So how difficult of a job is it to replace the water pump? I swear this car is cursed.

If you’ve done a timing belt then it shouldn’t take more than a few more minutes to pull the pump.

So, I have to do the timing belt again to replace the pump?

No, it;s an easy job. remove the belts, then the water pump pulley and then 3 bolts. The biggest trouble will be finding a water pump with the correct diameter pilot shaft.

What is the correct diameter and part #?

The stock unit on my 86 was 3/4" with the v-groove pulley. The serpentine setup that I have from a 91 mustang is 5/8".

Any preference on brand? RockAuto has several, including Motorcraft. I don't really car about the price as the most expensive one is under $50.

All of the ones on rock auto including the Motorcraft unit has the 5/8"diameter pilot. I tried the Motorcraft one there and it came in the wrong size. I don't think you are going to find one with the correct pilot shaft. I tried autozone, Napa, O'rielly's and Advance and no one had the correct unit. You should double check the size of your unit before proceeding.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but does the pulley just not go back onto the smaller pilot shaft for some reason?

I just measured the one on the car and it is 5/8. So back to question on RockAuto. Is there any advantage to the Motorcraft over any of the others?

Yes! If it's still available, BUY THE MOTORCRAFT!
Far better quality than the Chinese knock-off rebuilds. And Motorcraft parts have 2yr/unlimited mileage warranty.

Well.... I ended up getting the Gates with the lifetime warranty. We'll see how it goes.

I still have my original to have it rebuilt in case my other '86 with the stock setup needs one. Is there one you recommend over others?

Well, that wasn't too bad. Pretty straight-forward job. I did manage to get the pulley back on before I noticed that I had not reinstalled the timing cover, so that added some time :( I don't know if it's related, but on burping the system, I notice that it doesn't get as hot on the gauge when the fan comes on. It will get to almost A on normal and then when the fan kicks on, it cools off much more quickly. Increased coolant flow?

Was starting to wonder if there were shops that could rebuild water pumps. Used a local radiator and alternator/starter rebuild shop, but never water pump. You always know the part will fit if original parts can be rebuilt.

Another guy who does the older water pumps is deadnutson. He is well known for his NOS looking quality. There is not much to rebuilding water pumps and the parts seem to be readily available. The cleaning and prep work would be the most work for these guys.
