Here's the beauty shot, I'll try to reconstruct the pictorial history overy the next few days. Its about impossible to reconstruct the trials, tribulations and angst from the original thread. Trust me to say that pioneering a bunch of solutions, hiring crappy consultants, half-assed shop experiences and blowing up damn near everything just can't be recreated. But, we're on the crux of getting this thing back on the track, so hang on for another e-ticket ride.

We bought a "ready to race" (LOL) '89 coupe, sans engine, from Portland Oregon. My brother and I raced up there in Big Red (the '88 crewcab diesel dually) and round tripped it in about 28 hours. Nothing like going over the Siskyous at about 30 miles an hour. Car broke loose in the trailer in Grants Pass after negotiating a particularly brutal driveway exit at the local Wendy's. Luckily we caught the issue pretty quickly.

When we got it home we found that the cage just wasn't up to the task, and mission creep quickly took hold. Suffice it to say that the only things used from the original car are: The roof, floorpan and firewall, the 8.8 rearend, and parts of the brake system.

Those CCWs are sure pretty on a Mustang. I am curious to know what you ended up doing for tune/standalone system. I know you had issues for a while and curious how you sorted out as I would prefer to learn from others trials than have same issues. Also will be curious to know if you can build a reliable 2.3/2.5 that put's up with rigors of track duty with heat soak and whatnot. Form the stories I have heard makes me consider a lsx powerplant considering I have not heard of anyone who has been able to build a reliable ~400hp 2.3 for track duty i.e. 30 minute sessions on track.

Used a Haltech, which is very poorly supported. We finally got it to run correctly when we rewired it ourselves and Scott Clark (Dieselgeek) came out and tuned it for me.

As to whether or not someone can build an engine that will live at 400hp, your guess is as good as mine. I'm limited to 300rwhp. We're going to give it at least one more try.

Here are my suggestions that I am more than willing to step up to. Call it, "Pay it forward...or would that be backward?"

Prior to the 2013 Knotts show we do a pilgrimage to Bob's place (or where ever the car is) for a couple of days and get that thing ready. I can kill two birds with one stone with this trip. We can get that blue turd ready for the track and show and I'll bring Diana, you can put her to work at the horse stables and get any notion of her wanting a horse out of her system!

Or, a couple of days prior to Knotts, you come down, we setup shop at my place and we get that thing ready for the track and the show. I'm sure we can get plenty of help.

OK add another goal for the BB next racing season...NASA Nationals. They are bringing it back to Miller Motorsports Park, which is east of the Rockies. As much as I'd like to go to Mid-Ohio, that's too long of a pull for this guy.

So...MMP will be the venue for 2013 and 2014. We have to get it there and give it a whirl. I may not drive, but the car needs to make it.

Then I'll sell the damn thing and get on with my Bonneville itch!!

The Love/Hate/Loathe relationship with this car drives me nuts.

The two big tasks are rebuilding the transmission and tearing the engine down, cleaning out all the fragg'd aux shaft and cam synch gear guts out of it, and put it back together.

The fuel cell needs to be checked, fuel system flushed, etc.

I really need to tear the whole car down, check everything, put it back together and retorque everything.

First NASA NorCal event is early February. Geoff still has this weekend and the second weekend of November on track and then he's going to crew on a 25 hour team. He won't be worth a crap until late December after that. LOL

They certainly will be higher than your blue car will be capable of.

Looks like we'll get going on teardown this weekend. Mike Shriver is coming over Friday, we'll tear things down, clean everything thoroughly and decide how to enhance the dizzy gear reliability. I've got a new aux shaft at hand, and just picked up a new cam synchronizer. I'm trying to decide whether or not to WPC treat them (http://www.wpctreatment.com/) shot peen them, cryo them, etc. WPC is at PRI, so I'll talk to them there. We'll run an M127 oil pump; if I recall, the proshop that did the assembly on the engine spec'd the HV, which I think we all agree puts a strain on the gears.

Bob,

Just get rid of the HV oil pump. I have seen these destroy more distributor gears than I can count. If the engine is built properly (correct bearing clearances), it doesn't need a HV pump.

On the 2.3l is it possible to drill a hole in the oil passage to get oil squirting directly on the gear interface?

Bob Holmes
12-07-2012, 11:21 PM
JACK! Welcome aboard.

