Comp Prep Springs

I want to replace the springs on my 85 Comp Prep and need some suggestions on springs that would be as close to OEM as possible. The Eibach Pro-Kit Springs - Coupe (79-04 V6, 4 Cyl) looks like it might do the trick. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. :cool:

I have been researching springs myself. I am pretty sure you want springs for a V8 application otherwise the car is going to sit with a rake. Remember the different front lower control arms on the SVO had deeper spring pockets and required. Longer spring. Since nobody makes an SVO specific spring using the slightl higher spring rate v8 spring compensates for the extra length needed in the SVO since it is lighter in front.

I am personally leaning toward Eibach Sportlines which are a progressive rate coil and will give a better ride than the pro-kit. Unless your car is track only.

The 2 most popular kits are the H&R sport spring kit and the FMS B kit. They make a decent autocross and every day driver spring set. The Comp front springs and actually lighter than the stock SVO spring. The rears are the same for both. I have experience with both kits and like the H&R best. Id be really interested in the spring rates for both. Are the H&R sports a progressive rate as well? As of now I am looking at the Sportlines and the FMS B. Lots of cars I see with the B springs sit overly high in the rear compared to the front for my taste.

3509.1.140 is the old number and the rate you want for an SVO ! I have a number of SVO's with different springs - from racing applications and the Eibach ARE FAR better for both ride, ride height and how they react to rough road. ONLY ONCE I drove a Motorsport V8 630lb rate car on the street (about 50 miles) and I though I was going to loose fillings in my teeth !

P.S. Back when SCCA rules required the use of a Ford part number - we used to choose the 1979 4cyl springs and convert the Koni's to oil !

Glad I can log into the site again. That said I continued with my project and decided on the Eibach kit that Summit Racing had listed for the SVO ( Eibach 3518.140 - Eibach Pro-Kit Lowering Springs). The car is sitting to low but does defiantly drive much better then it did before the springs. It used to have some problems with some strange roll in the middle of a turn. I have ordered some spring spacers from Global West Suspension to give it a raise (just over minimum wage). I like the way the rear looks now but am hopefully going to raise the front 1.125 and the rear .875” with the spacers ( Front #1924 Rear #1201). This should make the rear about .125 higher then the front if all goes well.

I am running the H&R Super Sport Springs, definately lowered the car, cannot use my floor jack unless I pull it up on blocks, Stiffer ride yes, uncomfortable, I don't think so. I chose these springs for Street/AutoX duty, they have performed really well. Alot better then my stock "trimmed" springs. I hear alot of fellas liking the H&R Sport springs, I have seen Chalky's car and they looked really nice, and he put some miles on that car, so the comfort level has to be pretty good.

I haven't taken in pics of my car since the install, I just put it on the to do list.

Stang, the H&R's were recommended to me as a nice, not to harsh, street/track spring. I've ridden in a few cars with the Eibach's and found them to be a little harsh for my taste. The height can be adjusted by the type of spring isolators you use. None will give the lowest stance, rubber will compress and sit a little lower and poly isolators won't compress so it will sit a little higher.

As noted, i've got over 50K on mine and love them!!!!

I've been thru Eibachs a couple of times... in my experience they inevitably sag. I recommend avoiding them at all costs. Go with the H&Rs, or Steedas (my favorite there has a 750# front rate and they can match the rear with the right rate too). Pay careful attention to the rate - for all-out handling, get a straight rate. The variable rate springs are popular for ride but leave you with slower turn-in. Subframes are essential - the longer the better (recommend Kenny Brown). And don't forget a panhard rod for the rear axle... the stock axle is extremely poorly located. Combine that with better lower arms but leave the upper arms alone or use the police-spec arms. Do not replace the upper arms with solid arms or arms with poly bushings - by design there has to be twist and compliance there. Doing so will leave you with essentially a straight-line only car. The panhard is the "miracle" addition - it takes some work but is work every cent.

I put the H&R Sports on my car and it improved the way it works greatly. I also like that it took the rake out of the stance. I would recomend adding bottom out bump stops to the Konis though.

Hope mine turns out with that exact stance. Your car is one I found a photo of which lead me to going with the H&Rs.

What bump stops did you use?

Very happy with the ride height and the ride quality of the car. Just took it on a short drive around town. Ride quality seems very close to stock maybe just a tad firmer.

Yep, the MM panhard in conjunction with the adjustable height lower control arms. Dad and I installed it in a couple of hours. We just bolted the frame in, I thought welding was a bit to permanent. Lemme know if you wanna drive it to feel the difference.

i just put the h&r race springs in mine with tokico illumina's however i think the front may need a little spacer we'll see after i get it alighned as the fronts pretty cambered in currently. might not have helped that i did the poly a arm bushings up front.

I used Energy Suspension poly isolators. Fronts are 4-6102G Rears 4-6101G

Does anyone have Fender Lip @ the role to ground measurement for the H&R Springs? I have the Eibach Pro-Kit with 5/8 Spacer in the front. The Measurements are 25” Front and 25.875 Rear. I was hoping to get the front with the H&R springs about 26” to get the suspension geometry back to normal. Any info will be appreciated.

That measurement is going to vary depending on wheel, tire, tire pressure etc. What will stay the same is fender lip to center of wheel. My car is 13 1/2 front and 13 5/8 rear to centers. With stock wheels and stock sized Kumho tires I am sitting at 25 1/4 front 25 3/4 rear but my tire pressure may be low because I haven't checked them in a couple of months.
