for sure. As for headers randy heinlin on turboford builds some awesome headers for a good price and they don’t crack. I have been using his center mount for about 2 yrs without issue. 9695

This is his stock location header.9696

That's a good looking header all right. What kind of a flange is on it? What are you doing with the waste gate piping?

It’s on the back of the manifold. Here is a pic of the setup.

As for the center mounts wastegate dump tube it’s to atmosphere.

You should look into either using the stock cam or a better cam than that RR cam.

A boport 1.5 is a great cam even with stock valves it will help a bunch.

I like my 2.1 but that involves head work. What does the 1.5 behave like compared to stock?

I like the Engle 55H dual springs pulls great 3000- 6000k

Is the rr cam not an upgrade over stock? I like the idle and it pulls pretty well from down low. I can tell it's out of steam over 5500 rpms, but we rarely wind it out past 6k anyway.

I might consider one of Bo's cams later down the road. For NOW I need to decide on a turbo. Bo sells a t3/4 Garrett for $745. What a/r should I get if I go that route? I see that it is only oil-cooled. Would I just delete the water lines?

A .63 is good if you have a ported head but a .48 will spool up faster. As for the water lines just delet them.

Personally I would stay with a water cooled turbo if you have one now. On the street, autocross or open track water cooled is the way to go IMHO.
The RR cam runs out of poop too early.
If you want to turn up the boost you need time to build it.
Or a tiny Ball bearing turbo.

OK.... let's pretend I have a Bo 1.5, because I will probably end up getting one soon. (He does have a roller version, right?) Point me to a link for a good turbo for that combination plus my set-up. I'd like to stay water cooled and would kind of like a ball bearing unit. Thanks.

All of boports cams are rollers.

Cool. I just ordered the 1.5 and springs.

To bad its so damn expensive and time consuming but an A/B dyno test between the two cams would be interesting.

Between which two cams?

Has anybody used one of these?

Is that just a crack-fest waiting to happen?

Between which two cams? Between the ranger roller you have now and the bo1.5. Basically do all your other changes such as the cam and exhaust manifold. Then dyno that set up with the ranger cam, then swap cams and repeat. Change nothing else not even the boost for the 1st few pulls to get an accurate comparison. After tweek your boost and anything else you'd like. But again I realise this takes time and money. If I could work out a deal with boport I'd dyno my car with the stock 86 cam, then the boport 1.1, finishing with the 1.5.

Its a copy of the old Rod's header so the design is good but odds are is thin cheap metal. That said if you were to buy one and it fit well send it off to someone like beanman or boport and see if they will copy it out of quality metal.

Ah, got it. Yea, I'm not doing all of that on my own dime. Boport says 40hp over stock with the 1.5. I'll take his word for it. I didn't notice that link was to XS Power. I remember now that their headers are junk. I'll find something else.

40 HP over a A-231 Ford (Crane) that's a lot from just a cam. What are the specs on the 1.5?

SchoolBoy

All he lists on his site is that its 436" advertised lift.

Bo does not list the spec's. Says he has too much development cost into them.