I was surprised to find the HV in there when we yanked the engine. I thought we had instructed the shop to NOT use the HV. Something was lost in translation.

I ended up with a bout of pneumonia, so Mike and I will be pulling the engine apart this weekend. (yep, I'll take pics) I'd like to be at the 25 hours of THill this weekend, there are a couple of teams with streaming video, you guys should look it up.

Jack Hidley

Bob,

If the distributor gear is pinned to the shaft at the wrong height, it will wipe the gear out on the leading or trailing gear surface. With the distributor out of the engine, there should be some shaft endplay, say 0.010". When the distributor is installed in the block, you should be able to rotate the distributor shaft clockwise and counter clockwise some amount. The total of these angles, forward and backwards, should correspond to the total amount of shaft endplay out of the block. If the distributor gear is at the wrong height on the shaft, when installed there can be zero endplay. This results in a constant thrust load at the gear interface, which wears it out.

Comp Cams does make a composite distributor gear. I've talked to people who said it more than doubled the gear life.

The distributor gear installation info linked below is for small block Ford V8s, but you can probably interpolate from the provided data to see if the gear on your 2.3l distributor is set up properly.

Thanks a bunch, Jack.

It looks like the distributor gear may have been bottoming out in the aux shaft. The dizzy gears were rolled over, while the aux gears were simply worn away. They had a concave appearance. I think we had a bunch of tolerance stackups that caused the problem. The offshore cam synch had way too much play in the shaft, there is some fretting on the back of the aux shaft locating plate, which leads me to believe that the shaft was being thrust into the plate. Melling told me that the oil pump will cavitate at between 3,000rpm and 3,500rpm camshaft speed. This could also be a contributor to the problem. Its also why I will change to the re-engineered M127 pump.

Thanks for the references, I'll look into the gear and also review the Ford info.

Raven855
12-09-2012, 07:27 AM
Say it ain't so. Please. You have meticulous care in assembly, diagnosing and construction in the rest of the car. I know you studied technical papers, read tons of articles, searched and read posts in forums all over the Internet and were very active in oil systems discussion. You even got bucket posts from me and you already had the reference material from Melling and the post link from Jack. (Although the replacement gear was great info, Thanks Jack!) You are only revving to 6800, unless you are running some thick A$$ stuff for oil you probably don't have a cavitation issue. Have you opened up the pump to see? According to Melling "cavitation is a function of the inlet design of an oil pump. The vapor pressure of the oil versus the pressure drop that occurs from the oil pan pickup to the pump is what creates the conditions that lead to cavitation. If the pressure drop is greater than about 4 psi, vapor bubbles will form inside the pump. The bubbles will collapse on the high pressure output side of the pump. But when they do, the force generated by the implosion of the bubbles can erode the metal surfaces in the pump." I think the change to the 127 pump is a good idea, you can buy a 3/4" pick up tube for it. Again according to Melling, "The point at which cavitation starts to occur depends on pump speed and the size of the pickup tube, says Osterhaus. “Up until the early 1990s, GM used a 5/8˝ OD pickup tube on its V8 engines. In 1993, GM changed to a larger 3/4˝ tube that flowed better and produced less cavitation." I would be careful running .01 end clearance on the distributor. It is an aluminum housing and the expansion rates are different from a iron housing. Vizard in some of his books recommends .02 for aluminum and .01 for iron housings. Fords minimum specs calls for .02". I run .015 but take the opportunity to not only phase the rotor but replace the shaft pin which breaks. Vizard in his book say the plates were a problem on the older engine and to replace them to avoid problems. There has also been documented problems with the retaining holes in the block being shallow. When the bolts are torque down, there can still be movement in the plate. How about some info, what oil are you running, idle pressure? high pressure? Stock pickup? Anything for aeration control? Blond or brunnete, Something has got you distracted. Rant over, time for breakfast and some Christmas cookies!

MikeFleming

I suspect that if you had an oil cavitation problem, the rod bearings would be the first to go.

Ok, we are going to try and get this garbage scow to Knott's. I've cleared the DD distractions and we should begin to get this thing together this weekend. My buddy, Mike Shriver, and I are going to get the engine assembled this weekend. We've received the balanced rotating assembly, and Bo shipped us the reconditioned and assembled head.

The major issues are:

Assemble engine
Borrow transmission out of the totaled "Hoser"
Install mated engine and transmission in the BB Mustang.
Sort out the wiring.
Figure out a dash board
Install the fuel cell
Sort out the fuel system
Make sure it'll start
Make it presentable for a non-racing, show setting.

There will be pictures.

I've seen worse. Wish I was closer to help you out. Like I said on FB, just get the car running so you can drive it into the Knotts show, bring it here and we can spend a couple of all nighters getting it looking good. I've got some red paint left over to help!

Mike is of the opinion that the Cam Synchronizer's unbalanced rotor may be contributing to the issue. We discussed how to balance it, perhaps putting a small spot weld on the light side.

Chalky, I think we are going to do something different than what was pictured. The manifold is already wrapped, the heat scorching we are getting to the water and oil return lines still won't be fixed. Unfortunately, those problems can't be fixed by the thermal barrier coatings, either.

http://www.atpwrap.com/html/alloyracing.html

They built the inconel shield in the pic above:
http://www.atpwrap.com/html/turbo1_8.html
http://www.atpwrap.com/html/turbo1_16.html

They also supplied us with the material we used to make our header bags for in CART. If you had an inconel shield in place, you would likely have no more heat issues with your drain line.

Another company that makes the inconel covers: http://www.turblown.net/store/index.php?productID=126

I can also check with my buddy back in Indy for where he purchases his inconel shileding for his kit air planes. He fabs his own bags & just uses a spot welder from harbor freight to tack them together. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=Spot+Welders

Its running on its new MS3Pro. Easy startup after we figured out a problem with the injector driver. Today we fiddled with the gauge configuration. We've replaced the normal set of gauges with a tablet that links with a wifi set-up driven by the ECU.

Looks like we'll go to the dyno in late August-early September.

Yeah, Mike, that's a great question. Probably not. I'll have to talk to Scott.

MikeFleming
07-13-2014, 01:08 PM
From my experience with assorted touch-screen tablets and smart phones, they don't work well on the "Touch" idea with gloves on. The touch needs to be harder cause the glove spreads it over a wider area where it often hits too many cells to work as desired.

The higher intensity of low and mid-frequency vibrations might also be a serious problem in the race car. There's not much suspension and engine cushioning in there. If you're gonna find a good way to shock mount the display, I will get you some good damping rubber-like stuff to surround the mounts with that we use it on the telescopes - excellent damping characteristics. Tell me what thickness and I'll scrounge.

Bob Holmes
07-13-2014, 08:21 PM
I will definitely take you up on that. Let me figure out what we need.

The driver should not not need to touch the screen. There won't be any controls associated, its just a gauge setup.

Bob Holmes
08-29-2014, 09:10 PM
Should be coming off the jackstands tomorrow. Nut & bolt, flush and bleed the brakes and clutch, clean up some wiring, mount the nose, do a rough alignment. Dyno day set for the 20th of September.

I would love to drive that thing. I'm telling you, my car/driver combo handles awesome although lacking on power. So what does your car weigh? And if under 2800lbs what do you think are the major factors on your car vs. mine. I'm sure I could shave off 50 or so pounds with some of the interior bling. But other than that, not sure why my car weighs so much.

2560 with Fat Bob in the seat.

You'd probably kick our ass. Yours has seen some development time, whereas ours looks good on paper, and blows up on the track. So the biggest issue is that you have reliability and we don't.

Our suspensions are different. Our brakes are different, etc.

I do think it would be fun to go to the same event and trade cars. You'd better drive ours first, that way you'd get a taste before it broke down. LOL

Reliability aside...do you think it's mostly suspension adding weight. The Maximum Motorsports full grip pit does have a lot of parts.

Don't know how it relates to your cars but the hatchbacks were always heavier than the notch's.

Bob Holmes
09-17-2014, 08:20 PM
Vince, I doubt its the suspension pieces.

My car is a taco. Plus, brsvo is correct. I specifically chose the notch due to the lower weight. The fenders are fiberglass, the hood is carbon fiber (I can carry it one handed). Everything that could be cut out, was. The front fascia is plastic, it has very little structure other than a meaty bump bar under the fascia. Basically, other than the roof, we removed all extraneous weight. I've threatened to pull the roof skin and chop out the reinforcement, but Geoff likes the extra protection. All windows are lexan.

So its not one thing, its a few big ones and a lot of little ones.
